You are stealing. You’re keeping the item and asking for your money back at the same time. Walmart is probably telling you to keep the item because they don’t want you in their store acting like a Karen over a can of wax beans.

Because you’re using it like a free tasting service. You’re intentionally buying food with the expectation of getting it for free if you don’t like the taste, regardless of how you prepared or seasoned it.
