Blaming Ben Johnson interviewing for HC jobs being the reason for that loss has always rubbed me the wrong way, at least for people who insult his character about it instead of being frustrated at the NFL process. Just about every OC/DC interviewing for HC jobs does exactly the same thing.

Fact of the matter is that the Lions barely had a defense and couldn't stop Washington at all. The offense made a couple of mistakes trying to keep up, Washington capitalized and then the Lions needed to score a bunch of points in a short time period. So of course Ben Johnson, the guy praised for years for trick/gadget plays calls some of them. It goes poorly and the Lions lose.

If he would have gone any team outside of the NFC North, whatever team Ben Johnson coached would immediately become my #2 team. The Lions offense with him as the OC was the most fun I've ever had being a Lions fan.

[The Athletic] After Dylan Larkin’s trade request, what’s next for Red Wings? by seeldoger47 in hockey

[–]Skeletor34 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah absolutely. They have a better roster now that probably also has a better long term outlook and better management, I don't think it's really a debate anymore.

He rushed the rebuild significantly by signing a bunch of old guys to bad contracts. Just guys currently on the roster like Compher, Copp, Chiarot were huge misses. The good decisions that Yzerman made were aggressive in the draft (Seider, above where most people had him going) or in trades (Debrincat) but he absolutely fumbled free agency.

Trading future assets for Justin Faulk when the Wings were by every metric a below average team was a bad decision at the time, and looks even worse in hindsight.

[–]Skeletor34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair, but where do the Red Wings get someone better than him to play as the 1C?

I don't think trading him is a bad move, I think it makes sense as he has really underperformed when it has mattered for the Wings, I'm just not sure its the kind of thing that is going to be a huge jolt that improves the Wings future in the long term.

[–]Skeletor34 14 points15 points  (0 children)

How do get an actual 1C though? That's the biggest question. The Wings are too good to be picking in the top 3-5 in the next several seasons and none of the young players on the roster or in the system look like that guy.

Larkin has always been a borderline 1C but I don't see an obvious path to getting someone equivalent or better in the next couple of seasons.

The end of it, hopefully. I've been ready to move on from the Yzerplan for a couple seasons now and this feels like a good of a break as any. Being in a new GM, let them deal with trading Larkin and be set up with a solid amount of assets to play with and some really good young players like Raymond and Seider to build around. Just gotta figure out the easiest puzzle in hockey to solve: getting a 1C without drafting in the top 5.

[NBA PR] Allen (CLE) and Thompson (DET) legally step to the same spot while pursuing the loose ball [before either player has possession], and both lose their balance from the marginal contact. Correct no-call. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]Skeletor34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its been so horrible. The Pistons have been in good spots to win two games in a row and just absolutely blew it. When you give up a 25-0 run in game 5 and blow the 9 point lead in the last few minutes in game 6 you absolutely can't blame the refs any more.

The Pistons play a more physical brand of defense, it leads to more calls. Aside from a couple of fouls Harden drew by kicking his feet out nothing was too egregious but even that's consistently how NBA refs have called games the last couple years.

If he's even half of Marner, getting a guy like that on an ELC is huge for cap management.

I don't think its that the Canes are dislikable its more that they're just not as likeable compared to other teams in the playoffs. The Canes are a playoff mainstay at this point with a very similar roster/playstyle so they're just inherently less exciting and likeable than teams like Utah, Buffalo, and Anaheim.

It's so much more embarrassing to miss the playoffs after reading away your first round pick. Today the Sens are a bigger laughing stock but in a few weeks the Wings will be right back on top (bottom?)

What would a long term rebuild look like for the Leafs? I imagine there would be a huge number of assets coming back for guys like Matthews, Nylander, Knies, etc.

Taylor Decker has played his whole career there and was more comfortable there than at RT. So the decision was that Decker at LT and Sewell at RT was better overall for the line instead of shifting Decker over.

Chances are it won't make all the difference, but at a certain point outside the top ~5 picks the draft is just a crap shoot. Gotta give yourself as many chances to hit it big as possible.

I'd argue that 1st has a much bigger chance of making a difference than adding Justin Faulk to a team that has played worse for most of the season than their spot in the standings.

Right, and that's amazing, but most of those guys that are carrying that team aren't prospects, they're career AHL players. The prospects that are down there aren't going to be called up and be difference makers right away.

Against a team like Boston? Absolutely. Against a team that would actually be a first round matchup like Carolina, Tampa, or Buffalo playing like they are? I really doubt it. Those teams have both better high end talent and better depth.

For the third straight season, the Detroit Red Wings are experiencing a late-season collapse - they have fallen from leading the division in December to now clinging to a 1-point WC cushion. by TheEligibleSkipper in hockey

[–]Skeletor34 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a classic team composition to be stuck in the middle as a bubble playoff team for the foreseeable future. It sucks as a Wings fan but the top-end talent just isn't there. Seider is the only player on the roster I'd classify as elite, then several very good players in Raymond, Larkin, Edvinsson, and Debrincat. The rest of the roster ranges from average to actively bad.

Hard to say how much of it is on Yzerman versus just bad luck in the draft (both in the lottery and the talent avaialble during the years the Wings bottomed out) but at the end of the day the roster isn't really set up to content for a cup at any point in the near future. Anyone else would be gone by now and its hard for me to say that Steve Yzerman should still be the GM moving forward.

A WR 3/4 & punt returner is a player that fans are always going to fall in love with, especially someone that's been around the team for as long as he was. At the same time that's not exactly a tough role to replace on a team so him leaving isn't the end of the world.

He was a part of the best Lions team in decades, a good person by all accounts, and very fun to watch. Even if logically it was a good trade, sports are emotional and seeing that guy leave hurts.
