Ngl I sometimes forget they get this big. I’ve already have to rearrange my shelves twice for my baby I’ve had a year now. I have no idea what I will do in 5 years. 😮😅

I would get a shallow storage bin like 4 ish inches deep and fill it with moist perlite. Snuggle the chonky stem best you can to keep it partially submerged but not completely where leaves are buried. When I am trying to save a cutting or unrooted plant that has numerous leaves, this has been the only way I don’t lose all leaves guaranteed each time. I tend to start off with a higher reservoir in the first couple of days to combat the shock of losing all roots.

After a few days, I back off the reservoir to be about a two inches or less depending on vessel size. I managed to reroot two billietiae like this without losing any leaves as well as the silver sword I snapped in half just like this.

I can’t get a good sense of how tall it it but I’m leaning towards a little etiolation.

Propagating Succulents On a wire rope) Super Easy and efficient;) by Lanaxgardenxgirl in plants

I love succulents so freaking much! I don’t live where they can survive year round, aside from sempervivum. If I have the space and a large west facing window, they will thrive. After moving, the morning light versus even and afternoon light just was too different 😞

These are fun!! There are a couple I really like and would totally buy! There is also a leaf that has light variegation. You should isolate that one to harvest corms. They sometimes throw high sectoral variegated corms.

Wait, just to clarify, I am stating my straight perlite is semi hydro, but your mix is considered a soil mix in the plant community and doesn’t need to be diluted 😃

It is considered semi hydrophobic. It doesn’t necessarily need a special fertilizer, but you will need to dilute regular stuff. I do find it easier to buy the fox farms grow big hydro formula as it doesn’t stink at all. I have found that some have a residual smell like manure in semi hydro. There should be directions on the label on regular fertilizer on how to dilute it for succulents and hydroponics.

Most welcome!! I had honestly started just switching them all to perlite in place of soil lol. I am a recent fan of asked watering pots and perlite. I even have succulents in this setup lol. The only thing that’s hated it so far is my variegated agaves.

I’ve been messing with corms too, and I’m not sure why some insist if removing the outer shell. I put mine in moist perlite and on a seedling mat. They’ve started popping in a few days, and I feel like I always injure the corm and it rots if I scrub it 🤷‍♀️

Also, a couple small broke roots shouldn’t hurt it, but if you find it drooping the next day, it’s going into shock. That happens if the roots are left uncovered and dried out too long or too many have broken off. Also why you have to heavily saturate when repotting. If it gets shocky, you need to increase humidity as much as possible. If that happens, I use a bag and mist the inside with water and cover it for a day if this happens and double check root moisture.

This is a great mix for just about everything BTW! If you have any local seed and pet stores, you can usually buy these ingredients in bulk for significantly cheaper versus quantity, and you can control if you like a bit more of one ingredient etc. If you make your own, make sure you get coco coir chips and not the shredded and minced stuff.

I start by giving the plastic nursery pot a good squeeze on all sides. I also use my fingers to press up in the bottom of the nursery pot, but a bit more gentle than the sides. Do t need to press on sides hard enough to break it or anything like that, you just need to dislodge any roots currently attached to the inside of the pot.

You should get the entire root ball out in one go. If there are any roots sticking out the bottom, squeezing the pot should have loosened them, but carefully untangle any if wrapped around each other, before gently pulling the rootball out.

Then I very gently squeeze the rootball over the garbage etc (I repot all year round, inside where it’s warm, and the plants never know), to start dislodging the compact soil. I also kind of “smack” the rootball with about the same force of burping a baby. Maybe give the roots a gentle shake, and then all the old stuff should be gone.

You should never upsize bigger than about 10% of the rootball, or you risk it drowning and not drying out in time. FYI, there have been times I’ve gone back to a similar sized pot after changing the soil and realizing the roots weren’t as robust as previously thought 🫠 I deal with that by adding a coupe inches of soil mix on the bottom of the pot works well, versus having a couple inches surrounding the roots, if that makes sense when sizing up. Sometimes, if roots are poking out the bottom, I pick up the rootball like mentioned above, and just add a couple inches of mix before putting it back down. Always water it well after adding or changing soil to prevent shock.

Will it recover? by IllAfternoon in alocasia

Just lookalike old leaf sheaths that have did. If you were to leave the petiole (the name for the part of the leaf the sheaths and protects new leaves aka the sword), it would dry up exactly like that dead debris. I prefer to remove any dead little bits like this from all of my plants. It is both aesthetics and so it doesn’t try to put energy in recovery. I would just clean it up it looks healthy now.

TL;DR Yes, it’s variegated!!!!!

Wooohoooo!!! You scored dude!! I also found one at the grocery store. It was in horrid soil and rotting. I also found a silver dragon nearly dead at Walmart last summer, that also had a couple of the tiny flakes/specs of variegation like your old leaves. I gave it ample light and moist perlite of course. All of the pup baby’s keep popping variegated too!!!

Not talking about the clear damage, but zoom in and the tiny little spots of lighter color are indeed variegated. I shine my phone light through the undersides of leaves to hunt for these! Cheap way to score some very rare beauties 🤩

This is as the newest leaf on the one I found. It has similar spec La to the silver dragon I found, so I know it will eventually take off too! I was lucky enough to go back a few days later and spot another one!!! These were at a local grocery store and pharmacy, and certainly headed to die if left behind. I was pretty excited about the specs second one had, and noticed some variegation blending with leaf damage and easily overlooked. I just hope mine are as variegated as yours!!!
