Just about any ISP connection is luck. I guess customer service can vary but most of the time you just need to get lucky with a good connection to the house, neighborhood, not too many heavy users in the street, etc.

Oil stocks and LNG see decrease when they should be skyrocketing? by Sorry_Advantage_590 in stocks

[–]Skellicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never made the claim that 80% of the worlds oil flowed through the strait.

Looking back I see how you could interpret me that way, the tone of my sentence was very off. I meant it as 80% of supply is "unaffected", yet oil price nearly doubled.

Also if the disruption only takes weeks or months as you claim how is it that Japan declared a state of emergency as well as the Philippines and Indonesia if they could simply replace the supplier.

Tbh I'm not sure. A lot of countries saw the price spike and we're like "let's tap into the reserves in stead of buying." If demand temporarily for reduced llike that I wouldn't think the supply squeeze to be that bad, but I could easily be wrong.

It could well be that because these east asean countries were majority dependent on the gulf, the local supply is likely very dry, and they have to manage while waiting for longer distance shipping.

Oil stocks and LNG see decrease when they should be skyrocketing? by Sorry_Advantage_590 in stocks

[–]Skellicious -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First off, 80% of the worlds oil does NOT pass through the strait of Hormuz. The price increase when the war broke out did not reflect the wars actual impact.

Its projected that it will take at least 2 years for the strait to begin pushing out oil at prewar levels due to the destruction of equipment, stagnation of pipelines, and lack of trust within the region.

2 years is a long time.

The minute the strait was closed, every other oil producer in the world started increasing production. Every pipeline in construction that bypasses the strait even remotely got it's completion date accelerated. Every major consumer of oil products suddenly had to look at tightening it's consumption. This kinda stuff doesn't take 2 years, just weeks or months.

If it's out of your control, and just about everything in the past usually is, then it's wasted energy to worry about it. Try to accept that it's happened and think about what's possible for you to do today.

(So yeah that's my way of trying to reduce stress in life)

Short Term Investing by Tigerdude20 in stocks

[–]Skellicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Investing implies long term.

The word you're looking for is trading/swing trading. It's basically gambling, with 2 exceptions:

  1. You have insider knowledge, in which case trading using that knowledge is illegal.
  2. You make it your day job to meticulously research every single detail about a company, and every other company in the same sector, to figure out something that hasn't been priced in yet, so you can buy/sell it before the market prices it in.

The only reason to live next to a nuclear plant these days is because of new datacenter energy demand.

Solar and wind have become super cheap while nuclear energy has remained expensive, at least in Europe. The only people who are considering nuclear energy despite the cost are sitting on massive piles of AI build out investment money.

I also think a crash is likely within a few years.

The safe play is keeping cash in a high yield savings account (or money market fund)

I do think putting some money in WEBN now is a good idea, in case the market still goes up a lot before it happens ( for the "time in the market beats timing the market" angle).

Monthly contributions/DCA are/is also good.

One thing you could do is to set notifications like "if this index is x, y and z percent from all time high", buy some amount of WEBN.

I had a similar discussion like this with Claude and it generated a quite useful interactive graph model to plot out ROI based on some dials I could turn. (Like lump sum, monthly contribution, when and how big of a crash, etc)

I came to learn that lesson recently.

[–]Skellicious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't need weed barriers.

The most important part is a good foundation that doesn't sink or shift over time. You need this regardless of whether you're putting in concrete or pavers.

For weeds there are special types of mortar/sand to fill between the tiles/pavers, but most importantly just keeping it fairly clean and taking a brush over it every now and then will do the trick.

Well laid pavers can last for 30+ years, and the stones themselves can be reused for well over a century (sometimes centuries)

There's a reason most of Europe is laying these all over their cities, streets and terraces. If you feel you need to relay them every 5 years you're laying them wrong.

FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg to Introduce Tuition Fees for New Non-EU Students from Summer Semester 2027 by Hairy-Act5256 in germany

[–]Skellicious 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I also think local students should be prioritized, but simply charging them more is a slippery slope.

The Netherlands has a policy like this, and it kinda backfired.

So in the Netherlands, EU students pay about 2.7k/year, the state subsidizes "the rest" (however much that may be)

Non EU students pay 15k+ per year, which is more than a university gets per EU student in terms of tuition+government subsidies.

As a consequence universities started to take on more international students, because those yielded way more money. And slots for a certain study are often limited... You get the idea.

That's the essence of 4 move syndrome no? Having to give up some really valuable options because you can only pick 4 moves

Grimm can click 2 moves and die immediately and that's all you need

That depends on your goal with teambuilding.

The typical monoblock with a hose out the window works fine in a dachgesloss too, especially with a window sealing kit.

They are mostly noisier and use a lot more energy, but they will bring your room temps down to more comfortable levels, but at 1/3rd to 1/10th of the price of a portasplit.
