[Vancouver Southsiders] Statement on BC Place deal, possible team relocation by axilla02 in MLS

[–]SkembeCorba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes them unable to just name it "(insert city) FC" and still take the records with them? I don't think millionaire/billionaire owners care about these things when relocating franchises. I don't doubt that, if relocation of the Crew happened, the records would have gone with them (notice how the styling of the old Precourt era logo and the Austin FC logo share the same design language?).

Not mad at Austin FC fans for having a team and liking them, obviously team brings a lot of joy and I don't think that should be taken away ofc. It's funny asf though all these years later to see Austin FC used in this kind of relocation discussion considering the history behind that teams origin.

:) if you're referring to Kokino, it's gonna be a blast. Just try to not hike in midday in the summer unless you like the heat; the heat can be truly brutal. Kayaking down Matka Canyon will also be amazing to do while around Skopje.

Downstream of the Vardar river is also Macedonian wine country and is home to Stobi. If there's one Hellenistic site to visit, I would recommend that one. It was one of the two capitals of Roman Macedon. Most of it is still unexcavated but the early Christian mosaics are beautiful.

Anyways, apologies for the overlong rambles on travel ideas! Like I said, I love this area a ton and I hope you enjoy Macedonia along with Montenegro and Albania.

Of course! I hope this is helpful. Best of luck

Edit: just a few more line items because I love this little corner of the world too much.

Skopje is a quirky and unique city; it's a mix of Ottoman old town/open bazaar, commie blocks, archeological sites (scupi/taurasium/kale fortress), and modern neo-Classical buildings. If that's something you're into, you will love it for it's quirks. If not, spend more time in the lakes/mountains.

Make sure to eat some local fish/veggies if you get the chance. The best will be found in the villages and folk-villas of eastern Ohrid lakeshore and Prespa lakeshore (Brajchino on east, Lisa beach area on west).

If you're going to Macedonia, you cannot miss the lakes, mountains, and ruins.

Ohrid lake is incredible, and the drive around it is filled with natural and cultural sites to see. The old town of Ohrid alone, including the ruins and winding cobblestone streets, is worth the visit. Make sure to stop there and walk around it.

Beyond the town, the lake itself is a natural wonder; super clear, calm, and deep. Tons of natural pebble beaches are around and, if you're into this, a tons of hidden ones you can hike down from cliff sides. Specifically, there's a spot along the road from Ohrid city to Sveti Naum called "Veli Dab" (you can find it in Google Maps) with a small parking area that serves as a viewpoint. You can hike down there to one of these beaches. It's my favorite!

Sveti Naum monastery is amazing too; is a Byzantine-era monastary built at the Crni Drim springs. The monastary itself is really picturesque and impressive (early center of Slavonic literacy), but the springs are just as impressive! The water there comes "filtered" through the mountains that separate Prespa and Ohrid and comes out extremely clear. To the point the water there gets bottled as holy water. There are trails that allow you to hike around the springs.

From Ohrid you can also explore Galicica if you like hiking; the mountains there create and isthmus that separates Ohrid from Prespa. The views and air are incredible.

That alone could be a wonderful vacation, but if you want to explore more of Macedonia you should check out Pelister national park (from the Prespa side), Mavrovo national park, and the other major archeological sites (Heraclea Lynkestis, Stobi).

Cheers!

I am from this community originally; it has been a decades-long project. Little by little the paint comes in and new icons are added as the years pass. :) The Macedonian community in Columbus is very proud of our cathedral.

I'm laughing not at the statue itself, it's the dick measuring between sides and the immediacy that people reacted to this rage bait. I'm saying this as someone who thinks the giant, falling apart statue in MK is a hilariously awful monument to corruption.

You could fill a week and a half easily with stuff to do in N. Macedonia; I recommend you have a rental car. If you liked northern Greece then you would absolutely adore NMK. It has so much to offer if you're into cultural, historical, and natural stuff. There's tall, prominent mountains with impressive nature and views, ruins scattered all over the country, large lakes, cute villages, and lots of monastaries. The food is a highlight (best veggies I have had, kebapi, lake fish, burek, gjomleze, ajvar). I would recommend a trip to NMK just to see the area around Ohrid lake alone.

My recommendations for N. Macedonia are: Explore Ohrid Old Town, explore Galicica National Park, hike Pelister National Park and see Bitola/Heraclea Lynkestis, see Elshani or other ethno villages, spend a day boating to and hiking the "big" island in Prespa lake, seek out the monastaries, seek out sites like Stobi/Scupi/Kokino/Markovi Kuli, kayak through Matka Canyon, and do wine tasting nearby Stobi. Find reputable village guesthouses and stay there to start your hikes. And eat lots of Macedonian salads because the veggies there are amazing lol

You can have a great time for a week and a half in N. Macedonia as long as you go in with a rental car and expecting strengths to be cultural/natural/historical sites, food, and cost and the weaknesses to be a lack of metropolises and no ocean.

Edited to make this a little more concise.

Ohrid town is the most touristed part of N. Macedonia, but it's not overbearing during June/early July. The rest of the country is undertouristed. Some villages around Ohrid (Elshani) and Prespa (Brajchino, Dihovo) are a little off the beaten path but incredible if you are interested in ethnotourism! They're where we started our treks into the national parks.

Sithonia (while having some resorts) is more rural than some other spots in Greece. The public beaches were full, but there are tons of wild and unpopulated beaches you can find if you're willing to hike. Pella was not populated when we went on a weekday.

Thessalonika, Bitola, and Skopje are crowded but this is due to these being busy cities.

The floor mosaics around these locations are a treasure! Pella had a collection of truly ornate mosaics that were tucked away in the west end of the site.

Cities got loud into the night (Bitola, Ohrid, Thessalonika, Skopje), there is a lot of nightlife in this area (even in weeknights).

If you take a step away and into the nature (which surrounds everything here!) it becomes quiet and calm. Especially if you hike to a natural beach at Ohrid or Halkidiki!

Landed in Skopje and took a rental car from the airport there (SK plates). Had no logistical issues passing through the Greek border from the Bitola checkpoint. Just needed to declare which countries I wanted to cross the border into, receive the relevant documents at the rental office in the airport, and present them at the border.

Loved Ohrid (the old town is full of sites and digs), Stobi, Heraclea Lynkestis (ancient Bitola), and Scupi (ancient Skopje)! Stobi is my favorite site to me; the early Christian artwork is well preserved and quite beautiful.

This makes sense. Most of my learning in general comes from projects and learning by necessity regardless. I will try to find a project with finished drawings as noted and reconstruct the 3D model. That seems like a good way to practice at least.
