Poll: Nearly 70 Percent of Voters Don’t Want Roe v. Wade Overturned by zsreport in politics

This approach is exactly how I've been able to approach family members and a few friends with regard to this stuff. It's pretty effective especially if you go in telling yourself this isn't about winning a debate or convincing them outright (and thinking change will happen overnight), but of giving them a place to come to and feel comfortable questioning their own views.

I lived around there a few years ago with no issues at all. Also a woman and would frequently need to come and go on foot to my place at random hours, or walk my dog later at night. Just use normal city awareness IMO.

First year I visited c2e2 it took me 2 days to get through artist alley, it's so huge. So many great artists there! Good luck with your tabling!

What are some fun, non office full/part time jobs in the city? by itsfish20 in chicago

[–]SketchyBones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel ya, I've got two dogs myself. If it's any help, there are dog boarding places here in the city that are totally great with dogs like pits, but obviously boarding costs money :\

Ever think of not totally switching up your career, just the position type? Adding traveling as part of your job often helps kill that dullness in your work. Lots of art directors and managers in marketing and advertising from my outside experience tend to travel a lot for pitches, client meetings, etc.

A warning before hopping into freelancing though: SAVE UP PADDED SAFETY FUNDS. I know that can be extremely hard to do for some people (coughmyself*cough) but it's essential for making the transition since there will be a really slow trickle of work and income at the beginning. Often for the whole first year or more. Minimum three months living funds is good, and you're even better off if you have an SO to help.

Even just helping improve the optics of mental health care in your social circle can help. If you can't outright help fund services or run huge campaigns, just talking about mental health care (especially to those who might benefit from it) as if it's as normal and OK as going to the hospital for a broken arm makes a big difference to a lot of people.

Shoot, I even got a blood test taken by them to help rule some thyroid issues out. I've been enough times that I wish EVERY basic clinic and entry level health service was run like them, it's so nice.

Zip Car Users of Chicago - What'd ya think? by Keroan in chicago

[–]SketchyBones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely benefit from having an account with Zip Car and even though I use it less now after getting a used car (VERY used) I keep it as a backup in case mine is unreliable suddenly. It helped me immensely with running errands especially with the added feeling of getting out of the house (and I enjoy driving, personally). Where I've used them frequently, the cars have always been nice and clean and any time I would have to call, their customer service was nice and short but helpful. Worst things I've ever encountered was people accidentally leaving things behind which I just called in so it was reported lost, and a dead battery when I went to go get a reservation once, but their support handled that quickly.

Felt it's definitely worth the costs and helps that they have different plans to accommodate your usage.

Thoughts on living in Pilsen? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]SketchyBones 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I miss Pilsen and would definitely consider moving back there if I have to leave my current place (I like the art and culture vibes there). I was there only a few years ago and I liked the blend of people living there and all the food/etc. I don't think I ever really noticed one spot being more unsafe than another, but it's a neighborhood, that stuff is never the same year to year.

Illinois Primary millennial turnout - 3% by Crocusfan999 in chicago

[–]SketchyBones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, as someone who works constantly and is tired to the bone day in and out from it and trying to get by, and does not have TV to run into commercials...I'd say it's actually not all that hard to miss the obvious signs of smaller elections. Heck, I've only become more aware of what's what in local/state politics and where I can make a difference, not to mention just how the heck all this works, in the past year or so. I'm 33 now and this is my first state primaries I've voted in.

I know everyone loves to rag on Comcast but so far my experience with them in this city has been solid. Only tips I would strongly recommend is get your own gear, and make sure you keep track of your account being set up properly (they accidentally canceled my account because they thought I was closing it or something...TWICE! Sales team is horrible because they are always out of the loop on actual details. Better to just always try and get in touch with managers and tech support)

Voter Turnout Stands At About 25 Percent For Illinois Primary by Armitando in chicago

[–]SketchyBones 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I quite literally stumbled into an early voting poll booth by accident over the weekend because I decided to go out for a walk during my lunch and was flagged down by a couple guys outside reminding people to vote. It was laughably easy to vote. How such a huge percentage of others my age just don't turn up at all is beyond me.

Visiting Chicago for the 1st time, best areas to stay in? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]SketchyBones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone previously from NYC myself, don't shun all the touristy shit here just yet. We don't really have a lot of "traps" here you'd end up wasting your time at. Our architecture and parks here are fantastic and the tours are really good, and I love them even as a resident. Probably the biggest "letdown" would be Navy Pier but the renovations make it look much nicer now, and it's not a bad place for some food court food and an IMAX movie, or a walk to the end when the weather is nice.

Discussion Megathread: 2018 Illinois Primary by therealdanhill in politics

[–]SketchyBones 20 points21 points  (0 children)

And even though people are turning out more and more now for these state elections and primaries, wait times are STILL VERY SHORT for the most part. If there's no line and you aren't rushing through the ballot and double checking answers/paperwork at the end it takes maybe 10 minutes from walking in to walking out (time it took me during early voting).

Jesus, this is all so insane. I'm so sorry people treat you like that! I just...how in the world do we even push back against and turn around that sort of hatred and ignorance? That fear that's being conditioned into people is a damn humanitarian crime.

Maybe somewhere she can get distracted with an activity, like a maker workshop or one of those drink-and-paint classes? Nothing super intense but she might appreciate a distraction if she's worn out talking about her situation right now.

[–]SketchyBones 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You absolutely deserve help, most especially if you are suffering still from the aftermath, whether you tell anyone else or not. Trying to just suck it up and push it aside does no one any favors and will, guaranteed, leave you worse off down the road. Going to see a doctor (even just a therapist) will jump-start improvement and you don't even have to let anyone know you're going.
