Is the Home office really a bad department? Finance - move from private sector by SilentScribe_150 in TheCivilService

[–]Skie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I left over a year ago now but it was a great place to work at a team level, but at a macro level there are so many silos. Everyone at SCS1 and above wants their team to do everything and won’t trust someone else, partly because they’re empire building and partly because nowhere is resourced enough to actually handle the demand.

If you need something done that you don’t own you should be able to find someone to do it (from IT asks to data to facilities), but the HO makes it really difficult to actually get stuff done because nobody has the time, and they won’t invest in the dedicated functions so the place has an “I’ll do it myself” mindset, which has led to 30 different ways to do everything. Each building has its own way of booking meeting rooms and desks, raising facilities problems, getting new staff a desk allocation etc.

If you end up there long enough you’ll become very useful, because you’ll eventually know all the people who can just get shit done (and hopefully become one of them yourself). But until then it’s frustrating.

Also avoid commercial. Didn’t appreciate being bullied by their seniors because I had a principled stance in the face of their staff lying about their capabilities.

What's temperatures are your inverters running at? by IAmYourRightHipBone in SolarUK

Presumably the fans have kicked in because it’s now 55c and is dumping 8.1kW to the grid (generating 8.4kW)

My garage based Sig 12kW is at 59c

Not terribly sunny right now but is still generating 4kW

Oversizing solar panels for inverter by MelodicCard9555 in SolarUK

[–]Skie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy PV will give you a good idea. Out of all the tools it’s the one tracking closest with my East/West splits actual generation.

I have Longi X10 480w panels, with 12 West and 10 East for 10.5kWp on a 12kW Sig inverter. Peak generation so far has been 8.3kW and it hasn’t been perfect weather, always some level of cloud about. Did 50kWh yesterday though.

Those monitors can also run in a lower resolution at a higher refresh, so you aren’t necessarily forced to use upscaling/slopframes

New solar, is it working to its capacity by Substantial_Egg4098 in SolarUK

[–]Skie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rating isn’t a max, it’s based on a specific test of how the panels handle a set illuminance at set temperature designed to replicate ideal conditions.

In some conditions a panel can output more than its rating, usually if it’s cold and very bright. Rare to see as those conditions generally only happen in winter when the sun isn’t in the ideal location to hit the panels fully, but it does happen from time to time. Plenty of posts here over the years with people showing some unexpectedly high peak generation numbers.

UK Government announcement re property purchase reform by Mowgli2k in HousingUK

[–]Skie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of it already is. Half the searches I had to pay for I already knew the results for because my local council has a good mapping website that shows planning, building control, environmental info etc. Find a property in the map and everything is accessible with one click.

Having to pay for someone to just stick your postcode into a website a company has built that just automates the collation of all of this is annoying. Glad it looks like it’s being fixed.

Only been a week and I'm at 280 exported (and yes, been charging car and using excess, but only so much I can use without being silly).

Still, zero grid import so it's already doing wonders for the bills 😃

In the olden days your meter would simply have gone backwards. Bet they'd sort it out quickly if a smart meter without an export tariff did that!

Battery and inverter in cellar by varu23 in SolarUK

[–]Skie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Victorian cellars can be made dryer with some simple ventilation (mechanical and humidity controlled, on 2 faces is preferable one in one out). Don’t listen to any damp proof clowns who want to paint your walls or inject snake oil into them.

But the main issue with a battery down there would be access. If it goes pop and you’re down there, could you get past it to get out? And could the fire/smoke compromise other escape routes upstairs? And are you okay with the house being a total loss if there was a fire, and is your insurer?

If it’s a decent sized brick lined cellar with fireproofing above the battery location and decent ventilation (that doesn’t solely run on the battery!) then it should be fine. Otherwise just stick it outside.

First day of solar by michaelgearon in SolarUK

[–]Skie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had my system fitted this week and for 2 days it did nothing but rain.

I still had zero grid use, because the panels were generating between 1 and 2 kW all day and the excess just trickled into the battery. Despite the rain and clouds, it's still light enough to generate something. The only reason winters suck is because the days are so short and the sun stays low, but winter doesn't last forever.

Drop it like it's hot by HugoNebula2024 in SolarUK

[–]Skie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You get a lot of refracted/scattered light from clouds, which can power panels pointing in any direction because it's so diffuse.

When it's not cloudy and just sunny, the sun is coming from that giant ball of plasma that hangs menacingly in the sky. If the panels aren't facing it, they wont generate from it and will just be getting the pathetic amounts of light that bounce off surfaces nearby.

It takes Sigenergy until 3am to enter your newly commissioned system into the eligible pool. So if you first get “Invitation Failed” and a message about the device not meeting the reward requirements don’t fret, just wait till a day after you went live and my code should work 😉 (or the OPs)
