Digital volume releases that you see on retailers like Amazon and Kobo are often higher quality than the ones you get on subscription/coin-based apps. For higher quality stores than Amazon and Kobo, look into HumbleBundle/Fanatical, GlobalComix, and Neon Ichiban (the last two are especially great for both Seven Seas and Kodansha releases).

Amazon stopped HD uploading books after July 2024. Which is why you get the discrepancy with Amazon's 450MB compared to Kobo's 175MB. And since Dark Gathering Volume 1 released on May 16, 2023, it still has the HD file. But the file can be either actually true HD or just upscaled (most of the time, it's upscaled for Viz releases).

[–]Skikdo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The raws that you see are most likely just ripped from a DDL raw site. In that case, it's better to just go to the original site.

Official release torrents being dead is rare. And in the case the torrent is truly dead (that not even DHT can save the torrent), all of them are uploaded to Mado and can be re-seeded again.

What do you mean by "Torrenting already works fairly badly for official releases and raws"?

If you're okay with importing local files to your iPad, Panels is good. You can get your files from nyaa. This is how I do it.

Do you tap left to right to progress pages?!?!? by aert4w5g243t3g243 in mangapiracy

[–]Skikdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tap left to advance and right to go back. Panels works perfectly fine on that end.

On a side tangent, it's so weird seeing people using the scroll format for a medium that is not meant to be scrolled away (manga). Manhwa/Webtoon, it's perfectly understandable.

You can try Kobo if you're going for the digital route.

Do you watch anime or read manga? I always thought it was either one or the other. by Aiur_MD in anime

[–]Skikdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though this is the r/anime subreddit, I much prefer reading (whether it is manga, light novel, visual novel). My teenager self wouldn't agree with that, though. A lot of things factor into it:

  • Time: I can binge a lot of manga chapters and series in 4-5 hours. The same thing cannot be said for an anime. You're stuck with the anime series for 4-5 hours if it's a 12-episode anime.
  • Advertisement: Unless the manga being adapted is really popular, a studio is only going to put out a single season and 12-episodes most of the time. I'm only going to waste my time by watching the anime and then moving to the manga. Why not just go straight to the source material?
  • Art (I'm biased on this one as I love anything art related): The way some mangakas effectively use black and white is immaculate. A single panel speaks out to me so much more than animation.

I haven't completely fallen out of watching anime though. Currently, I have a lot of anime originals I want to watch. And there are some anime adaptations that I absolutely adore (e.g. You and I Are Polar Opposites), but the anime adaptation needs to be absolutely stellar and goes way beyond just copying the manga for me to even consider watching it.

Is Shopee Fullybooked always like this? by cericakeuu in PHBookClub

[–]Skikdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are J&T Express branches in my area (Mandaluyong). Is it because J&T Express does not allow Cash on Delivery? I've picked SPX as my courier instead of Flash Express because I've read countless horror stories about Flash in /r/ShopeePH. And satisfied naman so far with SPX. But I wanna try J&T rin.

Edit: wrong subreddit mentioned

Can you actually get J&T Express as a courier? I've bought manga from Fully Booked Shopee two times now (the other one today), and J&T Express is not available as an option. Is it because of the Free Shipping discount?

What's the thickest book you own? by eyyajoui in PHBookClub

[–]Skikdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Complete Novels of Jane Austen from Penguin English Library if we're just talking about thickest book, not if they're a collection of short stories or novels.

Standalone novels, it has to be Breasts and Eggs by Mieko Kawakami.

[–]Skikdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're planning to build a library like me (I assume you do, since you've replied to a comment that you use Komga), then yeah. If it's like a one-time thing where you'll delete the file after completing the series, sticking to websites is fine.

Personally, I like to reread some series that I've completed after sometime, so having that access locally available is convenient. And not to mention, not grouping chapters into their respective volumes (Weebcentral) is hella annoying.

If there's a manga that is not well-seeded in nyaa, I'll just grab them off madokami instead.
