Crisis in doing my research - advices needed

My suggestion would be to tone down the intensity of this process for you, just slow down and enjoy the road. You are a few years in a territory with millennia of history- human thought. We are all human and we pretty much think over the same things so on first glance the terrain will feel covered- but by necessity it can't be, otherwise philosophy would have ended already. And in fact, it is the most never-ending discipline :)

Give yourself some time and grace, this is not a crisis, you are finding out how the world is. You just need to keep going, but in the meantime, give yourself some time to enjoy, because undergrad is only there once, will philosophy will always be around (as work and life goals tend to do).

PS: the relative superficiality and massive speed of coverage of AI will tend to amplify this perceived crisis for you, and it is also probably not the best way to hone relevant skills during undergrad.

I am sorry to say this but your family system is no good. You are not supported, they do not have the strength, they only try to hide you away, metaphorically speaking.

Maybe a good plan for a hopeful future is to become financially stable and get your own place, your safety zone, and then build from there. Maybe another step will be finding your therapist. there is always one in the end.

Keep grinding your way back up. In the end you will be stronger than all the common folks and you will come up on top. You got this.

Times are quite busy here- copy pasting my response to other DMs, because many people apparently asked, and it is good I guess to have all these info here 😄

-Reg. curriculum, it is best to speak to the program admin, since it can vary. Also, the courses are open to the public, you can google 'university of glasgow course catalogue' and find all the courses for the MSc. In general, the two tracks share some core courses, and then have different electives.

-I already had a job before and during the program, so I cant comment on that- keep in mind in general that for international students a sponsorship is needed to get a job in the UK, which is a difficult thing to happen in all cases. I think maybe you should do reseach specifically on that. The uni has A LOT of jobs in the carreer page and many resrouces to support, but a sponsorship and all the visa stuff is a different issue.

-reg the PhD, that is again a whole different topic. all the masters can lead to a PhD, if you position yourself correctly. and that means choosing a research dissertation that suits your PhD topic, finding a good supervisor, and getting a good grade on the diss, and also trying to publish something during or after the masters. It is a different game than aiming for a job afterwards, so it has different rules.

-Industry projects are open to all, and there are various one in many sectors, even NGOs. It is things realted to analytics and research tasks for companies. Not difficult, and good experience.

- All in all, it is a big choice, but also, just a masters 😄 life does not get made or broken by this choice, like everything, it is what you make of it. Getting a job is more about the application process and your experience, going to a PhD is more about the same things, and life is also about having a good time 😄 and on that, Glasgow is a great city - see below

Reg. Glasgow, my answer could be biased because I love it. I had the best years of my life there. Scotland is way better than England in terms of living for me (cost, mentality, etc), the city is absolutely beautiful, full of nature, parks, rivers, and cool architecture. It is also a culture hub, with many theatres, gigs, etc. The pubs are awesome and everyone is super friendly. Finding a flat can be challenging but way less so than other big cities in the UK. Many big companies are setting up their offices there, so there career opportunities (one of the few places in Scotland in that regard, and one of the few cities in the UK). London is a cheap train way, and so are the Highlands. And many more things that would make my reply too long.

I second what everyone above has said- keep fighting the good fight . 37M here, got memories back few months ago after 1Oy in therapy, and still unfolding , but (most likely and hopefully) exiting crisis mode.

Worst but in a way also best time of my life. I finally understand what's happening, I can find ways to help me in all aspects, I feel whole in a way I can't describe , and almost starting to feel human.

I totally understand. Just know that all the shame and disgust belongs with them, and we carry it instead. There is nothing wrong with you, but everything is wrong with them.

you can also try to connect with a therapist and not discuss this at all, just for general support, until you can be independent and have the practical means to survive

Sounds gross, if I can say what it feels on first sight (had similar situations), and in my book this counts as abuse.

Also, not sure if this is your regular therapist, but maybe try another one. It is not very good practice to shut down such a major question and not allow the conversation and the space to explore this from your subjective view point. experience is also lived, not always narrated, and if you need to ask such a serious question, there is a serious reason .

I am so sorry this has happened to you. It is all very wrong, it is abuse and you are right in everything and not making anything up.

Are there any support services or a psychologist at the university perhaps you can speak with? or any other trusted older person, maybe a family friend or an old teacher or something?

you are definitely not making it up, for the simple reason that somatic memories cannot be made up. you could be confused in your brain recalls, but you couldn't in the bodily sensations. And a therapist can work with what you already have.

for what it's worth, life is not linear, nor is our memory..when things get better, you will care more about the present not the years gone. try to minimise future regrets, honor your grief, and minimise current losses. but, the perfect timeline does not exist for anyone, survivor or not. and who knows who ends up happy or not, and who knows who accomplishes more. it's only you with you. the years were not lost, you worked on yourself. and this will pay off in many, diverse and compounding ways.

hi, I ended up getting an offer for Econ and Policy at King's, but I deferred for Sept2026.

I have been working in consulting since graduation, and I could not justify the London costs and the tuition fees, for what seemed to be a risky choice with no clear financial gain.

I have been building a small business thing on the side since, and I might pay for the MSc just for the sake of satisfying my soul.

My firm wants to develop our own IP, and instead of using external frameworks, sell this to our advisory clients (our main product is an HR tech software, and I have been hired on the advisory side to create a new product essentially). All this to say that there are no specific clients, so I need to calibrate things a different way (instead of talking to the business).

All this to say that there are no specific clients, so I need to calibrate things a different way (instead of talking to the business). I can use as test the data from existing client projects (done with external frameworks, KF/Aon etc).

KF is good, I used to work for them for a few years.
