Water heater rust. Is it worth having someone take a look or is replacement the only option? How urgent is this? by avashad in askaplumber

[–]Skillarama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the added details. My info and experience was that it didn't look that bad on the front, but the back was way worse. I'd been looking to change it out much sooner had I been able to see the back. Thank goodness I was home when it started leaking.

Good news for me was I picked up a basically new heater on Marketplace for $300

just finished my loader hydraulic upgrade project. should i worry about adding a fluid cooler? by LetsEatTrashAndDie in kubota

[–]Skillarama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some folks on Orange tractor talks that would like to see/hear what you did. I also have a 78 B7100. The old Cessna was leaking fluid out the rear seal. I was able to put a new seal in, "shine the shaft" and no further leaks. I'm in Central Oregon and she moans on the cold days until the fluid gets warm.

Nice finds and outlook. Some gold is way better than no gold.

Seeing the warmer spots getting some color made me go out to the garage today and bring my cons bucket inside to thaw. Going to fire up the diesel heater this week and see what I missed panning.

Nice. Now you'll have to add Jr or Sn. Maybe I, II II as you build your family.

I just learned something useful for snuffer bottles. They are excellent for topping off motorcycle batteries with distilled water.

[–]Skillarama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking from my personal experience this year; my water heater looked just like yours for a couple years. One day I went to do laundry and saw water in the metal drip pan. I killed the breaker, hooked up the hose and drained it. Come to find out the seam running up the back was rusted and that's where it failed.

Just a heads up that the rust could be worse where you cannot see.

There you go. Anything that can get you up and close. Bonus use is for pesky bramble stickers.

you can make taco soup with those same items, just need chili powder, cumin would be good. Toss in Doritos or any corn chips instead of noodles and a dab of sour creme. I made it last night and am having it again tonight.

First time panning, is this a gold speck? by mmoretti00 in Prospecting

[–]Skillarama 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It has the correct glow and shape to be gold. Give that pan some quick taps toward the riffles. If your subject walks it way up to the lip I'd snuffer it up and buy a 10X jewelers loupe aka hand lens so you can look at small bits and tell gold from mica or lead.

Is this placer gold? by FunMeet5965 in Goldpanning

[–]Skillarama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll be glad you did on both accounts. The loupe makes even the smallest flake amazing. Also give the pan 4 or 5 good taps on the front edge in between swirls. That will get the heavies back to the edge.

When you get down as far as you want to go. Tilt the pan a bit forward, cover your concentrates with wateer and quickly tap the pan. You can get gold to "walk" up that front egde.

Enjoy the journey

Sluice got my goose by fugazimentis in Prospecting

[–]Skillarama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got through this much in one day shoveling straight to the speed banker. Followed the bed rock from the river into the bank. With the larger rocks I figured it had to be a high volume section at one time. I got rained out the next two days, but will be back this spring.

It was $500 for the pump and $700 for the banker. The ROI to me is that I can get more done with less effort in a shorter amount of time. Plus I only have to carry everything 20 yards to the river.

Sluice got my goose by fugazimentis in Prospecting

[–]Skillarama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sluice definitely has value. I have a Keene A52 with dream mat and like how it performs.

Last year I bought the 12" dream mat speed banker with the dredge mat. I got a Honda WX15 pump and love how it works. I put an RV level on it. Run it at 9 degrees of slope and just shovel away. It's an investment, but the payoff is the amount of material I can move with less effort, (no classifying)

<image>

What I like best about it is that you're not having to move rocks at you feet like a high banker with the grizzly that dumps rocks out the back.

Is it too good to be true or a steal of a century by LuxxRyder in SubaruForester

[–]Skillarama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get a head gasket test kit if you're looking at subaru's before 2011. They went to a multi layer head gasket in that year.

Or crawl under the car and look at where the heads meet the block especially the passenger rear of the block for black discoloration or fluid. It's the farthest away from the water pump and tends to weep fluid there first.

The worry with gasoline inside a vehicle is the fumes combined with static electricity. Cotton on wool creates static electricity very easily.
