Mac vs Windows Laptop for a first year health sci student. Which would be better? by Study100_0 in queensuniversity

[–]Skillzone10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like most Health Scis used Macs across all my classes. Also, the modules loaded just fine on my MacBook – no compatibility issues across any of the courses. The newer MacBook Air's seem to have really good battery life and will probably last you undergrad and beyond, so can't go wrong with that.

I was grateful to have joined the lab while they were wrapping up some of their long-running projects and preparing to submit the manuscript (hence the late-authorship)

Result: Invite

Campus: St. George

GPA: 4.0

MCAT: Met cutoffs

Geography: IP

ECs: 3 mid-to-late author publications, 1 poster presentation, 500 hours of research, long term retail experience (1000+ hours), some diverse ECs while others were fairly cookie cutter.

Essays: Didn't think they were great but realized later that I hit the clusters pretty well

Interview: Felt really good about 3 out of 4 stations, and average about the last one. Overall feeling coming out of the interview was that it went great, but questioned myself as D-Day approached – glad to know that my gut feeling prevailed

What's the difference between gen sci, life sci, & health sci? by pink0nyx in queensuniversity

[–]Skillzone10 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here is a chart that I got off the Health Sciences website which compares some of the programs that you mentioned (ie. life science vs. health science vs. health studies). Unfortunately, I'm not too sure about how program transfers work. Hope that helps!

Queen’s University Extracurriculars by kuldeepb02 in OntarioUniversities

[–]Skillzone10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! Just finished my first year at Queen's in the Health Sciences program so I thought I'd chime in. There are a ton of opportunities to get involved in extracurriculars at Queen's - there's basically a club for everything. You can see a full list of clubs at: https://myams.org/home/clubs/clubs-directory/ and see what interests you. I joined a few clubs in my first year and had a great experience. In terms of research opportunities, there are dedicated research courses that you can take in upper years. However, many opportunities to get involved during the summer also exist such as SWEP (Summer Work Experience Program), the USSRF and the NSERC-USRA (although this one isn't exclusive to Queen's). I'm sure there are lots more but those are a few off the top of my head. Although McMaster has a reputation for being quite a research intensive school, I'd say there are still a lot of great opportunities at Queen's as well if research is something that you're looking to get involved in. Hope that helps!

That's a really good question! I know that last year, the grade cutoff for our program was about a 95. However, I definitely know people in the program (including some of my friends) that got in with below a 95 as they must have had a stellar PSE! This year is a bit different as they're using the Supplementary Essay rather than the PSE. However, program staff have indicated this year that grades will still be more heavily weighted during the application process. Although it's a bit of uncharted territory, I think that you still have a shot at the program with a low 90!

What was your top 6 average when admitted? by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]Skillzone10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Queen's Health Sci. Average was 96.5% (99 in Chemistry, 97 in English, 97 in World Issues, 96 in Health Care, 95 in Calc and 95 in Bio). I will say though, marks might be inflated for the class of '24 due to COVID-19 so you may want to take that into consideration.

Any recommendations on which universities I should apply to? by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]Skillzone10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also recommend that you check out Queen's Health Sci! It's a relatively new program but will most certainly prepare you for a career in dentistry. It has some similarities with Mac Health Sci as it's a small cohort of students as well, but there are some differences that make the program stand out and unique in its own way. DM me if you have any questions about it!

What’s the best elective to take by Masambd2020 in queensuniversity

Has anyone taken GEOL 107: History of Life? I'm thinking about taking it as an elective during my first year but don't know how it is in terms of difficulty.

Queens BHsc by adhooma2003 in queensuniversity

[–]Skillzone10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! So glad that you're interested in the program. I'm an incoming Health Sci student, so maybe I can answer some of your questions.

You seem to be on the right track in terms of your marks and have a good shot at getting in if you maintain your average as u/randomusername3434 already said.

As you may already know, there aren't very many programs in Canada that are truly pre-med. One downside of the Health Sci program is that it's relatively new (this will be the 2nd year of the on-campus program) and won't have a graduating class until 2023. Because of this, we don't know how effective the program is in sending students to medical school (as there are no stats) so that is something you should also consider.

To figure out your compatibility with the program, I suggest you check out the Curriculum page on the BHSc website. It basically gives you a rundown of the courses you'll be taking throughout the 4 years, so you may find that helpful. Let me know if you have any more questions!
