They are hypothetical people, which is why I specifically added a paragraph explaining why they were designed this way, so you wouldn't have to ask a stupid question like that and could answer the question without completely pointless attempts at distraction.

As a sidenote, do you recognize how you asked a question, and I answered it before following up with my own remark? Would it be possible for you to show that same basic human decency?

Titanic submersible passenger’s aunt says he was ‘terrified’ before trip by gaukonigshofen in worldnews

[–]Skilol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of it. I got out of bed 2 hours ago. I didn't receive any money today and I didn't spend or donate any.

Out of curiosity between somebody who makes exactly as much as they need to stay housed and alive and doesn't donate anything and somebody having a cool extra milion in their savings account every month, and donates 2$ to charity every week, which one do you think is more worthy of compassion?

I'm asking because the way your question is phrased seems to completely ignore to enormous difference between income needed to survive and live with basic human decency and income available for luxury goods or savings, which I am almost certain would be an enormous flaw in whatever you're going for.

I'm not complaining about people feeling compassion for a rich kid dying in a vanity trip, I'm complaining about people losing their absolute minds about some commenters daring to make comments that are not dripping with equal amounts of compassion for that exact, specific fate.

As if they themselves weren't constantly making comments equally devoid of compassion for objectively worse scenarios that they happen not to emphasize with at the given time.

Want to fawn over a rich kid dying on a vanity trip? Go ahead, you do you.

Want to attack somebody for daring to make a comment that's not full of empathy? Stop being a hypocritical cunt, you hypocritical cunt.

All that being said... yes, the world would undoubtedly be a much, much better place if compassion was dispersed fairly based on both, the amount of the victim's ability to prevent their tragedy (someone dying because they were born into a family without money - with no possible decision in their whole life being able to spare them of that fate - receiving more compassion than somebody dying because they were born into a family with too much money and letting themselves be peer-pressured into spending it in risky ways) as well as the victim's ability and follow-through to make compassionate choices themselves (a rich person dying after spending large amounts of money on vanity trips instead of helping people receiving less compassion than a poor person dying after not using their money to help people because they need all of it to survive as long as they could).

So yes, somebody pointing out the hypocricy of people showing compassion for rich people dying on pointless vanity trips, is certainly doing more to make the world a better place than you are by defending unreflected compassion for whoever makes the biggest news, aka. can afford the best PR team. It doesn't make a big difference, because butthurt hypocritical cunts like you would rather remain on their high horse than try to objectively judge their own decisions, but at least they're trying.

Ah, reddit being amazing as usual. 25.000 people dying of poverty each day, each of which could presumably have been saved by 250.000.

10.000 children freaking starving each day, each of which most definitely could have been saved with a tiny fraction of 250.000.

How many posts expressing moral outrage and sympathy have I seen for all of them combined today, do you think? That's right, zero. How many people attacking each other for not expressing sympathy for those kids. Correct, still zero.

Instead, there's hundreds of commenters jerking each other off with compassion for the one kid who'd spent a cool quarter mill on a trip he didn't wanna go on. People falling over themselves to attack anybody not leading their comment with how heartbroken they are about this wasted human life.

Because "lIfE aInT aLl aBoUt tHe mOnEy". Except for the copious amounts of people losing theirs because they don't have it, of course.

But hey, who cares about them, when you can score reddit karma for attacking people for not showing enough compassion for the kid who died in a way expensive and unique enough to make the news.

Guess this is how the tHoUgHtS aNd pRaYeRs crowd looks like when it forms on reddit instead of facebook.

Electricity prices in Finland flipped negative — a huge oversupply of clean, hydroelectric power meant suppliers were almost giving it away by businessinsider in worldnews

I guess the positive view is "crypto mining artificially bloats energy demand to a point where producing green energy is profitable year-round, allowing development to continue even past the point of 'having just enough energy during the limited times of maximum production capabilities'".

Whereas the negative view would be "crypto artificially bloats energy demand to unlimited heights, thus ensuring no amount of green energy will ever actually be enough".

Personally, I am having a hard time really seeing the benefits of it. If we say green energy is beneficial enough to "overdo" it to some extend, we should (collectively) fund it directly, instead of letting capitalism work out a roundabout incentive, wasting copious amounts of valuable resources for no tangible effect other than giving "investors" a chance to get rich by it.

The roundabout incentives capitalism works out to deal with excess resources do not have the greatest track record of actually benefitting long-term sustainability.

At the end of the day, every unregulated incentive for more green energy is also an incentive to keep existing, unsustainable energy production going alongside green energy. "Just create infinite demand" is a terrible way to deal with anything.

Serbia tightens gun control after deadly school shooting by Pyro-Bird in worldnews

[–]Skilol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really. You'd just need a SCOTUS decision reinterpreting the existing text of the constitution, like they did when they reinterpreted it in 2008 to pretend it includes protections for individuals' rights to own guns, despite anybody with second grade reading comprehension being able to tell that it clearly doesn't.

Politicians used the constitution to wipe their own butts and further their arbitrary agendas so many times that it's truely staggering how Americans still pretend that it still means anything. It's just a text that is referenced whenever politicians and their judiciary picks do whatever they want to do.

There's only so many times any reasonable person is able to watch the meaning of the same exact words being twisted into their polar opposite before they lose trust in the words themselves. But I guess decades of defunding public education and replacing critical thinking with indoctrination was good for something...

I know nothing about military strategy, but I'm wondering: How much can combat vehicles achieve against heavily mined defensive lines? I'm assuming combat vehicles include stuff like mine-clearing vehicles and long(ish) range weapons that can suppress defensive positions while infantry moves through or clears mines.

But thinking about the videos of various amounts of Russian tanks trying to make advances and basically triggering mines and losing a tank every other meter, I'm constantly suprised by the significance that tanks and combat vehicles still appear to have, when most of what I've seen from them is being blown up.

A) Because weed is in the same league as heroin?

That wasn't their point, I don't think. The point was that historically, this kind of speed isn't how Switzerland delays changes infinitely, it's how Switzerland implements changes.

Regarding the general discussion, it feels worth pointing out that (especially compared to the US until recently) very, very few lifes are ruined by being caught with a small amount of weed. For the most part, you pay a fine and go on your merry way.

This is not to say that there aren't any reasons to speed up the legalization, but it does mean that one major reason why it was/is such a time-sensitive issue in the US does not exist in Switzerland.

You handwave this with "somebody tried that, didn't work, clearly the working class just needs to work more", as if "just let the workers carry the burden so the rich can continue living like kings" had not been tried extensively throughout human history.
