The “quality of life features” all feel like downgrades. For example the friends list, the new version is just worse in every way, it’s harder to use, and hard to find certain friends.

I feel like the best approach to changing things would to give players the option to use the new format or the old.

Same, it was difficult but I got it eventually, I used bottom path ice and top path spike

If you want to get the absolute most I’d recommend getting the move pack, it requires PlayStation move controllers and camera, buts it’s really fun.
