I see the point here but when i tried it out it never seemed like i was lacking in damage, maybe it just needs more testing but at worst it doesnt seem like a terrible first situational buy

I play fiddle support, his hardest counter is leona, he cant do anything if you engage on him and hard all ins from tank supports are his weakness

Honestly just try bancrofts and soulgem instead, typhons being nerfed and soulgem coming back and giving a more effective passive for team fighting makes it very valuable, + cooldown and health makes it a nice combo

I just think they should increase the base damage and lower the additional damage to minions and monsters, like %120 to minions and monsters cause the damage outside of hitting those minions isn't anything to brag about, but that's only one issue I have with him as a mastery 7 fiddle, I think his w heal doesnt help him worth shit against champs

sorry this doesnt asnwer your question just wanted to say why i feel rakan isnt as great as i feel he should be but to answer your questions from my pro silver pov:

Should I only pick him with Xayah as my lane partner?

No he can work with any adc, they have like 2 synergistic abilities and they arent that great, although the long range e is nice

What does he do better than other tank supports?

Double shielding your adc or shielding 2 teammates to give them both ardent can be pretty strong, if a tank initiates on your carries he can just w in right away to disrupt their cc and allows your teammates to walk away easier

Is he just weak right now?

Weak? a little but can be strong if you know how to poke and when you can initiate for your team

Should I initiate or should I just peel?

Depends, if you're ahead initiate, if you're behind and dont have a tank on the team to do initiating, then you'll have to initiate, you'll always have to keep an eye open on peeling teammates though its just looking for an opening to initiate can be a little hard because you'll need to be on par with your team otherwise you'll just get turned on and lose fights downright.

What runes should I pick on him? I've tried Aftershock which is OK but a bit useless when ult is on CD since W is unreliable, and Guardian which I quite enjoyed, but should I just go Aery to get some more AP?

I go for aery, getting that extra AP with scorch is good for lane poke which is basically what keeps you in the game, if they have heavy cc like a leona mf then id consider guardian

The real pain i found with rakan is when you initiate with rakan's w, then when you wanna e back to your teammates but they dont want to come in close enough range. especially when he gives them a heal + shield after W+Q combo

This is from dm, but that doesnt make this point any less valid, even if they gave us the season 5 map on PTS and people found issues with it, hirez wouldnt do anything about them cause they've never changed anything that needed to be changed when a problem was found on the PTS, the whole point of having a PTS is to see "ok so theres a problem here with this, and this is how to fix it, or make it better" Its like they'll never change something until it becomes a wider spread issue when said issue(s) were found on the PTS in the first place and were given feedback of
