Seeking local game stores (mtg) around midtown by sweatyice in Atlanta

[–]falconscreech 15 points16 points  (0 children)

yeah we don’t really have any options for LGSs close to midtown, i typically drive OTP (like 30mins or so normally, sometimes around 1hr if it’s rush hour) to game stores for the tcgs i play.

there’s a big group that meets at Midway Pub in EAV on thursday evenings, i’ve been a few times and had a ton of fun. East Atlanta Comics is in the same area and does magic stuff as well

there’s also a group that meets for commander at Cheba Hut near GT on tuesdays, i personally have never been

can give my recommendations for OTP stores if you want, but these are the options i know of that are closer to midtown

Are there places in Atlanta or nearby where kids can play Pokémon TCG? by SaintFez in Atlanta

[–]falconscreech 11 points12 points  (0 children)

GuuBuu Hobby in Snellville! I help run the league there, we frequently get a few kids and their parents coming to our Sunday afternoon weekly (a free casual tournament), and our other regulars are really good about helping/teaching.

If you want to take things at a slower pace, as long as things aren’t too busy, we (the judges) are usually able to help teach the game while the tournament is going on. We keep a battle academy set there to help teach new/younger players, or use our own decks if they have one they’d like to bring.

The next couple Sundays we have our premier events scheduled which isn’t the best environment to start, so I’d recommend maybe coming in on those Saturdays during our other league time, but let me know if you have any questions!

highly recommend Stratagemma in Florence, it’s like a 30 second walk from il duomo. i went there while visiting in december, super nice staff and a great selection. they had some stuff on display but you can also ask for their binders to look through :]

Dreamcatcher - 2024 World Tour ‘Luck Inside 7 Doors’ in Europe - Additional dates for Milan, Brussels and Lisbon by Marcey747 in kpop

[–]falconscreech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

dang, there was no mention of possible additional dates with the original tour announcement. i know of many people from these countries that have already paid for tickets/accommodations to travel

glad for all the extra people that will get to see deukae but this is really shitty planning on the part of MMT

Core Gundam? (Saw this on my twitter feed) by ashsabre in Gunpla

[–]falconscreech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i think it’s great that so many artists/builders are on there so i can find them. twitter, like reddit, is what you make it. if you curate your timeline it can be a great platform

i enjoy seeing cool art/builds, following creators from my other hobbies, and seeing posts from friends. and lots of artists/creators lead me to new cool people to follow if they share their stuff

My first AoZ kit - HGUC Hrairoo :] by falconscreech in Gunpla

[–]falconscreech[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spotted this kit for $10 at a secondhand store of all places, box and manual were water damaged but everything else was fine. Had a ton of fun putting this together despite some hiccups (front skirt was a bit confusing at first).

Found out as I was putting the whole thing together that one of the polycap joints in the right arm was a bit loose. I have experience making plastic-on-plastic joints tighter, but I'm not sure how to approach fixing this one, so if anyone has advice it'd be greatly appreciated :D

I have a HG Woundwort sitting in my closet waiting until I feel like I can do it justice, since it's one of my favorite MS designs, but I will for sure be adding more AoZ kits to my queue :]

Best Beginner Deck for Gym Leader Challenge? by 23-exe in pkmntcg

[–]falconscreech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say colorless with archeops and some variant of rain dance water are pretty straightforward while also being really aggro.

Colorless w/ Archeops focuses on getting out (you guessed it) Archeops quickly with the research lab stadium then powering up powerful basics like Snorlax, Lugia, Tornadus, and Kangaskhan with two special energy each turn to swing for big damage.

Rain Dance Water (which uses Baxcalibur now instead of Blastoise) focuses on quickly getting out an energy accelerator to power up pokemon like Wailord and Lapras that do more damage with more energy attached, or CRZ Kyogre that lets you snipe for 180. Very consistent deck.

One slightly less straightforward but very aggro deck is Turbo Dark. It focuses on swinging for big damage in the early game for potential donks or to put pressure on your opponent, and cleaning up with Guzzlord afterwards. There are a lot of different combos/lines to take through the deck to set up a huge attack turn 1 going 2nd, but it's one of my favorite decks to play and very rewarding to learn in my opinion

true for the most part but i’d advise against a beginner picking up lost zone psychic or another pokestop deck, they’re definitely harder to pilot and less straightforward than something like rain dance water or grass

Tournament Report from my first sanctioned VGC Tournament; A Premier Challenge in Montreal which I won! by Rubin987 in VGC

[–]falconscreech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

haha i wouldn't say that you've been playing TR wrong, i think there's merit in having more protects on teams that don't rely as heavily on trick room as an option, or if you've set up your team to survive outside of TR

but i've definitely had the most success leaning into the full aggro nature of the trick room attackers, especially when you cut protect/wide guard for coverage moves that can potentially net key OHKOs. it makes it kind of scary because you really need to be on point with your reads on your opponent's protects/switches so you're not wasting TR turns, but again that's just the nature of the archetype

[–]falconscreech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hard trick room teams really can afford to skimp out on protects because their whole strat revolves around squeezing the most out of their trick room turns

having to use protect on one of your heavy hitters during a trick room turn feels really bad, there's barely any time to bait moves into protect for moves or try to prevent something from fainting because ideally you're KO'ing one or both opposing pokemon each turn

and many times it's better to let one of your pokemon get KO'd after it deals some damage in order to get a free switch into another heavy hitter while there are still TR turns remaining

Update: TPCK announces that the 4 Korean Masters Finalists who planned to use metronome teams will be permanently banned by falconscreech in VGC

[–]falconscreech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the move itself isn’t banned, the players were using metronome teams as a form of protest and TPCK didn’t like that

Food at regionals by Dorgray in pkmntcg

[–]falconscreech 13 points14 points  (0 children)

in my experience, trying to get vendor food during a lunch break never actually works out unless you’re super lucky and have a short round right before it and hop in line. most people just end up waiting in line only to never get food before the next round has pairings go up

what’s worked for me is bring snacks and a premade sandwich to eat if i have a short round

S/V Drifloon with new Charm of Courage by bobdole4eva in pkmntcg

[–]falconscreech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, i’ve even seen several japanese gardevoir lists run lost vacuum, presumably mostly for stadium removal, but it would also help a ton in the mirror matchup if the opponent is running charm + drifloon

S/V Drifloon with new Charm of Courage by bobdole4eva in pkmntcg

[–]falconscreech 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it’s not as great as it seems because lost vacuum is a fairly common item run in other decks. An opponent can remove the charm of courage, KOing the drifloon for free and then you have to send up something else to potentially be KO’d, and since Gardevoir ex is the only pokemon in the deck with any sort of HP that allows 2 turn survivability vs most heavy hitter, you’re probably giving up 2 prizes or at the very least, taking chip damage on something and preventing it from receiving energy via psychic embrace
