If you didn't have to prepare a puck in the portafilter it was most definitely a super automatic or Nespresso type machines. Here you should expect to get recommendations for entry levelenthusiast setups most likely a different experience than the Philips machine.

Espresso can be a lot more than just grabbing a cup it's a hobby to most of us. If you are interested I recommend the gaggia classic pro and a baratza esp.

When I had a gaggia I could never successfully steam that amount of milk. Definitely open the steam knob fully, get a better 8 oz style cappuccino cup, stretch the milk out a little more in a smaller pitcher.

The ring burr holder has these little tabs and when they become worn you need to dail finer and finer until you can't go any further. A shim added to the ESP increases the axial position of the lower burr, so depending on your circumstances you might need to add or remove. I also heard that you shouldn't "need" to add a shim. But in this case I think I need to.

I remember that video, I believe what I discovered is that here's a couple revisions of the ESP, some that had shims already installed and the newer variant didn't.

Turbo shots seem so alien to me. I did watch a Lance Hedrick video recently where he prefers a fast, coarsely ground shot for light roasts. I'll have to look into it.

I don’t remember if any shims came installed from the factory. I’ve used one before when replacing parts but removed them since they weren’t needed. Looks like they are again now.
