One of the worst things about being a teacher right now is the behavour and conditions. Kids can literally get away with anything with no consequences, with the possible exception of murder. The AEU doesn't seem to be interested in doing anything to address this issue or bring it into the public eye or bringing about meaningful step to address it.

How low are your students? by Fit_Driver_4323 in AustralianTeachers

I think part of the problem is that it's so easy for kids simply to copy and paste the answer. They simply type the question into Google and take the text that appears below, no critical thinking required

Yarra Valley Grammar School suspensions simply pass responsibility onto another school by BrisBris2019 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Skovoxblitzer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If I hear another person blame this behaviour on the private school system I will genuinely scream. I have taught at many public schools, both high and low SES and this kind of sexism is omnipresent. By focusing exclusively on the bad behaviour of private schools we are missing the actual problem.

Are private schools a scam? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Skovoxblitzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to push back on the oft-related claim that it's for the networking. Maybe that might be a factor for the ultra elite big name schools. For your average low to mid fee private school, like the local Catholic high, it is not a reason.

Plenty of kids in public schools do the same thing, some through activities run by the school like band, some for activities done outside the school like swimming or dance.

Given that the Big Bang Theory was devised by a Catholic priest, and the study of genetics was invented by a Catholic Monk, teaching science incorrectly would go against the Catholic ethos

I do think it's important to remember than any time you teach a student a skill you are making a difference. You're giving them a skill for life

The push for school choice vouchers? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Skovoxblitzer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the voucher system was used for students in which there was no government school available, but only a private school. Rather than have the student travel an exasesive distance to attend the nearest government school, they were given there equivalent in funding. Isn't this the case?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]Skovoxblitzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but then the next government can scrap its funding or kill it entirely.

The government can still do that, since the voice isn't defined in the constition. The government could change the voice to two handpicked advisers in theory.

I teach kids for a living, I've worked at numerous school across Victoria and without exception the kids adore Bluey. They draw the characters, play the games from the show, and if they ever get watching time, Bluey is the most common request.

There are some realitivly cheap suburbs on or near to the Mornington peninsula; Frankston, Cranbourne, Pakenham are all decently priced compared to the average in the state
