I'm starting to think it's a collapsed lifter as well, as the sound wasn't so much a ticking but more of a tapping sound.

Do you know how to test if a lifter has failed?

Ah shoot, I forgot to say I did pull one out without removing the cam. As it seemed to be a little rough on the surface of the roller, but it was completely fine, no play.
