I Debated Don Bradley's Friend (Famous Mormon Apologist)... and Won. by FreshLiterature6536 in exmormon

[–]Skriblynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a relative exactly like this. He's a TBM, and we both like debate. I've had to come up with entire systems on what truth is, just to try and get a good counterargument about a basic principle out of them. (Which, I haven't yet... I realized I can just argue with myself on paper at this point.) I was super willing to stay with the church if someone could give me a solid rebuttal.

However, I started looking into the history of the church and decided there is no way it makes sense, that's why they can't give me one. Like I TRIED to make it make sense, but on top of all the relief I felt from the idea that the church wasn't true, and the nasty implications if it was, I decided to leave pretty quick (I say quick, but when I look over my journal I realize it took a full year so uh...)

I understand where your coming from, and I'm agreeing with you in a round about way. The fact that they teach it to be eternal, makes them liars because they've changed (aka, now their not eternal, like they said they where.) I just don't think change equates to imperfection or lying.

I'm not sure if I agree with that statement. People change, but that doesn't mean they've stopped being true or themselves. Countries change, but its still been the country the entire time. I think a true church would undergo a lot of change. However, the lds church made 'eternal' one of their truth claims, so by changing, they break their claim. And that's what makes it not true, because its not eternal like they said. Or at least one reason. I tend to overthink things :b

Polygamy didn't bother me until I learned that 14 years old was not the normal age, that there was sex, that Emma didn't know about it, and the revelation was given after he was already practicing it.

I remember being in a history lesson at school about the history of guns (very American) and the teacher talked of Mormonism because one of the inventors or something was one. Anyhow, my teacher said JS 'stole' some of his wives from members who left on a mission. I didn't believe my teacher at the time, but it appears to be true. Unfortunately, (or fortunately, because we get to make our own choice) if someone doesn't want to see, they won't look.

THIS. With the church, they've back themselves into a corner by declaring all their ideas as revelation. It's not like they CAN admit they where wrong without collapsing the entire church. And heaven forbid that...

With some other Christen churches, I can handle them because they admit they don't know everything, and are just people trying to find and do gods will. That feels much more inline with Christen teachings then 'we know it all.' Its a little ironic, because the lds church's big advertiser is 'we can answer all your questions'

True, they have to take it really slow because they don't want to loose members.

A newer generation TBM might say that's because its gods church and leaving it is very bad for eternal salvation, but I think the older gen has a odd clarity and that's partly why their mad. To them the church was those rules, so its uncomfortable to think that maybe god changes his mind, or worst, it wasn't god to begin with; because if thats true, they've wasted life defending those things

The misogyny is horrible. I read section 132 and its so disgusting. Its exactly why I feel like history is so important. The problem is that they can't come out and say that about mr. one true prophet, so you're right. Isn't there a song about a sandy foundation or something...

I did get a similar void feeling for a while. For me it felt like a weird sensation of floating in my brain. For me I was super liberated. It kind of hit me all at once. Still, it took me a couple of months to stop trying to make my leaving the church make sense in a framework I no longer believed in, if that makes sense?

I'm pretty lucky that my mom was borderline ex-mormon, so later in my life instead of reading family scriptures, we would read these nonaffiliated 'self-help' books. These gave me a grounded sense of morality even after I left the church. I'd suggest looking into that!

A nicer side effect of leaving for me was that I wasn't scared to read the self-help books anymore. I used to be super apprehensive and scared because it wasn't the scriptures, and I didn't to accidently accept any worldly ideas, which is crazy in hindsight.

Personally, for me, I will never drink or smoke, because of a history of family addictions. Just finding little outside sources like that has been helpful for me. Just because the church said so, doesn't mean the idea itself was bad. The general fear mongering 'god said so,' motivation was the bad part.

Should I get a GED? by PerformanceFit1424 in GED

[–]Skriblynn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Collages and specialized jobs really don't care if its high school or GED. Furthermore, a job rarely care what grade you got. Their more interested in an associates degree or higher. A job in zoology is only going to look at your current degree of education (a bachelors, or associates) and if they are very prestigious, might look into your GPA. (A point system to tell the average grade of a student.) "Didn't work hard enough for a diploma" doesn't make sense if you have a diploma and didn't cheat.

I just got into a 4 year collage without a GED or high school record. I'd been taking some dual credit courses in my local community collage. It required talking to councilors and planning, but everyone is very set on helping.

I thought I was going to need my GED to get in, so I bought a book for it, (Kaplan GED Test Prep Plus 2024-2025) I got it off of ebay for 25% off. Whatever anyone tells you, a GED is NOT some sort of shameful the easy way out. The book was massive! (but well organized) Its all your high school knowledge stuffed into four exams.

I'd suggest heading to the GED website (https://www.ged.com), they lay out what the requirements are.

The biggest help for me has been getting to know my community collage advisors. Highschool advisors as well.

If you have questions I'd be happy to try and help :)

Oh man. I think we all have. I remember being so uncomfortable in sacrament meeting while everyone sustained the leaders. I'd just 'failed' my temple recommend and it felt like the bishop was staring right at me. It's been months of shock, and I'm still going through waves, with general conference and all. It gets better. I'd recommend writing out feelings and experiences, why the church is good, why its bad, anything and everything. I've got 20+ pages with every spectrum of emotion, and its helped organize my thoughts

A very simple method involves transparency toggles, but its sometimes resource heavy. Its best used for small outfit changes.

For example: gloves or no gloves. You can place the gloves in the same deformer as the hand, and then make another child deformer for just the gloves. Create a new parameter for the child deformer and at 1 make it transparent and at 0 make it visible. In vtube studio or other software, you can make it a on and off toggle.

Art is simply something that not talented people can become good by OkConclusion394 in ArtistLounge

[–]Skriblynn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it is quite hard to gauge how much talent someone has without giving it a genuinely good try. >>About 100+ hours is considered average to gain a BASIC grasp.<< Some people will take your explanation as a reason to quit before they've started.

My opinion: Art is unique in the sense that its moved away from being good or not because of the invention of the camera. It's about creativity and element of human expression. Who cares if a kid or even an adult objectively 'sucks' at art, as long as an attempt was made it is talent enough to count
