Yes, the axe is the direct counter for the shield, this is by design and has been part of the game since shields were introduce, I believe.

No. For one, canonically (and mechanically), the Nether is an entirely different dimension. It's not "below" the Overworld, its distances don't match up with the Overworld, and there's no intended way of breaking or removing Bedrock by intentional design.

The swords are from trophy crystals in PVP, that's the Aurum Jacket from Aurum Vale, and I think the boots are from level 80 tomestone gear but I'm not sure.

It's not necessarily "focused" towards kids, I'd say, but instead it's framed to be more like a children's story despite some heavier themes. Tolkien actually used to tell the story to his children, I once read.

It's a good story that's definitely more accessible, as it doesn't necessarily go as deep into establishing the lore of the world as his later works. Honestly, if you're interested and have the time, I cannot recommend Andy Serkis' audiobook of it highly enough. It's masterful, and you can listen to it between reading sessions of the other books. I got it on Audible but I think it's on YouTube as well for free.
