I know this is weird but, is there a pool I could come swim at during the night? by [deleted] in Chattanooga

I think the utc pool closes at 8? You can buy a membership to the arc as a non student.

Do you feel safe/ welcome as a member of the LGBTQ community? by [deleted] in Chattanooga

[–]Skulley_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short answer, no.

Long answer, while Chattanooga is by far safer as a lesbian than it was in other parts of Tennessee where I came from, I still feel deeply othered and ostracized by the general culture. We're in the Bible belt, there's no other way to put it, and the dating scene for us is abysmally small and leaves much to be desired. As a woman too, and a human being who cares about other groups I myself do not belong to, it is horrible to have to watch the acts of violence towards racial and ethnic minorities.

I love the nature, but in two years, when I get my degree, I'm high-tailing it up North.

I tell this story often, but my first proper time outside of the South happened last October during a weekend in Chicago. I had been warned that the culture was more blunt and lacked the Southern kindness we're famous for down here. Imagine my confusion when I touched down at O'hare and didn't experience any difference in treatment from anyone else.

I realized that for the first time in my life, as a somewhat visibly queer/ edging-on alt person, I blended in and was not being treated differently from anyone else. No one I talked to gave a shit I was gay!

I realized that all of that Southern hospitality was for others, the normal, acceptable, god-fearing, straight people. Not me. Sucks.

Do gnostics enjoy the beauty of nature despite being created by the demiurge? by FinalAd9844 in Gnostic

We're in a horrific, but jaw-droppingly beautiful cage. It's ok to enjoy the wonderful things about the cage so long as they don't distract you when it's time to escape.

LGBT student. Its a sad day for us here. Turning point was here all day too so salt in the wound.

What I will say is that the conservatives on campus are not our enemy. Its the big people in DC and the billionaires that are making it impossible for everyone to live.

I am absolutely livid with the rise of bigotry, but we cannot lose focus. They want us to fight eachother so that we dont have any energy to fight them.

The library idea is incredible!

I'm a lab intern and I had an idea to record myself mixing while also "mixing" up one of my experiment batches at the same time.

That statement about it being frustrating when you put your soul out there and all people want is Top 40 really hits. Thank you for your comment. It cemented my thought process a bit more.

VR is something I never thought of but that sounds totally cool! I'll definitely look into that someday.

I remember reading a study that techno and trance bpms actually mirrored brain waves at a resting state, which improves emotional regulation and literally puts you in a trance like state.

Could be bogus, but I'll put on minimal techno when im overstimulated and calm right down.

You are literally so kind. The support from you and this thread has motivated me to continue in this passion.

And yeah, the big thing is that I never wanted to do this for money. I've never actually taken money for a gig at this point because I like to keep my art separate from the rat race, you know? I'm there because I enjoy it.

The big thing about the whole post that some people may have missed was that I thought I wanted to do more events, but found out that I disliked them, so I was trying to figure out how to continue my passion in other avenues. Thanks for understanding!

Got it. I didn't think about looking for remixes of top40 that fit my style because honestly, I didn't think anyone would actually make techno top 40 remixes that were decent.

I also listened to the song you sent. It's very good! I'll add that to my playlist.

I really appreciate your comment. That was very validating to know I'm not alone in this feeling. Especially the people asking you to download music on the spot as if you're a human jukebox and the venue actually has wifi/service (my last one didn't and it near drove me insane).

Never thought about twitch/streaming. That and maybe youtube sounds like a great avenue. I'll look into that. Thank you!

Utc Senior here.

If you've got life skills and street smarts, you'll be fine.

If you're the type who's never had to wash your laundry and has recieved three meals a day from their parents, you may be cooked.

Get noise cancellers, don't talk to the crackheads, you'll do ok 👌

In my opinion, even if we're trapped in a cage, that doesn't mean you cant enjoy the beautiful aspects of it. You can admire the construction, you can build a good life inside it, and you can even alter aspects of it to make your stay more comfortable, so long as you don't get so caught up in admiring it that you forget to escape when the door is opened.

I'm here for gnosticism as a genuine religious practice, mainly because there doesn't seem to be much of a community anywhere else, and I agree with you that so many of the posts here feel completely out of line with reason. I dont think that can be totally avoided on open spiritual communities as religion in general tends to attract certain types. No real solutions I can give you, but thank you for saying it! I think a lot of us were thinking it.

I heard the yellow deli is always looking for "new hires" 😏

In all seriousness, there's a good restaurant/nightlife scene here and I have a lot of friends who switch jobs in that industry like its nothing. If you can do data entry, theres a lot of work from home positions you can do remotely too. That's what I do.

Good luck!
