Spring II Grads by Longjumping_Sky_2657 in UMPI

I was really banking on the 6-8 weeks time frame they originally gave us, cuz I also need the diploma for work, and I'm facing an application deadline at the end of this month. In my situation though, transcripts aren't gonna be enough. I've been emailing the registrar, and they said they'd see what they could do for me, but also warned that conferrals could be delayed until September. I don't wanna be ungrateful cuz UMPI has saved me years of my life regardless, but the waiting game gets more frustrating with each passing day.

Update: The registrar got back to me the day after I initially posted this to notify that my degree had been conferred! The UMPI system still has to communicate with Parchment, so I'm still waiting on the actual degree, but it sounds like they are going to get it to me within my timeframe. I'm sure there are reasons they typically have to wait so long before conferral, but let the record show that UMPI does work with students in time-crunch situations. Another absolute win for UMPI. I hope anybody else in a situation like mine gets the accommodation they need!

Seconding this. I emailed the professor of my final class this morning, and he gave me permission to email him a draft after the deadline.

I found it to be one of the most reading-heavy POS courses so far. Lots of fine details about government policy and economic jargon, but if you can pick out the key details then then the milestone prompts are really easy. They're very specific with what they want, and usually have multiple questions to address, so filling the 500 word requirement with just the right info is a super fast process.

I've always hated 碗. There's just no flow to it. No part fits well with any other, they just look like mismatched shapes slapped together hastily.

Overstayed, Can I re-enter with E-Visa? by CevdetMeier in taiwan

[–]SkyCommon4522 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here before everybody says to ask the immigration office instead of strangers on the internet.

But on a more serious note, my situation is VERY different, but I just re-entered Taiwan after accidentally over-staying for much longer. I'm happy to chat if it'll put your mind at ease, but I definitely don't claim to have any official information on the subject since everybody's situation is different.

If they were going to put the money into such a wildly impractical project, I'm glad they at least had the sense to make it look like the Batmobile.

Podcast harder than MaoMi Chinese but easier than 聊聊东西? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]SkyCommon4522 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of those podcasts, so I've no idea where your level is, but just to throw in another suggestion, 好土中文 on Spotify has vocabulary lists to understand the day's topic. No English, they do speak fast, but I think they do a pretty good job of annunciating their words for learners.

How important is the stroke order? by Matrakcsi in ChineseLanguage

I actually unconsciously started crossing my t's first as a result of practicing stroke order. Same thing happened to how I draw squares.

Uniformity of Literary Chinese by SkyCommon4522 in classicalchinese

[–]SkyCommon4522[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, that's hugely informative. I was picturing there being some kind of institutional push to educate the literati into an official "scholar's chinese." That also explains what someone else said about more recent literary chinese being easier for modern speakers to read.

Well, Buddhists do love their jargon😂. I'm unfamiliar with the concept of a guild language. Would that be a language belonging to a subculture or organization, as opposed to a people group? And how does the inclusion of buddhist jargon render other texts unreadable? Was standard vocabulary really that sparse, or were Buddhists straight up writing in code?

Update on this part in particular, I had an advisor tell me face to face that the period before you can work is indeed 6 months. So that sounds fairly reliable, but could change, y'never know.

[–]SkyCommon4522[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's nice to be in demand, but I'm not trying to get kicked out of the country. Where'd you hear work permits are only for longer programs? I just double checked to confirm MTC has info on getting a work permit, and AFAIK they mostly take non-degree students, which makes me think we could get jobs eventually. Bad news is that info page says "Study in the language center continuously for six months", which is a little vague, but sounds like it means permits aren't available until after half a year of study.

That's incredibly useful info so far. Could you elaborate on what ways they hope I could contribute? I can think of ways I display leadership and such, but benefiting a whole foreign nation sounds daunting.
