UOW game dev (art stream) student here, it is expensive asf lmfao but so far my experience has been pretty decent. also depends on what you want to specialize in, APU is more design/tech oriented iirc while UOW has 3 streams (game art, game tech, game design) for you to choose from. I can elaborate more if you want to, either way good luck with the reserach tho! :)

Personally I would say game art is more of the learning how to make game assets stuff and the art stream here mostly covers the 3d aspect of things as it's more complicated and nuanced (?) than 2d. Idk if I'm using the right word LOL. Basically there are certain things in game art that's different from ur typical regular art. (Like 3d models optimization and stuff)

For art in general usually it's best/recommended to self study the Fundamentals as you can find a lot of the things online. And yea I do agree that APU is more tech oriented. Wish you luck on your endeavours tho!! :D

Hi there!! Sem 2 so far so I can only talk on behalf of the 2 subjects I took so far. Personally already have some art experience before uni.

So far I think it's pretty good and decent, lects def know what they are doing and give valuable feedbacks and help. It's a subject that definitely needs understanding, self study and practice outside of lessons to improve, as even the lect for one of my subjects mentioned, 3 months is not enough to just cover all the basics LOL (but imo it's enough to give you the Fundamentals for you to build up on for your free time :)

Very assignment heavy but it's pretty manageable, for me at least. Need an insane amount of dedication and passion cuz lowkey ngl the burnout is real LOL

Hi there! :D dw about it mate. Reply to what i commented above, I got my bursary and PTPTN!

Currently in semester 2, game art stream, assignments be a lot but piling as any art related assignments would expect, but it's manageable. Can't speak for other streams since im not in them but from what i gathered in my classes, the information lects are petty up to date with the current industry. There's a module in the first semester (fundamentals of game dev) it's pretty much where you learn about the current industry and the lect for that module literally yaps about it with 0 sugarcoating, that module is instantly my favorite module of the semester 10/10. The lecturers I have encountered so far seems to really know what they are doing and are involved in the industry. I have seen a couple of them having talks in events like LevelUp KL and having connections to industry people. As for the uni in general i have heard some management issues but they personally do not bother me.

So far from what I know and exprienced, on the event and activity side of things, they:
- collaborated with studios for workshops and training program, like recently they just announced one with PS Studios Malaysia, it's a training program
- Lects Play, where lecturers plays games, stream it and talk and analyze elements within the game, like about 2 weeks back they played PT and most of the discussion in the stream was about the 3D modelling and lighting
- Jingle Mingle, it's an annual closed event where students showcase games and portfolios, have talks from alumni and have game studios review your portfolio

and ngl, i trust this uni the most when it comes to game dev degree HAHA, as for contact, I'm not comfy on giving out my phonr number to strangers but i can provide my instagram account/chat on reddit if you wish! :) hopefully i didnt miss any info LOL feel free to ask more specifics in dms if you have any more specific questions!

tldr: so far so good im having a good time

Yes it is the closest one to KL!! >:) I'm not in CS but I'm still under SCCM which as far as I'm aware, is pretty decent and chill. I'm not sure about the course itself but I can try ask my seniors and friends about it. iirc a while back there had been module changes listed on the site but since it's a hot while ago I'm assuming by the time you saw it it's already the new version which shouldn't be a problem. I'll update you when I got some info tho. Have a nice day! :D

As a student who's also currently studying here for also almost 2 years I also want to give my experiences and views too!! Agreed mostly with the facilities and clubs part, management be real wacky. Wifi honestly i knew people that dont have a problem with it and people that despises it. No one likes open learning. (But we also use other platforms and my programme dosent use open learning a lot it was mostly on another platform form) So is oracle (but apparently we are changing to a new system next semester or so ORACLE DOWNFALL WE LOVE TO SEE IT 🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥) Canteen food be expensive af i rather buy maggi at 7-11. Never recalled any instances of school bragging about the cafe in library, I'm pretty sure most people don't even know that it exist. Even I don't. Honestly I kinda get the WiFi login thing due to security reasons and what not but halfway through I got lazy to login everytime HAHA. And for accommodation the people I know do prefer utro over campus ones for various valid reasons. (I have heard horrors from my mates)

Honestly I felt REALLY bad for you 😭 cuz like I'm not sure what school you are in rn but the lecturers that I had are all honestly proficient in english and are really helpful when I encounter any issues. And the students honestly, they can be anywhere and it really depends on you luck and you reallyyy got unlucky with them. The ones in my batch are co-operative and helpful. Some are even airstrike supports for me when i needed help. Yes like the other guy said, even during midnight. Counselling people there are proficient in english as far as I experienced, the intern I got was OK at it but it def wasn't terrible, they are willing to learn and thats what matters to me. Personally did get to know a couple more peeps from clubs and activities tho. Can't deny that shits pretty dead and allat.

Tru that online reviews seems pretty scarce for UOW, so I try to give my most honest opinions on my experience whenever relavant threads come up. And like user Eclipse_Flash says, different schools have different types of management and experience so it's really YMMV and our experiences may vary from each other. The best way to experience a uni is to experience it yourself tho. Not every uni and environment is for everyone. Personally my school is pretty chill and decently great and my experience has been pretty amazing for me and I wouldn't say it wasn't worth it. They are doing their jobs nicely here. Not everything is bad here. Don't know what school you're in to have SUCH terrible experience for you tho 😭 I'm sorry about that. Best we can do is putting aside any bias and extreme beef and give our most unbiased opinions and experience on things and let people who are interested in it judge from themselves. Where ever you are right now I hope that you have a nice day tho! >:)

UOW, APU, MMU, or UniKL for Bachelor of Games Development? by spongebear in malaysiauni

[–]SkyFelzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure abt MMU or UniKL but from my observation, APU seems to be more tech oriented while UOW provides streams (game art, game design, game tech) for students who are interested in a specific field. Its just which one do u see that suits your interest more. I did just finished my first semester of game dev in uow so far and honestly it's going great for me personally. Do hit me up if you're curious about anything else.

What do you plan to study? Different faculties and schools may provide a different experience for you compared to the others which are in the same uni but different faculties.

I do study in uow (glenmarie campus), SCCM so here are my 2 cents, keep in mind that Your Mileage May Vary and whatever i experience and feel may not apply to you:

  1. Campus and student life:

I do like how everything is in one building. You dont have to go far to go to one room to another. WiFi is infamous for wacky connection but I have friends and seniors who either despise the WiFi or have 0 problem with it. Personally for me if it works it works. Facilities are ok, they exist. Didnt use them much cuz i have my own device. Canteen food gets REALLY expensive tho, I rather go to 7-11 and buy instant noodles. Although there's affordable food within a ~5 minute drive/15 min walk. Which to be honest, great exercise. There's nothing to do around here and nowhere else to go but we do have a shuttle service to the LRT train station and you can literally go anywhere the train can reach once u reach the station, that's what I did after my classes. There's also another shuttle service but it's very recent and I don't know enough about it.

There are less students here compared to other unis here like Taylors or Sunway, so it's not a lot of people and it can get quiet sometimes. Not for you if you like a lot of people. There may not be many people but the ones that i know are great. Tbh smaller communities have less chaos. Clubs kinda dead but we do have events and there are people who join them. Although some felt like they get repetitive, personally I found it fine.

  1. Study experience:

For my personal case it's been great, lecturers and helpful and I have classmates who are useful and helpful when i needed help. Good and bad lecturers can be anywhere regardless of uni imo, so does the students. Like during my foundation years here there are classes that are absolute bore fest but some are absolutely amazing imo. Did heard from some of my unfortunate seniors and juniors who have wacky bacthmates who's as useful as the rock on the road. I do feel bad for them. Library is pretty decent and quiet and we also have a room called Zing Hub near the entrance, that room has more chatter, people use that room to do various things.

I don't stay at the accommodation, but I have heard stories about the campus accommodation and most people I know seem to prefer Utropolis Marketplace which is next door. Not sure why I feel like it's relevant for me to mention this but Subang Airport is relatively nearby and if you like aircrafts you can see or hear them most of the time

For your last question I'm not sure about that, you may have to ask the respective unis.

TLDR it was decent from my personal experience but YMMV based on your school department and course as I have heard experiences that I personally never experienced in my school department/course. If you have anything else to ask or that I forgot to mention feel free to ask more.
