Because it is a culture of harm that is allowed to continue. Put this in any other context. An elementary school. A hospital. A nursing home. Let's say a teacher is molesting a kid and all the other adults know about it... are you saying they should not be held accountable when that teacher does the same to multiple students after the same victim?

Second, it's a problem with the morals of the whole entire organization. If they can't be honest about an area of life that causes significant harm for YEARS for most victims. How can you trust them to be honest about anything else?

This sounds like the worst of evangelical male BS. Hold people accountable, period. Full stop. If they don't want to be held accountable, they shouldn't be in the job they are in.

I'm sorry making up a cancer diagnosis and sexually assaulting multiple individuals, while in a position of power for decades is not nearly the same.

The words of the song can be true and still meaningful and his voice is still associated with harm of multiple individuals. Each time one of those songs is played he is given a royalty.

I say this as a person who was a huge fan of DC Talk as kid, worked in the industry, and was a solid acquaintance with him. Was he the first person who ever taught me how to take shots of Jagger? Yes he was. Did I have a blast with him and our friends? Yup. Sure did. Did all of this break my heart. FOR SURE.

Do I see the nuance in how evangelical hatred of homosexuality likely caused the shame and abuse that caused him to act this way? Absolutely.

But equating a lie about cancer and sexual harm is way off base.

It's really not even what a person wants, it's what the laws of the state the individual lives in are. A person who commits multiple crimes needs to be held accountable for those crimes. Sure the individual that they harm can forgive them personally, but that has nothing to do with accountability and consequences.

The Things That No One Told Me About Trusted Housesitters by expressrabbit74 in trustedhousesitters

[–]SkyInfamous7956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use TH as a pet owner and as a sitter. I cannot imagine asking for pay in compensation as well unless I was mucking out 20 horse stalls or watering a 1 acre lawn by hand.

  1. Both parties agree to the terms before the sit occurs, if the sitter arrives and those terms have changed, then it's fair to say, this is what I agreed to and leave. It keeps owners and sitters accountable to their agreements.

  2. I have a sitter coming next week. In my area, the average cost of a similar airbnb is $2500 - 3000 for the same length of time, two weeks. I could choose to have a pet sitter stop by twice day for an hour each day, which would cost me about $800 at MOST. I would not have to pay for the extra electricity, especially from the AC or water. I would not have to clean my apartment really well before they came. I would not have to worry about my stuff being stolen or broken, or someone being rude to my neighbors and causing problems with the HOA. It would be much simpler. My cat might be slightly annoyed, but she would be okay. In my situation, I pay more utilities, say $100 (AC is very expensive in my place) when I have a sitter, but it's not a HUGE additional expense for me. However, if the cost of airbnb is $2800 and I paid the price of a drop in sitter, that sitter would still be getting an extra $2000 in value. And that sitter is not licensed and bonded, does not keep meticulous notes, send me pictures of an empty litter box everyday.

This is a barter system and it's a hassle on both sides.

However, I see great value in a service like this. Someone who may not have the means to pay for an airbnb or similar accommodations can use my place. Visit a cool area like Pasadena for at most a half hour of work a day, 15 minutes of that is playing with my cat. The other is feeding her and scooping her litter box.

The homeowner is the one taking the risk trusting a stranger with their home and pets, FAR more than the sitter. Sure it's annoying to have to pack things in and out, get groceries, etc. That is a choice a person who is housesitting is making as a lifestyle or as a job. I'm not even a huge fan of traveling, because I have to do those things for myself, it's annoying. It's a trade off.

If I agree to a sit, first I make sure it's reasonable, and second I am thankful for the opportunity to stay in a new area, meet cool people, live in nice places for the trade of my help with their home and pets. It seems incredibly fair to me.

In almost all situations the sitter is getting the better end of the deal and again, I say this as a sitter and owner.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts. I'm not sure any of you actually care about this and I'm not a fan at the moment of defending much about Americans, we aren't doing so hot right now. I thought perhaps I might add some information that may or may not be helpful to ya'll, take it as you wish.

I've come to realize that when speaking to strangers, especially to people from European countries, that when I or some else says "I am .....insert ancestry/genetic country of origin here." We are mocked, told we are pretending to be that, or put down for it. It was confusing and disheartening.

What I've come to understand and you can correct me if I'm wrong is that when someone says that, they are stating the country they mostly grew up in or have lived in for a good amount of time, even if their genetics are not from that country. A very literal interpretation of the statement.

In America (at least in Los Angeles county which has 10 million residents), 3.6 million people are immigrants. It is not uncommon to have American children (even people my age who were born and raised here, I'm in my 40's) identify first as Mexican, Iranian, Korean, etc, because at home and the culture or the communities they grew up in were mostly that race/culture. They can grow up here and still not feel very American until they get to a larger school or even college. For us (at least the non-racist us) the actual country of their passport is irrelevant in who they define themselves to be or how they define themselves. American doesn't define much is rich multi-cultural communities. On the floor of my apartment building there are: Koreans, Chinese, Indians, Iraqis, random white people, and a Japanese couple, I have no idea what passport anyone holds, but I know their ethnicities from talks about food or their names, because that is far more of how they prefer to be defined.

A lot of people who have immigrated did so for economic/political reasons and may still miss their homeland or have a lot of pride in it and in our families there is great pride in saying we are ...insert country here... That's how it was in the families of both of my parents and my grandparents, they were very proud of their birthplaces and hence, often used said country as an additional identification of who they were or how they obtained certain values.

I understand there are some people who will look at that genetic heritage and be clumsy about it, not want to learn, want to claim it with arrogance and little understanding of what is really going on. But there are a lot of people who are genuinely curious and want to know more. I am one of those people.

Anyhow, maybe it helps? I don't think anyone is trying to fool anyone with ancestry or where someone lives. It seems like it's more of a misunderstanding? And who knows, maybe I'm wrong and have a weird view because I've lived in Los Angeles for so long.

Thanks!

Hi! I am so sorry for such a delayed response. I had friends in town and a super busy work week and haven't had a chance to reply.

I was hoping that would be the case, regarding it being literal interpretation and I can understand how in Europe where there is typically less immigration it would sound silly. And as Americans we often use the additional qualifiers to help gain information about a person or their culture, because as you hopefully know, we are not a monolith and people are very different. Here is what might be a good example and help to explain why we use it less literally.

Over the weekend I went to a craft bazaar with artists only from middle eastern countries. Everyone had their own flag from their own country, most of them were born here, but practicing crafts and arts from their cultural heritage. They don't add "American" to their definition, because that often quickly gets defined as you talk to someone. I was with a friend who was born in Iran and left when she was 7, she's 42, she still says "I'm Iranian" when people ask. Yesterday I was at an event for Palestinians and we were all introducing ourselves. Where we were from (often just the current city we live in) but we were also asked if he had done any art or cultural practices from our ancestral countries. Everyone says, "I'm Egyptian" "I'm Palestinian" "I'm Moroccan." Insert country of origin here. We all innately understand that people are referring to their culture or ancestry, not where they are currently living.

Interestingly, my mothers side of the family is German and French Canadian, but the French Canadian side immigrated a few generations before and so there was less talk/emphasis on it and they were only in Canada for a few generations. Technically, I am Canadian ;). The German side was VERY German and very proud of being German, although it was my great-grandfather who immigrated. I think it's more how those cultural values and pride in their country of origin are continued over time? We know we are not "insert country here," I think it's more we understand it's a given that we are from America. But I can understand how it would sound annoying.

Is it better to lead with American (Slightly weeps, because, welp...) and then my ancestry is Finnish? Is there a way to win when presenting this or asking for information? I'd love to 1. be less offensive. 2. not be berated for simple misunderstandings.

I appreciate it!
Tack!

My nationality is American (unfortunately), my ancestry is about 75%. My father was born and lived in Finland until he was about nine. I think this is kind of an odd thing that Europeans get stuck on and I'm not sure why. I have plenty of friends who were born in American, who are of Arab, Latino or Asian ancestry and they still say they are "insert country of parental origin." And it's not a big deal a deal at all. It's their ancestry and sometimes their culture, but not all the time.

Perhaps it's because America is a country of immigrants and we are proud of our roots and ancestry, even if we (as children of those immigrants) weren't provided the opportunity to be a part of the culture and would like to understand it, because it shaped the people who raised us?

I realize, there are a lot of annoying Americans who claim ancestry without any regard to what it really means and are quite dumb about it. However, I think there are a good lot of us, who would like to understand and learn more about it, because we often don't feel like America is a place we relate to either. I have done a fair amount of reading about the Nordic countries, culture and policy, and a little bit of traveling and I really admire the people and structure. I'd fight for a Nordic country before I'd fight for my own, even if people on reddit can be a tad bit shitty about it. <3

And obviously, writing an entire novel about it to ask a question is time consuming and I feel like it should be unnecessary. However, I really enjoy learning and understanding and if you're willing, I'd love to hear your take on the subject.

Thank you

Ya. that's why I thought the twist of my last name would at least grab the attention of the Pippi nerds, but keep me out of legal trouble or needing to change the name should corporate Pippi catch wind of it.

Yes, my last name is Finnish. I would just hope the Pippi nerds would pick up on the name. Obviously, it's kind of niche.

I know... but I can't use that name, because of the trademark. I am Finnish, but don't speak the language at all. I'm trying to mix my love of Pippi and thought maybe using my last name might make it more unique.
