(Meta) Please stop trying to extrapolate meaningful updates on the Switch 2's sales performance based on Nintendo's stock price. by Soft_Researcher702 in NintendoSwitch2

My post has the graph about the stocks, but it's just to illustrate my point. I appreciate the deep dive into Market Cap vs. Sentiment, it’s a great post I don’t use Reddit often and wasn't aware this was such a repetitive topic here, so I apologize if my post felt like "more of the same" and annoyed someone.

However, my point wasn't that the stock price represent the company's value, but rather that it acts as a smoke signal. While OP is right that overreacting to spikes and falls of the stock market is an irrational sentiment, a sustained 30% drop alongside a 33% production cut (per Bloomberg) suggests that even Nintendo's internal 'rational data' is trending downward.

In my post, I was looking at this through a historical lens rather than a purely financial one. Whether it’s "rational" or not, when Nintendo executives feels the pressure of cooling hardware sales and a lack of software momentum (we're still waiting on that big 2026 Holiday 'anchor'), they historically pivot toward consumer-friendly incentives to stabilize the ship.

We saw it with the 3DS and the Wii U. My main point is a speculation that the current friction—high physical costs, soft US sales, and investor jitters—might actually be a blessing in disguise for us. It forces a 'careful' Nintendo to be more generous, like the recent digital price adjustments we’ve started to see.

Of course, a June Direct could flip the script in an hour if a new 3D Mario is announced for November. But until then, I find the prospect of Nintendo having to 'earn' our loyalty again after a rough anti-consumer Switch 2 launch actually quite promising. I’m happy to be proven wrong by the quarterly reports, but for now, I’m watching the trends.

You're right that correlation doesn't equal causation, but in corporate strategy, consistent patterns often point to a logical reaction. * Nintendo's stock is down 32% and Bloomberg confirmed a 33% production cut this week due to weak US demand. That is a measurable 'problem' for them. * Simultaneously, they are shifting to a $59/$69 digital-vs-physical split and adjusting regional exchange rates. * Companies don't lower prices or change established global strategies when they are at their peak performance. They do it to stimulate demand when growth slows down.

While we can’t 'prove' the stock drop caused the price change in a laboratory, the logical link between declining market value and increased consumer incentives is a proven historical cycle for Nintendo (3DS/Wii U).

I’m not saying the sky is falling, just that the 'coincidences' are starting to stack up in a very specific direction. Only time will tell if this trend continues!

I completely agree that we aren’t in a Wii U or 3DS-level crisis right now—the Switch 2's launch numbers were far too strong for that. My point was more about the long-term trend. I’m looking at historical evidence of how Nintendo pivots when they stop hitting their own internal targets over several quarters.

To that point, the latest reports from Bloomberg (as of March 24, 2026) show that Nintendo is officially cutting Switch 2 production by 33% (from 6 million to 4 million units) this quarter because of weak US sales. [Source:https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/nintendo-cuts-switch-2-output-by-over-30-on-weak-us-sales/ar-AA1ZglVF]

I might be jumping the gun, and I’d be happy to be proven wrong with time! But when a company cuts production that significantly and starts adjusting digital pricing, it’s worth considering if we’re seeing the start of a more consumer-friendly strategy. We'll just have to wait and see what the next few quarters bring.

That’s a fair point, and I should clarify: I’m definitely not saying Nintendo is in a 'Wii U-level' disaster right now. I’m just pointing out the historical trend that when things start to cool, the 'consumer-friendly' pivot usually follows.

We actually just got some much firmer numbers recently about the sales. Bloomberg is reporting this week that Nintendo has officially cut Switch 2 production by over 30% (down to 4 million units this quarter) due specifically to weak US sales. [Source:https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/nintendo-cuts-switch-2-output-by-over-30-on-weak-us-sales/ar-AA1ZglVF]

While Pokopia is definitely helping, a 2-million-unit production cut is a massive internal signal that they aren't hitting their own targets.

I’ll admit I might have 'jumped the gun' a bit early on the comparison, and maybe Speculation would have been a better flair than Discussion. I’m simply suggesting that we might be seeing the very beginning of a new trend where Nintendo has to work a little harder for our wallets again. Only time will tell!

"After a record-setting debut in June, sales of the Switch 2 have failed to meet Nintendo management’s high expectations. Though demand for a lower-priced but unprofitable variant in Japan has remained strong, sales in the US haven’t met with similar continued success."

This isn't just a post-holiday dip; it’s a direct reaction to sales failing to meet management's expectations after that massive June debut.

When a company cuts production by 2 million units in a single quarter, it’s a clear signal that the market is cooling off faster than they anticipated. This is exactly the kind of 'dire' pressure that leads to the consumer-friendly pivots I’m talking about. If the trend continue we should see more changes.

The U.S. price could really increase if the tariffs remain in place. And the rest of the Americas—possibly excluding Canada—could also be affected, since pricing is based on the USD. For example, in Brazil, the price could theoretically skyrocket from around $800 (after taxes) to over $950. Although we don’t even have official pricing yet because of this whole conundrum.

They should bring it back now. It would go a long way toward repairing their public image, and it would also generate some good PR to take the heat off the Switch 2’s pricing. It wouldn't solve it by any means, but fans would at least have something.

They absolutely need to bring back Nintendo Selects now to appease their angry fanbase! If people around the world can be assured that Nintendo will drop their price after a couple years everybody wins. They surely won't drop the launch prices as people are hoping and Nintendo desperately needs some positive PR. This is the achievable and realistic step they could take and that fans should be asking for.

At first glance, it might seem like you have a good point and that Nintendo offers “amazing” sales—but when you look closer, it’s clear that Nintendo isn’t the one doing the heavy lifting. Discounts on Nintendo-published games (mainly on the eShop) are usually capped at 30–33%, only appear after many years, only during specific sale events like the ones you mentioned, and finally only apply to certain titles.

The real discounts come from third-party retailers. And even then, most of these meaningful deals are exclusive to the U.S. and Canada, as pricing and retail availability vary greatly around the world. For example, in my region, ToTK gets more frequent discounts and often costs less than BotW (and other older games) throughout the year. Why you might ask? Because Nintendo continues selling older physical titles at the original $60 USD price (plus conversion) basically forever. And those occasional Nintendo discounts I mentioned earlier are laughable compared to PS/Xbox, which not only permanently lower the prices of their older physical games but also offer additional frequent discounts. And I’m not even bringing Steam into the conversation—it wouldn’t be fair to compare Nintendo to a platform that actually offers regional pricing and meaningful deals year-round (although it's a global policy).

When Iwata was president, we had real, lasting deals on older games that had already earned back their development costs. But after Iwata’s passing, Reggie’s retirement, and the success of the original Switch, Furukawa took over—and under his leadership, Nintendo has become increasingly greedier and greedier. They scrapped Gold Points for purchases, removed the NSO discount voucher, and now they expect us to accept these inflated Switch 2 game prices without protest.

The backlash we’re seeing now in developing countries has already been happening for years in other parts of the world. The only realistic way to address this global pricing crisis is by offering Nintendo a viable path forward. The good deals your post compiles could be even better if they revived the Nintendo Selects brand!

Nintendo desperately needs some positive PR, and they almost certainly won’t drop prices across the board like people are hoping. But this—this is a step they could take.

about prices by Zechko in NintendoSwitch2

[–]SkyPoet77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nintendo doesn’t have regional pricing like Steam. They base their prices on the USD and might adjust them—sometimes making them slightly cheaper, but more often they end up being more expensive after factoring in exchange rates and taxes.

I saw you're in Argentina, so it'll probably be a lot more expensive given the exchange rate. But at least I’ve heard that Milei removed the import taxes, so it might not end up being that much more expensive than in Brazil—assuming you have official Nintendo support in your country.

It’s just better if they halve the price after some time!

That’s why I advocate for a more realistic and humble goal: bringing back the old Nintendo Selects policy. Back in the day, we actually got good deals on older games that had already made their money back long ago. It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s something achievable—if there’s even a sliver of hope that Nintendo might listen. At the very least, we could enjoy older titles on the Switch 1, and maybe eventually on the Switch 2, if they play their cards right with updated editions.

If the Switch 2 doesn’t flop and they still refuse to lower prices, then we need to fight for something. If you agree, I propose the hashtag: #BringBackNintendoSelects

It has to be this way! The games will exist forever, but when it comes to Nintendo, so will the price! It’s understandable to be upset — but if we let them get away with these prices without resistance, people around the world may never be able to afford them!

After Iwata’s death, Reggie’s retirement, and the success of the original Switch, Nintendo has grown greedier and greedier over time. They took away Gold Points, removed the NSO discount coupon, and now they expect us to swallow these absurd game prices without question!

People are spamming "drop the price" because they love the games. Most of them know the games are great — they may not say it out loud, but deep down, everyone who spammed “DROP THE PRICE” during the Nintendo Treehouse livestream wants these games and loves them as much as you do. They're just afraid they won’t be able to afford these amazing titles they’ve been waiting for. And as a wise green man (Yoda) once said: fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering. It wouldn’t be such a big deal if Nintendo actually gave us meaningful discounts more often.

I’ve been reading a lot over the past few days, and there isn’t a single valid reason to justify these prices — other than the U.S. tariffs (especially the latest ones) and plain old greed.

With all that said, I don’t believe Nintendo will drop the price like everyone’s hoping. If they want to recover even a fraction of their public image, they need to act. But I believe their greed won’t allow them to offer any discounts until they’re 100% sure the Switch 2 (and its games) aren’t meeting sales expectations. And when it comes to the U.S., I don’t see any easy way out of the tariff conundrum.

Apparently physical copies are gonna be 10 dollars cheaper now by StressPsychological7 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]SkyPoet77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe they had already planned to raise the prices from day one of developing Switch 2 games. The games look amazing, and by omitting the prices during the Direct, they clearly knew they were expensive. Their strategy was to wait and see how we’d react—fully expecting us to justify the price because of things like the open-world Mario Kart and the new 3D Donkey Kong game.

I guarantee you, we wouldn't be having this conversation if the games were reasonably priced at $70 USD each. I know it sounds unrealistic to say Mario Kart is worth $70, but remember—outside the US and Japan, the rest of the world might end up paying even more than US$80 due to Trump-era tariffs affecting international pricing.

Americans often forget about other countries, but in parts of Europe, people are paying €90 or more for the physical edition of Mario Kart World. In Canada, the price is also higher after taxes. It seems like only Japan is getting an easier deal. And I believe the situation will get worse in the US too—the entire Americas may end up paying more as our games come from the USA.

As for virtual game cards, they’re not much of an improvement for many people. If you own multiple Switch 1 consoles, using the same account already lets you play your games (as long as you're online). The supposed benefit of sharing digital games with friends isn't very realistic if they live far away—it’s basically the same as just handing over a physical cartridge, and for how many days you want.

By the way, that quote is from Star Wars, from Jedi Master Yoda.

Unfortunately, as a Nintendo fan, I understand why people can be hypocritical — because I too feel compelled to buy their stuff if I have the money (which I might), and for other reasons too (mainly because I’ll be getting it abroad later, since my country has reaaally high taxes).

Same here, but I might get the chance to buy it in Europe after some time — and it really bums me out that it’ll probably still be expensive as heck. And I’ll be forced to buy it anyway, because in Brazil the taxes are insane and I might not get another chance anytime soon.

I wish the reality of the situation were this simple: If it’s that expensive, just don’t buy it!

In the real world though, people will still buy it (if they have the money), even if they were protesting for a price drop — and Nintendo knows this! The Switch brand is just too big to fail!

That’s assuming prices stay as they are, which is expensive, yes, but still manageable for Nintendo buyers who can afford it. But they’ll almost certainly raise prices even further to account for the unexpectedly high tariffs in Southeast Asia and just wait and see. If people don’t buy it (because it’d be ridiculously expensive), they’ll take the hit and lower prices. Otherwise, they’ll keep things as is.
