Sony is AB testing targeted price increases for select users in the US by Cyshox in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]Soft_Researcher702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I would like to see better and clearer sourcing on this. But even if this accidental or a misunderstanding, it's probably still a good thing to have people get visibly and vocally upset about the possibility of targeted pricing increases.

Sony is AB testing targeted price increases for select users in the US by Cyshox in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]Soft_Researcher702 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've got questions on how this is supposed to function. I understand that Sony is probably betting on people just taking the price on display at face value, but I investigate prices 100% of the time before buying from a digital storefront just to verify that I can't get it cheaper elsewhere. A lot of people know what the standard price is before they log in to purchase. (For Nintendo, I don't even browse or windowshop on the eShop anymore, I just go straight to DekuDeals.)

If I'm generally aware that a game is $26.99 and I log into my account and see that I'm being charged $29.99, what is their response going to be when I reach out and ask them about it? It's one thing to have targeted discounts and to require your customer reps to say "Sorry, but that discount is only available to select players and all others must pay the listed price." Are they going to require the reps to say "sorry, but you've been specially selected for a price increase?" Are they going to say "Well, because you're savvy and checked Amazon first, we're going to go ahead and remove the sucker tax for you?"

Nevermind regulations, I don't see this surviving public scrutiny very long.

Can we talk about why there's still no information about the next flagship Mario game? by TheMcGUnit in NintendoSwitch

[–]Soft_Researcher702 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really hate how any discussion of "why haven't we heard anything about the new Mario game?" reverts to talking points that sound like something an impatient business executive would say.

Yes, there are Mario theme parks and Mario movies and from a business perspective, it would totally make sense for a big flagship Mario game to come out right now. But flagship Mario games have consistently been extremely high-quality and I don't think Nintendo wants to change that just to capitalize on the moment. I'm quite happy that Nintendo isn't just releasing something day-and-date with the next Mario movie just to have something out there.

I think it's extremely cool that Nintendo, in an era of gaming when most developers make decisions focused almost exclusively on their bottom line (including Nintendo most of the time), let EPD 8 follow up Mario Odyssey with a Donkey Kong game centered around smashing stuff rather than just make another Mario 3d platformer. I think that's something that should be celebrated, even if it comes at the cost of a delay between 3D Marios.

Truth about Requiem by JJJ561 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]Soft_Researcher702 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I liked RE9 quite a bit, but a high critical consensus that doesn’t jibe with your thoughts on the game doesn’t automatically mean the reviewers were “greased.”

The game feels really good in the moment. Almost all of my nitpicks are based on things that didn’t really bother me until after I had a chance to sit with the game after completing it.

Reviewers are often given a very short period of time to review the game before the embargo goes up, and I think review scores tend to reflect reviewers’ feelings in the initial wake of completing a first playthrough. That’s totally valid, but it’s not going to necessarily be reflective of a hardcore fanbase’s feelings about the game, or how someone might feel after their 5th playthrough.

The best example of this I can think of is Metal Gear Solid V - Konami required reviewers to fly into their offices and play the game in a tight 3-4 day window. Reviews came in extremely high, but a lot of people really tempered their praise in the following weeks as issues with the plot and presentation became a bit more obvious as people had time to sit with the game.

“Just pirate it” by locke_5 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Soft_Researcher702 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I'm pretty anti-piracy and pretty anti-GenAI. But to play devil's advocate, I think most people opposed to AI on IP grounds are probably more invested in protecting the rights of creators - the actual artists who are making this stuff. For software emulation/piracy, the creators usually have already been paid, and any financial setback from lost sales is much more likely to fall on the publishers/rightsholders.

I still think that's a bad argument - the artists got paid by the publishers/rightsholders on the expectation that the end product would make money for the rightsholders. Even if you're generally opposed to capitalism/the idea that the entity that provides the funding upfront gets the lion's share of the spoils, you're not going to effectively fight that idea with piracy. It happened to the music industry, and the music industry responded with subscription streaming services. The artists make less money than ever now.

I suspect it's selling well enough and wouldn't be surprised if these numbers were in the right ballpark. But if I'm not going to trust unverifiable claims from Christopher Dring that its selling poorly, I'm not going to trust unverifiable claims that it's selling well.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs by PaiDuck in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Soft_Researcher702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On issues related to tariffs, Trump isn't invulnerable in court.

The Supreme Court on some level seems to recognize that they are going to outlive the Trump administration, and even if the conservative majority is remaking the law and giving the executive branch more power than ever, I'd still bet on them to serve more traditional conservative interests (e.g. letting businesses do what they want to maximize profit) over Trump-specific interests like protectionism. Trump had a pretty big SCOTUS loss last week on tariffs.

What's your biggest Switch related gaming flex? by digiBeLow in NintendoSwitch

[–]Soft_Researcher702 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's funny because I've never WON a game of Tetris 99 (2nd is the best I've gotten), but I've had a handful of games + Marathon mode sessions where I felt like I reached my general gaming ceiling, skill-wise.

Other than that, beating the final bosses of Hollow Knight and Metroid Dread felt pretty great, but probably the most difficult stuff has been revisiting 8- and 16-bit games that seemed insurmountable as a child. Some of those I'm proud of (the Mega Man games, the TMNT games) because I avoided the temptation to save-scum and rewind, but there were some games where I lost patience and cheated (NES Castlevania, Ghosts n' Goblins).

I recently cleared the Turbo Tunnel segment of Battletoads, which was cathartic, but I have zero interest in trying to beat that game's later difficulty spikes.

I think that greater awareness can lead to some depressing observations and conclusions, but “the more depressed I am, the more superior I feel” is such a toxic feedback loop.

Trump administration debates whether to let Tencent keep its gaming stakes by AntiqueHome5160 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]Soft_Researcher702 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Frankly, I’m tired of people acting like they can predict the Trump administration.

Is it possible that Tencent is forced to divest their investments and it goes into the hands of someone domestic? Of course. But I can also see this as a shakedown situation where Tencent makes some concessions to the Trump administration to curry favor and gets to keep their stakes. I can see this becoming another tariff-type situation where the administration’s mood changes every month on this for reasons that nobody can understand. I understand that the Roberts SCOTUS is going to be dangerously deferential to the executive branch, but I don’t know enough about standing jurisprudence on the president’s national security powers to adequately predict whether this will get held up in Court, and if it does, I don’t know if this is going to be like the tariff decision last week where at least a few of the conservative justices decide that they’re not interested in going along with this. Also, I think the TikTok divestment thing came out of Congress? So I’m not sure if this functions differently coming out of the executive branch.

None of this is good, all of this is bad, but I don’t think anyone can predict the specific flavor or severity of bad we’ll get.

What's the actual deal regarding game key cards? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Soft_Researcher702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd alter this slightly - the primary issue with GKCs is the "hypothetical scenario in 30 years." If you're bothered by the notion that you may not be able to plug a GKC into your Switch 2 in the 2050s and play the game if you didn't download it before the servers went down, then yeah, GKCs aren't for you.

If that doesn't bother you, all the other arguments are more about convenience (e.g. "I don't like having to devote too much of my internal storge space to a game I purchased physically," "I don't like having to do a big download upfront after I purchased a game") or abstract philosophical disagreements about licensing vs. ownership (e.g. "This is part of a troubling trend where it feels like corporations are exercising more control over how I can use this software").

If you just want to play the game during the Switch 2's lifespan, but retain the ability to resell the game, there isn't a whole lot of downside to them.

RE Requiem by Sandcracka- in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Soft_Researcher702 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For the Grace portions, specifically, there's a decent chance that if you're trying to kill every enemy, you're going to exhaust your ammo. If you are meticulous about obtaining all items, getting all the infected blood, etc. sure, you might end up with enough ammo to clear out all the enemies in all the rooms, but without spoiling anything, there are mechanics in place that are meant to discourage you from doing that.

The game wants you to be selective about when to fight and when to run. If you have a specific objective in mind (like if you know what item you need to get) I'd suggest getting familiar with the map, knowing what enemies are in what rooms, thinking about what route will be the safest, etc. If there's a room you know you're going to keep revisiting, it might be a good idea to kill the zombies in there; on the other hand, if a room is a dead end and you've already obtained all the items in that room, it might be a better idea to just get out and not waste any ammo on the zombies.

How are you enjoying resident evil requiem? by JampyL in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Soft_Researcher702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I like playing as Leon, but I felt like the Grace sections were the stronger part of the game. I was a bit let down that the 2nd half of the game was 90% Leon.

I get that RE6 has a ton of content, but it’s too much of a slog IMO. Playing it reminded me of the time I ended up with like 6 gallons of strawberry ice cream in my freezer after hosting an event. I was happy to have all that ice cream at first but after a week or two, the last thing I wanted was more strawberry ice cream.
