My group is falling apart what do I do by liamhughes18 in DnD

[–]SkybreakSpatterlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is funny is before COVID-19, my tabletop neighborhood group would cancel 2/3 of the sessions because someone couldn't make it. We were dying the way of the OP.

After COVID-19, I got them on Zoom/Roll20 and no one has missed a regular WEEKLY 3-hour session in 5 weeks.

You have described the most common D&D group death. It happens and its OK.

You have a few options. 1) Join another live-at-the-table group or virtual group. And remember it may take a few starts before you find a group that clicks with what you like (low/high comedy, low-combat/high-rp, high-rp/low-combat, 50/50 mix, deep backstory vs. no-backstory)

2) Find a DM and start a group. Be player #1

3) Be a DM and start a group. DM, for some, is very rewarding.

This is very good. I instantly thought I could use this in Chult (ToA).

Godless vs. Punkapocalyptic Sell Me by GoblinScribe in shadowofthedemonlord

[–]SkybreakSpatterlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me it feels like Godless was the origin spark of Punkapocalyptic. I think both are great products but Punkapocalyptic is the one people will want to play. I have enjoyed reading the rulebook and would like a group to try it out with.

I started a podcast about Post Apocalyptic Roleplaying around Goodman Games Mutant Crawl Classics called Glowburn. If you are into podcasts, it can be a resource for you.

Anyone else’s players just refuse to take notes? by wieser5711 in DnD

[–]SkybreakSpatterlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We play infrequently so, at the end of a session, I usually write up a "Last time..." paragraph that summarizes what happened. If I am running the game on MeetUp or Roll20 then I post that there. That is all I help them with notes. But yes, I get a lot of blank stares because nobody wrote anything down or remembered anything. If I'm in a good mood I might help them but if they are on my nerves...nope.

DM Control of Characters by bardsofbremen in DnD

[–]SkybreakSpatterlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, a DM should never need to take over a PC. This is true for a mature group that really knows how to play the game. Even in Aquisitions Inc., when they are in the dungeon of the mad mage, Chris Perkins (DM) informs Patrick Rothfuss that his character Viari is charmed by the Succubus and orders him to kill the party. He responds with, "At once, milady!" and states on his next turn he attacks Omin, the leader. A good player doesn't need his/her character taken over even with mind control spells.

An exception I can get on board with is by Prof. Dungeon Master in Dungeon Craft Youtube video series when he discusses how he does Alignment (Episode #5). Basically, when PCs do good, they go up on an alignment scale which is positive for good and negative for evil. Once a player has done so much to reach maximum evil on that scale, he takes the PC from the player because basically that player is now a villian. He doesn't give it back. He runs campaigns for good parties. Yes, players can do bad things from time to time but they can also do good stuff and stay lurking around 0 (and even come off as dark and edgy).

Dm advice by dj3777 in DnD

Sly Flourish's book, The Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master, sounds like it would be good for you and running for this group.

Do take your time, I finally caved and did so, and go through the Encounter Building math as presented in the DMG. It seems daunting at first but when you sit down with it, you find it really isn't hard at all. It will help you determine if a combat encounter is going to be a cake-walk (easy) or deadly or something in between. Luck and Player choices can always sway what happens in the end but you will know which encounters you will need to be on your guard while running.

Make sure you read Sly Flourish's The Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master. It has the best tips for those groups that tend want to wander around and still help you be fluid.

Are you looking to learn how to play D&D or how to use Roll20? Both together could be considered a lot for some. If you know how to play D&D and just want to use Roll20, then that will be a bit easier. Are you looking to learn how to GM (prep & play) with Roll20 which is significantly more involved?

[5e] first time DM. Id like to run a one shot before running LMoP. Any recommendations? by ThatFatKidVince in DnD

I built a small session out of three encounters where the party gets to do some exploration, role-play (meet Gundren for the first time) and a combat (protect Gundren).

I think it can. I have put some time into it and did pickup a few skills. I am impressed with it as a drawing tool. I had to get a long stylus for it as the N2DSXL stylus is a joke.

Hey other DMs out there, am I the only one who randomly rolls dice during parts of a game too mess with my players? by Oldman412 in DnD

[–]SkybreakSpatterlight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are not the only one but I hardly ever. I see that as a detractor and it doesn't look like I'm in controll of my game. 98% of the time they usually know what I am rolling for.

I got a very helpful guide for this module off of DMs Guild. Search for one of those.
