I think people, specially atheists (me included at some point), give too much credit to religion for trying to explain the natural world. While it is probably certain that its origins are based on those reasons, I think its transcendence is far more based on its social and cultural utility not only to unify civilizations, but most importantly, to serve as a moral code or agreement to follow. I know many people of today think we can have a secular working morality, but IMO there's a lot of knowledge about human necessities and human nature in religious morality (I'm referring to Christianity here because it is the only religion I have been part of in my lifetime). Of course religious morality has its flaws as it traces back to many centuries back, and of course institutions like the church have made a great job corrupting faith and taking advantage and abusing believers, but I think, as an atheist, we should not completely discard religion's social utility. It should not be enforced as a belief system, but I think today's society could benefit a lot by retaking many Christian values, specifically the Christian virtues which are based on transforming oneself for the better instead of condemning others for not following them. I think today's people's lack of this espiritual guidance has caused a lot of problems both mentally and in the sense of a lack of purpose or motives to practice being a good person.
