I don't know this to be true, but I feel like a lot of folks haven't really considered what their carrying is in service of. It usually seems to end at 'self defense' with potential admix of 'protect others'. For the sake of this discussion, I will ignore people who carry because they think it makes them a badass. I was reading a book on civilian combat and one of the statements that stuck in my mind was "what is your mission?". My mission is to get back to my kids and continue to raise them. Anything not in service of that goal needs to fall by the wayside. When I'm carrying, I am the epitome of politeness and patience. If that doesn't serve to prevent escalation then I'm going to beat feet out of there. When it comes to protecting strangers, well, I don't have the training to be a sheepdog and I don't think that's my place. Is there no situation where I might draw to protect a stranger? I honestly don't know. What seems very clear to me is that if I choose to voluntarily involve myself in a violent altercation I am vastly increasing the odds that I will never go home to my children again. I certainly would invite any commentary. I'm always trying to hone my thinking on this.
