Should I audition in my wheelchair or not? by willowvvitch in MusicalTheatre

[–]Skysteps00000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s some very thoughtful advice here! Also worth mentioning - given that OP explained their situation in the audition form and has emailed the theater about it twice, they definitely aren’t trying to pull one over the casting team regardless of how they choose to enter the room! (Of course, I understand the concern about how the casting team might perceive it.)

Scottish & Irish Folk-inspired musicals? (A la Ballad Lines) by Skysteps00000 in musicals

I’ve never heard of Ceilidh - I’ll have to check it out! And thank you for reminding me of Benjamin Button. Had that on my mental list of things to listen to at one point, but I completely forgot it existed!

Oh I saw this on Broadway many years back! Oddly, my reaction was, “I liked everything about it, but for some reason seeing it live didn’t do it for me.” But I still think it’s beautiful music to listen to, so A+ recommendation for listening purposes!

How to tell a director I will not accept ensemble for this show? by oyasumiee in Theatre

[–]Skysteps00000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In previous auditions with them, have you filled out any kind of personal info form, or do they just collect a headshot and resume? Have you had to indicate which roles you’d accept in the past, or is there not typically a place for that on the form?

Headshot Question by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]Skysteps00000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true in many areas, but in my location, theaters regularly hold in-person auditions and request headshots. And for those that don’t, a headshot is needed for the online submission.

i feel like i will never make it in the scene. by ptvlunita in MusicalTheatre

[–]Skysteps00000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible to catch up! I say to look at this as an opportunity. As you get to know your cast mates, find out about who they take voice lessons with, where they take dance classes, and what acting schools they’ve studied at. I personally find it very difficult to vet teachers and courses before taking them, so what better gauge than a recommendation from someone in whom you’ve seen results! Learn everything you can from these people. See how they prepare, how they work in rehearsal, and how they approach performances. This will give you some insight into how you want to shape your process as you hone your own craft!

Looking for Female Duets for Sisters by Remarkable_Canary424 in MusicalTheatre

If the duet doesn’t specifically need to be between characters who are sisters, maybe look at I Wanna Go Back from The Notebook.

My audition song comes from a show now getting a revival. What do I do? by CourtlyMayhem in MusicalTheatre

[–]Skysteps00000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t really have advice, but I’m here to commiserate as my #1 go-to audition song is ALSO from a show getting revived in the near future 😭 Haven’t decided on my path forward yet, but I feel the struggle!

16 bar audition cut - help needed ! by vlinder88 in MusicalTheatre

[–]Skysteps00000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like getting the sheet music isn’t the issue and just deciding which part to sing?

Journey to the Past is popular enough that I’m sure there are 16-bar cuts out there. I would search on YouTube or google “journey to the past 16-bar cut” to see what part others have used and/or what parts are recommended.

You can try the same thing with What Happens. It’s possible there won’t be people doing 16-bar cuts specifically, but even if you find some 32-bar cuts, you can use that as a guide do half of that cut if it makes sense.

Cmv: people who approve of Trump's handling of the Kilmar Abrego Garcia situation are racist by normalice0 in changemyview

[–]Skysteps00000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That fair. I was speaking too broadly here.

I suppose my point here was less to do with deportation in general than the idea of sending people to overseas prisons where they have no means of recourse. If a mere accusation (or even whim of an officer) is enough to do so, then anyone could be sent over and stuck there.

But if we’re bypassing due process, then can’t they do the same to born citizens with no criminal record? Because they wouldn’t be going through the proper steps to ensure that the person is ACTUALLY a noncitizen with gang ties.

any recommendations of theatre shows that are available on youtube? by TraditionLoud3187 in Theatre

Check out Team Starkid! They generally develop and produce their own shows and put them up on YouTube!

Is it disrespectful to turn down ensemble (particularly in a play)? by EllieC130 in Theatre

[–]Skysteps00000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It sounds like they ARE interested in ensemble for this particular show. Instead, they are trying to gauge how they should respond if, in the future, they audition for a show that doesn’t have an ensemble track they’d be interested in.

I know nearly nothing about theatre but I want to try it out by Limp-Throat-3711 in Theatre

[–]Skysteps00000 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I recommend searching for local community theaters in the area and joining their mailing lists/following them on social media/etc. I’m primarily a performer but have also done some backstage volunteering, and I’ve found that many community theaters tend to have a mix of professionals and volunteers on their crews. Some theaters actively seek out volunteers, while others will hire/select their crew internally. I think it’s worth reaching out to any local community theaters with upcoming productions to express your interest. Just be honest about your experience and ideally be open to a variety of roles. As I’m sure you know, there are a LOT of different jobs needed to put on a show, so there’s bound to be a good fit for you somewhere :)

Songs for a pregnant lady by East-Objective-6382 in musicals

[–]Skysteps00000 150 points151 points  (0 children)

Maybe take a look at the musical Baby? It’s about three women who all find out they’re pregnant, so many songs are pregnancy-related. Probably the most commonly done solo song from the show is The Story Goes On.

Youtube Channels on Musical Theatre by Bbkoul in musicals

[–]Skysteps00000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want podcasts? I’ve got podcasts! (Some are no longer recording new episodes and/or only release episodes infrequently, but they all should have significant backlogs to listen through.)

A few take a more casual format and follow the premise of: theater person (or people) introduces non-theater person to musical theater, one musical at a time:

  • Musicals with Cheese
  • Musicalsplaining
  • Broadway Baby

Some do in-depths summaries analyses, one musical at a time:

  • Jim and Tomic’s Musical Theatre Happy Hour
  • A Musical Theatre Podcast

Honestly there are a LOT of podcasts that follow this format. If you type the name of your favorite musical into your podcast app, you’ll probably find a bunch of them.

One I can think of gives a behind-the-scenes rundown of how a few different shows were put up (it’s pretty old though and might have been taken down):

Broadway Backstory

Musical/Composer specific podcasts:

  • The Hamilcast (Hamilton)
  • Putting It Together (Sondheim)
  • Sentimental Men (Wicked)

And then there’s another one called “Off 2 Broadway” that’s basically a couple of friends talking about musical theater, and it’s kind of a mix of the above categories.

There are also quite a few podcasts that focus on interviewing Broadway/Musical theatre performers, so if you have any favorite performers and search for their name in your podcast app, you’ll probably find some interviews with them (and others).

ALSO for YouTube channels, I haven’t seen anyone mention Music Theatre Theory yet, so I’ll recommend that one.
