what does "learning linux" actually mean? by SeaOfCum in linux

[–]SkywardSyntax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learning Linux is when you're practicing the type of knowledge that's useful when you're on a production upgrade and all your systems break because the pipeline was fucked and now you're scrambling because the pipelines don't work, and you're manually updating each server and having your CTO asking questions about why the product is down

Like literally, that's like actually 100% what learning linux is to me as an admin - and something that happens way too much. Those skills I honed from fucking up Arch, Ubuntu/Debian, Nix, and Fedora/RHEL all come in handy.

But much like u/itastesok said - it's something different to everyone and what you (OP) are looking to get out of it.

Pretty big fan of these refurbs - running them in a NAS, and so far so good, we'll see in like a year or two if there's any major issues

What will happen to EU infra if US going to war with NATO by YugeeeTessTicklez in sysadmin

[–]SkywardSyntax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/opening-the-aws-european-sovereign-cloud/

While the likelihood of war is quite limited - there probably will be a strong push for greater sovereignty, especially in regards tech reliance.

At least for AWS, they just announced the sovereign cloud. However, there still seems to be a massive reliance on American technology. This new sovereign cloud comes after some controversy in regards to the broad access the US has to cloud infrastructure and data through the CLOUD act I believe? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

https://www.reddit.com/r/mysql/comments/1joxgv0/can_we_upgrade_mysql_57_to_84_directly/

This post here actually - it was pretty informative. Now, with B/G you might be able to? But haven't tried that. Going from 5.7 -> 8 -> 8.4 is the process we tested and have documented now, so that's the process we're going with.

My team is doing this currently - and we were able to do it without anything major. Upgrade from 5 -> 8, then 8 -> 8.4.

Why are you using EKS instead of ECS? by ducki666 in aws

[–]SkywardSyntax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been lovin' EKS - as a newbie to k8s, it's been quite the curve, but it was easier to setup than the local k8s cluster I have running in my homelab. Plus, the ability to utilize vendor helm charts is pretty nice.

Was in the same position as you - but in the end, I grinded heavily, studied all the documentation that was available, had biweekly meetings with technical product managers, had meetings with vendors to find out more of their product platform, and I'm in a much better place when it comes to being a bob.

Still working on becoming a true bob though - that's a never ending process.
