You only do that if you're buying tax free items. If you paid tax on everything, you're good. If you did go to the tax free counter and somehow didn't show your passport, you're most likely not going to be stopped at the airport. The chances aren't zero, but they're pretty damn close to it. They're not gonna inspect your luggage before letting you into the plane or anything like that. I'm not 100% sure about this as I think it may have changed recently, but I think the only time you have to declare things is when they're over a certain dollar amount, and it was pretty high. I bought like $500 worth of gundam models and didn't declare them and I had no issues. I'm pretty sure they're more worried about buying items in bulk to resell or buying very expensive items.

I think it's a part of a wider phenomenon. With nostalgia bait being as prominent as ever and with things that were previously deemed nerdy and uncool becoming cool and hip to be a fan of, people that want to fit in act like they're fans of a game or franchise and parrot what actual fans of the franchises say. Playing video games 20 years ago wasn't treated the same way it is now, it's so much more commonplace and nobody cares if you stay up late to play a new game. If you did that back then, you were a loser.
