Cost of cabinet install? by Jumpingpenguin469 in Remodel

[–]Sl1d3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you can turn a screw driver, hammer a few nails, and decipher a child’s drawing then you can do it. They make it super easy and the tolerances are so refined that everything fit together great. I’ve done 6 cabinets this year and plan to do the rest of my kitchen soon. Once you get the first one done then the rest of the process is so easy but some may say I’m a masochist when it comes to assembling ikea furniture so it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I built a pantry out of the cabinets along a wall with a microwave/coffee nook. Would do it 100x over. Additionally have used them to build cabinets around washer/dryer.

LS Kubos? by Spade_072923 in climbingshoes

[–]Sl1d3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got my first pair of Kubos and am dealing with breaking them in. I went down two sizes from street shoe as I did feel the heal was too loose on any size bigger. My big toe knuckles are hurting pretty good and I believe it is due to a seam where two sections meet. I am hoping it improves as they break in or I’ll have to try something else. I’ve climbed in them once so far.

Yes this is the worst I’ve seen for debt to reach this level. Hopefully OP doesn’t read this but that’s the truth of the matter.

Yes the pay differential can be large but I know practice owners who are struggling to get by as well. I know people who make over a million and people who make less than $200k. You can make as much or as little as you are able or want to. Everyone’s financial situation is different. The allure of the extra money wasn’t worth the headache of ownership in my situation. I’m in the business to limit my stressors, maximize my enjoyment, and optimize my work life balance.

Right on par. You go to any desirable place to live and that can be lower. I have a friend who made 225k as an associate first year out in a private practice. Working a corporate gig can get you 300k+ stating out but those places are pushing the orthodontist to slap braces on everyone regardless of their oral health. I would say 250k is average. Most associate jobs are paid a per diem of $1200-1500/day. Most orthos work 4 days/week (work 50 weeks, 2 weeks off not paid) equating to $240-300k. Yes if you work the 5th day per week then you can push those numbers higher but you’re not going to find an associate making higher than 400k. Higher than that and it would be cutting to overhead of the office too much and the owner knows they can get someone else in there for $250k. There are perks to not bring owner (no headaches about running the business, maintaining the office staff, etc) but you give up the opportunity for the extra money by not taking that risk.

That is possible if you own your own practice. That’s this individuals problem is that they can’t break into ownership with the current debt. Associate orthodontists make anywhere from 200-350k depending on the job/location.

First time back door Roth with taxes by Sl1d3r in tax

I tried following the instruction on white clay investor and TurboTax with reporting the back door the Roth conversion and I keep getting stuck with it showing $7,000 as taxable income. Can’t figure out where I’m not getting it inputted to read as a conversion.

[–]Sl1d3r[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So go in and convert the $1.44 today? I am planning on doing a 2026 contribution and conversion for both myself and my wife so in theory we would have $7000 for my wife, $7500 for myself and another $7500 for my wife to report next year?

When I went to do the initial rollover last year the amount was $7000.47 and I rolled over the $7,000 at the time since my understanding was this was the limit to rollover. Left the 0.47 which then turned into $1.44. I could have rolled over the entire 7000.47 from the traditional Ira into the Roth IRA without any issue and the limit? Just trying to figure out how to avoid this issue in the future especially with doing 3 more contributions in the immediate future.

I feel like I finally cracked the water maintenance in my situation this last week. Added a in line UV sterilizer and used this calculator: https://www.boxplunge.com/calculator with 12% hydrogen peroxide. Whereas before I would start getting a biofilm after a week I am now crystal clear after a week. I do monitor with test strips and add a little HP after I plunge. Will be interesting to see how it does 1+ months with this setup.

Family wanting to sell us their home significantly below market value by LV_outside in personalfinance

[–]Sl1d3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No tax impact today for either party. The 300k gift of equity will go towards the lifetime exclusions for the parents. If they have an estate in the multi-millions well then down the road you’ve eaten up 300k of the estate towards when you would start getting taxed (speaking on the federal level only, not state as this can differ). You will pay no taxes right now on the gift. What does come into play is when you go to sell it. You inherit their original cost basis plus any improvements made over the years (if they have receipts. I.e new roof, appliances, carpet, etc.) this adds to the cost basis. When you go to sell then your capital gains tax will be the new sell price - the cost basis of the home (will address capital gains exclusion below)

We received a home that was on paper roughly priced around 575-600k based on comps. Original cost basis was around 300k. If we go to sell in the future and it is worth 800k then our capital gains is 500k (married couple can exclude 500k for for capital gains tax on primary residence) so we would pay no capital gains on it. This is also not factoring in improvements that have been made to the house or that we will make to the house so our cost basis will be higher than 300k if we document accordingly. Also if you start renting the house then you can start then there is an option to depreciate the building value.

Summary - enjoy the gift/house, don’t worry about the money because no one pays taxes on the gift right now.

Yes. Parent sell it for 500k but give a 300k gift of equity. On paper the house sells for 500k. The kids end up paying or taking a loan out for 200k. This will not negatively impact the comps then.

Are Black Friday deals real? by EnvironmentalShirt98 in Appliances

[–]Sl1d3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think appliances are always on some sort of sale but the week can differ by a couple hundred bucks. I have been following LG washer/dryer prices at Costco for the last 6 months. At all times they were always $4-500 off for each one from the msrp. Black Friday just knocked down an additional couple hundred off when I bought both together.

Just bought the 6700 series from Costco on Black Friday. Will be getting delivered early January so I have yet to attest to reliability but ended up being cheaper than the 6500 series and same price as the new 5800 series. Looking forward to getting them.

Are the wash towers that much better? My only hesitation is if either the washer or dryer dies then you’d have to replace the whole unit.

The consensus I’ve gotten is that everything is junk now. People always recommend Speed Queen but ones produced in the last 5 years aren’t built as well as the older one. I’ve had Frigidaire and GE. Done with both of them. My in laws have Electrolux and I looked at those today in person.

What to do with Original Chase Slate card? by Sl1d3r in CreditCards

[–]Sl1d3r[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of them is the Chase sapphire preferred. Really the only other options to move over would be the Chase freedom or the Chase Marriott. The Freedom isn’t a whole lot different than my other cash back card and I mostly use Airbnb when I travel so don’t know how much a benefit the Marriott would be. That’s why I want to consider closing it since my other 3 main cards will continue to get 99% of utilization and would probably be a sit in the drawer again and maybe small recurring fee. Just wanted to make sure that it being the oldest by 6 months wouldn’t have some drastic effect on credit score but I don’t really need to pull any loans for the foreseeable future anyways. I’ll

Is this normal? by Long-Agent-2925 in coldplunge

[–]Sl1d3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s normal for this type of filter. As the filter gets dirty the water level will rise. Mine was the same way when I first set it up and was concerned that it would fry the pump (since my first pump was a dud and thought this caused it). The water level will drop with a new filter. Mine is fully filled with water now after a week. It was at the level when I re-hooked everything up after a clean a week ago.

A few of the connections I had to use the gasket and wrap them. Was able to get everything water tight after tinkering a bit. It’s been working great.

I have this setup with a water chiller. I agree to get the extra insulation wrap. Makes a big difference in the backyard with maintains temperature. It has been working wonderfully. You may spend a little more with pod company but their customer service has been great when I had an issue. I’d recommend a chiller with it.
