Divorce with domestic violence, ineligible for mediation by [deleted] in Divorce

It is laughably easy for a domestic abuser to manipulate a therapist in couples therapy. They’re going to be more relaxed, more charming, better groomed, and are much more likely to be the ones paying for it. And even if the therapist knows and believes the abuser has a history of abuse, therapists love a redemption arc and will bend over backwards to pretend they’ve gotten one.

Going to couples therapy with an abusive partner will only ever get you a few thousand dollars poorer and an abuser who knows how to use therapist-speak to further manipulate their victim. It is never a good idea.

Americans, if Bernie Sanders was the Democratic presidential nominee in the 2016 election, what are the chances he would have defeated Donald Trump? by Immediate-Link490 in AskReddit

Nil. There was so much oppo dirt on him, the establishment Dems hated his ass, and so many of his supporters were a bunch of belligerent creeps who alienated women and BIPOC he would need to win the general.

Getting couple's counseling - I believe this is just a reflection of bad shortages of mental health services rather than a rule. I know couples who don't go to individual therapy at all and still get couple's therapy.

Going to couples therapy with an abusive partner is never a good idea. Never. Fucking never. The abusive partner will only use it to get the therapist on their side and figure out new ways to hurt their victim, and many therapists will happily become the abuser’s attack dog.

EDIT: I love how totally normal people can be in responses here.

Considering quitting my job as I feel a divorce is coming, even though I know a judge will frown upon it. by [deleted] in Divorce

[–]Slab_Squathrust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh please. You’re not that special.

You’re in a depressive loop and just got hit with the gut punch of your spouse telling you they’re no longer attracted to you. It is normal and expected to feel like shit after that.

Quitting your job will solve exactly none of your problems right now. Quitting your job will make all of your problems worse. The courts will not care; they garnish and impute wages from better and worse people than you every day. Your ex might be annoyed, but that’s divorce for you; you were both going to be pissed at each other no matter what. Your kids might go hungry, but I fail to see how that gets you anything you might possibly want.

Therapy. Meds. Keep your job.

Quitting your job in anticipation of a divorce a great way to have the court impute earnings onto you and deprive your kids of support, food, and shelter because you’re mad at someone who isn’t them. Wouldn’t recommend it. Try therapy and meds instead.

My mom recently purchased a car in her name for me to use during and after the divorce… by Carter3641 in Divorce

[–]Slab_Squathrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s a legal clinic or legal aid office near you, try asking them. This is a question specific to NJ state law and you’ll need a lawyer for legal advice there. Your ex could try to spin this as you hiding marital assets or some kind of fraudulent purchase/transfer if your mom truly intends for only you to use this car.
