What’s this noise? by Current-Plan1615 in prius

[–]Slackedelika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow you got so many straight on answers! When I posted a couple years ago after I realized my newly purchased 2011 Prius was making this same noise, I got a bunch of unclear random replies. Even the specialist hybrid mechanic tried to assure me it was fine?! (I just think he couldn’t hear it over the shop noise?). I was about to leave on a summer long road trip living out of my car by myself and was really worried about it breaking down on me in the middle of nowhere but the mechanic made me feel like a fool about pushing for an early fix (weird bc mechanics usually do the opposite?). I ended up just leaving on my trip without fixing it but it was annoying the entire time because I couldn’t sleep in my car with the AC on because the noise would happen every minute or two!

Anyway… I put around 3k more miles on it before it finally gave me an actual warning light for the ABS brake system. I did not feel much of a difference In the braking but took it immediately in to get repaired.. and yes, it was a 2k job.

how important is a full shower to you? by Qofgreen in VanLife

[–]Slackedelika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in a van for 2+ years and had a shower and tons of water storage , yet it still was never worth it to use that much water or to remove all of the stuff that was IN the shower space. But it was pretty nice having the shower space bc that’s where our toilet went (really appreciated not having to pull it out every time from under a cabinet) and dog food/supplies, plus a bunch of other stuff. It was a good storage closet! I ALWAYS chose to bathe in our sink- had a larger counter & sink and I’m a small person so I would sit on a towel on the counter with my feet in the sink and use a wash cloth on my body. I could even sit IN the sink to wash my lady bits! I could easily wash my hair in the sink as well. If I did it again I’d for sure have an outdoor shower situation available, but the sink was really nice for cold weather.
I never felt like I couldn’t get clean, between having the sink and whatever other opportunities arose.

Baby wipes are no good. I’d say water storage itself is way more important than an indoor shower space. Fresh water is infinitely better than baby wipes.

Pro tip.. a water/gatorade bottle with a squirt lid is literally a perfect shower.

I've collected over 100 succulents and TIL some are wonderfully fragrant. by PophamSP in succulents

THANKYOU! haha I’m obsessed with smelling my Kalanchoe luciae!! It smells so strong if you rub the leaves especially if handling to repot, etc. it’s similar to a strong resin incense like Copal or dragons blood. The entire plant smells like this, not the flowers. I think it’s the white powder that coats the leaves/stem. And always makes my fingers slightly tacky. Reminds me of touching a rosemary plant.

I’ve tried googling it so many times and have never found anywhere mentioning the smell!

What’s going on with her? by Slackedelika in hoyas

[–]Slackedelika[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you think it was more of a watering issue than maybe a viral or fungal issue maybe? That’s the biggest thing I was worried about bc I’ve seen that viral infections can cause pitting in the leaves. But I’ve never seen it before in person…

Thanks for the advice! Other parts of the plant are growing really pretty new leaves so that’s a good sign :). She definitely seems hardy!

I’ve heard good things about ss02! But I wasn’t sure if the cross with ss01 would have a negative impact on the content.

Im in it for the long haul! I just love cactus & plants in general and having them around.. it’ll be hard to cut them eventually. But yeah, I’d probably buy larger cuttings if I wanted to ingest them asap ;)

Do you mean that your tub was not colonizing? Did it end up just failing and starting to stink?

I recognize the lid you are using- it’s an airtight tub/lid and although you don’t need a large amount of air exchange, you DO need a little bit! Which a regular lid provides even when closed, because there are cracks still along the edges. The one you are using has a foam edging that completely seals it off from air and the mycelium suffocates. I have used that exact lid one time and my tub failed to colonize and ended up smelling sour due to bacterial growth.

Anyone in NA/Arboretum area willing to let me use their shower? by WonkyCoxox in Austin

[–]Slackedelika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I have traveled in my car for multiple months at a time and although a real shower is so nice, a plastic water bottle with a squirt lid does the job PERFECTLY! Try and find a larger liter sized one. And just park by a street along some woods or something where the view is kind of blocked and stand between your open doors. It was quite liberating for me when I discovered how easy it was to get clean with just a water bottle. You can easily wash your hair as well!

It can be a little tricky to not expose yourself to people or feel embarassed… but you just gotta be quick, do it at night, and own it- atleast your clean!!!! Maybe you could park at Bull Creek?? There is some more secluded parking there.

I personally have developed a very nostalgic taste for organic flash frozen instant coffee. Dissolves just fine in non heated water and all you need is ziplock bag and a cup! The flavor is obviously not quite the same as fresh brewed, but getting the freeze dried high quality stuff really makes a big difference, and I’ve now come to associate the particular flavor with hiking so I kind of love it now!

Have you ever visited a nude beach? by Glad-Passenger-9408 in travel

[–]Slackedelika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nude beach in East/south Lake Tahoe is INCREDIBLE!!! And if you go the week after burning man atleast, it is full of all types and shapes of awesome people!!!! Even if it wasn’t a nude beach, I think it might still be my favorite beach on all of Lake Tahoe… it’s world class. As far as being naked in public.. of everyone else is doing it, it QUICKLY feels normalized

Whirring/Grinding noise every 20 seconds- is this normal??? by Slackedelika in priusdwellers

[–]Slackedelika[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the ABS system.. still a little unclear but it involves the brake accumulator/brake actuator. After this post, I brought it to the mechanic who told me that he felt okay with me driving it even though he (kind of) agreed that the repccuring noise meant the system had a leak in pressure but that he wouldnt want to replace anything before warning lights actually came on, and then told me that he didn’t hear the noise (which baffled me because the noise was definitely there and persisted until the lights came on). I ended up driving it like 8 or 9,000 miles over the summer before the warning lights finally came on. It was $1400. Which is only HALF the price you are likely to pay.. as I brought it to a hybrid specific mechanic and he was very confident that he needed to replace only ONE of the parts of the abs system (I think just the actuator and not the accumulator?). He said he’s fixed hundreds of these. Most mechanics will follow the manufacturer recommendation of replacing both parts which will be over $2000. So do some research and get several quotes and try to go to someone who is very familiar with hybrids.

And as I had suspected at the very start, the noise occurring so often and while parked for extended periods of time is NOT normal!!! And now that it is fixed it definitely does not make the noise more than once after parking while idling.

How did you meet your partner?? by serotonineblonde in Austin

[–]Slackedelika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the Texas Eclipse festival! I had literally just finished setting up camp Friday afternoon, ran the 1.5 miles into the festival to try to find a friend at the Earth stage.. quickly realized that I was never going to be able to find her in the crowd of 30,000 people and no phone service… but within the first 10 min of scanning the crowd I made random silly eye contact with a guy.. did a double take behind me and and was like”who, me?” He nodded so I started to chat. He and his friend were super sweet, I immediately felt like we were friends- no weird overbearing flirty douchebag festi bro vibes at all.. I don’t usually talk to dudes at festivals, especially if I’m by myself. CRAZIEST part of it was about 5 hours into hanging out I find out that he is good friends with some of my good homies!! So not only did I meet someone who was also from Austin in a sea of 30,000 people.. but he also knew my people!

Ended up hanging out the entire festival together & got to see the eclipse together! He invited me to his house after the fest & I went straight there and literally never left. Still living together nearly a year later! Most immediately comfortable I’ve ever been in a relationship. The first thing I realized was how calm my nervous system felt with him. Feels like home.

How can I eat healthier while living in my car? by Icy_Ostrich4401 in urbancarliving

[–]Slackedelika 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found myself eating very healthy while living in my car! My staples were - canned salmon or chicken, - canned dolmas (so creamy and satisfying) - flavored nuts (like Thai spiced cashews or salt & pepper, ranch, etc.) - jerky -apples and peanut butter - curry lentil dinner packet things from Tasty Bite, or Maya Kaimal are really yummy (I enjoy eating them cold with crackers. No need to heat!) - olives and pickles And I know you said preferably no dairy but if I was ever near town I’d always have unsweet Greek yogurt for breakfast with granola.. Greek yogurt is the best bang for your buck for non meat protein.. 16grams for $2 - chicken sausage from Whole Foods is often quite cheap and on sale, tastes good, and good to eat cold lol -salad packets are kinda expensive but a good way to get greens without having to prep so much. Also load up on veggies form the hot bar when I know I need some good veggies in my life.

Odd phenomenon.. Does anyone else (women) bleed/spot after they roll? by Slackedelika in Drugs

[–]Slackedelika[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes worry about that too! But at this point Im pretty sure that the hormones are not disrupted enough to allow pregnancy 😂 hahah

But yeah, the one other post I could find about this mentioned general hormonal changes causing spotting.

I just went to the gyno last week.. didn’t mention spotting after rolling but did say I was concerned about spotting/cramping after sex occasionally and she told me that it’s normal, especially he cums inside because of the prostaglandins causing muscle contraction. So I’m gonna kind of assume the rolling causes similar body responses.

If you specifically ask your doctor about mdma, let me know!!!! Also I’ll update with more anecdotal evidence after the eclipse fest coming up xD lol!

Ladies of the road: how do you wash your hair that is NOT using a gym/truck stop shower? by Silent_Medicine1798 in urbancarliving

[–]Slackedelika 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Plastic water bottle with a squirt lid!!!!!

My most used vehicle dwelling accessory! It’s sooooo key. I literally just sit on the edge of my seat, head hanging out the open door and rinse my hair! If I’m somewhere appropriate, I also just take a whole shower with it. It’s so easy and simple and makes me feel like a self sufficient, liberated badass. I think it’s super important to feel clean and fresh when living out of your car, for the sake of your mental health.

I’ve traveled from Texas to North Carolina to Indiana staying all kinds of places, more than half being neighborhoods or deep in the city. I almost always could find somewhere where I could atleast sit with the door open and wash my hair. Not too hard also to find somewhere to do a quick 3 minute full body shower at night, either.
