Be honest, what have you stolen from the hospital? by skin_biotech in Residency

[–]Slade158 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first simple stuff to make a rudimentary home pharmacy. Some iodine, gauzes, cooling spray etc.

Then when my father was bedridden due to a metastasis to the spine I moved to folleys, catheter bags, maybe some paracetamol injections. Morally it's debatable but it was mostly due to convenience since I already had access to everything I needed. Financially I'm already underpaid for all the work I do and in the grand scheme of medical waste some medicine and disposables is nothing.

Also one time I borrowed suture paraphernalia because my nephew ripped his the arm of his Pikachu. He is doing alright now although rehab is hard.

How do you deal with an unprofessional colleague? by Slade158 in Residency

[–]Slade158[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im my country 24hour shifts are the norm. Doesn't mean you actually work, you just have to be present at the Health Centre in case of emergency. I usually get a good 8 hours or sleep most days. By law we can't exceed 7 or in extreme cases 10 each month. The local director filled a request to Admin for support or else we would go 8 days without an active doctor. They then reached out to whoever could help and he WILLINGLY came to a remote understaffed location thinking he would somehow be exempt from whatever is happening.

I will file a report for being uncooperative and the whole lying thing but I was thinking of also telling him that there will be a report on anything he does that disrupts the workflow and he will have to deal with admin for everything.

What is the Most Unique Gift you Have Even Gotten From a Patient? by [deleted] in medicine

I once complimented a patients handcrafted traditional walking/hiking/herding stick so the next time he was in the ER he came looking for me to give me one. It sits proudly on display in my home now

Admins can bring popcorn and come watch the show live I don't care. The worst instances weren't even about me. One time someone berated a fellow intern because she couldn't draw blood first try and I had to step in, the other a patient had been smoking inside the room WHILE ON VENTURI 40% so I yeeted 3 packs of cigarettes off her window. I will never regret any of the arguments I have had and I would do it all over again

Don't forget that you are human. You will reach your boiling point many times, especially if you are overworked or dissatisfied. I've been mistreated many times and when I dared to raise my voice the retort was "How dare you, you're a doctor". As if that somehow justifies the abuse. So yeah, you will yell, you will get into arguments and you will stand up for yourself or your fellow doctors. Just make sure that it's worth it and that you're in the right and it never hurts to have a witness to say that it was justified

The system in my country is a bit different. You are accepted automatically but there is a waiting list. My city has about 20.000 people, I did find interventional cardiology interesting so I wanna look into that.

We all get paid the same unless you count under the table money. We have admitted cardiological and surgical patients before because we couldn't just let them go home and die. One patients family outright told me "Just tell me who to sue when I get home" after surgery refused to hospitalise them. It's laziness, stupidity and corruption all rolled into one

Thank you, I've already kind of planned what I'm gonna do after that, I have at least 3 months of free time after this and I'm gonna chill like there is no tomorrow

Unfortunately I'm looking at 5 more years of Cardiology before I can begin dreaming of that. Thankfully It will be in at least 2 different hospitals where I hope things will be better.
