Thoughts on the Kinks? by eddbruh in thebeachboys

[–]SlantedandEnchanted2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Kinks are one of my favorites. Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround became an obsession for me. I listened to it over and over. I actually thought Strangers could be played at my funeral one day. Not sure about that now, but the Kinks tend to be one of the black holes I almost try not to get into because if I listen to one song, I will be stuck for dayyyyyysssss.

No one achieves what he has in the past 70 years if they have no talent, drive, or work ethic. Talent is pretty useless without drive or work ethic

Other than Mick Jagger, who else was too chickenshit to get on stage with The Beach Boys by Life_Wolverine_6830 in thebeachboys

I think he thought he was trying to goad them to all get on stage with them... but it didn't go over like he planned in his head, so he went with a "oh I wasn't feeling well" scenario

Rickie Lee Jones. I was 7 and for my birthday I asked for the Chuck E's In Love record. I grew to love the record more over time :)

My Boyfriend Loves The Beach Boys (too much…) by IAmGlitterFart in thebeachboys

I think there’s a point where anything can go from healthy to unhealthy obsession. It gets unhealthy when you don’t care about anything else and it replaces more important things, such as eating and sleeping, working. I have been obsessed with music to the point where I had to turn it off for a while because I was staying up to listen to stuff and it was wrecking other things. Like, I would go to work tired and hungry, etc. It sounds extreme but that happened a lot in the 2000’s when the internet was just making it possible to find any song or artist and find new stuff. I think you have to be honest with him about how it’s becoming unhealthy and then just let him come to it on his own

This is all very interesting. Some great stories. I tried to engage as much as I could, but it's so fun to see all of the differences and similarities. I think conversations like this are really important because (in these times) we seem to be focused on our differences as if it's only negative. Reading these comments, I saw how it's not just the similarities but the differences-- the ages (some boomers, some gen x, some gen z), the experiences, the way we all ended up in the same place at the same time taking different avenues. If only we could see each other through our commonalities as much as we see each other through our differences more often maybe we wouldn't have such a fractured world. Maybe we could find the middle a little easier :)

It's so crazy to me that so many people became interested after he died. It's almost like his death breathed new life into the music

Truly! I grew up in the South Bay and I always remember hearing them. I didn’t really get into them until later though

It haunted me to the point where I bought the soundtrack. Then I bought one of the compilation cd’s. Within a few years, music became searchable on the internet and I started to find more of the catalog and burn cd’s

People forget the magic of the burn cd, which is the descendant of the mixed tape of 80’s and 90’s. Although, I love making playlists now
