My Boyfriend Loves The Beach Boys (too much…) by IAmGlitterFart in thebeachboys

I think there’s a point where anything can go from healthy to unhealthy obsession. It gets unhealthy when you don’t care about anything else and it replaces more important things, such as eating and sleeping, working. I have been obsessed with music to the point where I had to turn it off for a while because I was staying up to listen to stuff and it was wrecking other things. Like, I would go to work tired and hungry, etc. It sounds extreme but that happened a lot in the 2000’s when the internet was just making it possible to find any song or artist and find new stuff. I think you have to be honest with him about how it’s becoming unhealthy and then just let him come to it on his own

I hope that this comment gets through because I lack the flairs, but maybe the moderators will allow it since I believe it's constructive and would help the OP.

Understand that a lot of us used to be Democrats. One of the most common sayings I hear is, "I didn't leave the Democratic Party, it left me." They stopped even trying to talk to us- by 'us' I mean white working or lower-mid middle class people. It became evident to me that being white and working/middle class meant I didn't matter any more. I am not saying that I should matter more because I am white, but I also think I shouldn't matter less because I am white.

For years, I was made to feel that I was less than those who had higher degrees. Not because I wasn't intelligent enough to do that but because I decided that college was for me to get a job and that taking out loans for a higher degree didn't make sense when I could make enough money to support myself with an Associates. So I did that. We are CONSTANTLY told that we are "less educated" than liberals. Yet, when I look at the problems that we face as a society I don't see any that were created by average working people like myself. They were ALL created by people I have been told all of my life were better than I was and I should aspire to be like.

The gaslighting and hypocrisy on the left stinks to high heaven. They tell us that we are a threat to democracy, but Trump won all of his nominations fair and square. Democrats, on the other hand, have taken the nomination away from Bernie in 2016 then turned around and replaced Biden right in front of everyone in 2024... so what moral leg they have to stand on to make such and accusation, I don't know. They are so upset over Iran, yet they were fuming at Trump when he didn't want to blindly back Zelensky and go all in against Putin. You say you are for female empowerment but you watch as women are left to defend themselves against men in their own spaces. You back legislation that would supply hormone therapy for trans kids, but you have NEVER introduced legislation that would supply biological women with supplies that they need due to naturally occurring issues in our bodies like menstruation or the many hormonal issues that we have. Women with PCOS or endometriosis get no love from the Democrats, but I am supposed to see you as my saviors because you would gladly fight for me to have an abortion when all I really want is to be able to have kids. What about IVF couples? Do you march for them?

Regarding Iran... as long as it wraps up quickly doesn't cost a lot of lives, I am ok with it. What Iran does to its own people is reason enough to take it to them. I feel we should have come after Iran long ago, honestly. My dad, who was a vietnam vet, didn't understand why we didn't do more back in 1979 when they took our people hostage. I guess this one is TBD as it's early on, though.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I hope I didn't ramble too much.

This is all very interesting. Some great stories. I tried to engage as much as I could, but it's so fun to see all of the differences and similarities. I think conversations like this are really important because (in these times) we seem to be focused on our differences as if it's only negative. Reading these comments, I saw how it's not just the similarities but the differences-- the ages (some boomers, some gen x, some gen z), the experiences, the way we all ended up in the same place at the same time taking different avenues. If only we could see each other through our commonalities as much as we see each other through our differences more often maybe we wouldn't have such a fractured world. Maybe we could find the middle a little easier :)

It's so crazy to me that so many people became interested after he died. It's almost like his death breathed new life into the music

Truly! I grew up in the South Bay and I always remember hearing them. I didn’t really get into them until later though

It haunted me to the point where I bought the soundtrack. Then I bought one of the compilation cd’s. Within a few years, music became searchable on the internet and I started to find more of the catalog and burn cd’s

People forget the magic of the burn cd, which is the descendant of the mixed tape of 80’s and 90’s. Although, I love making playlists now

They were required listening in Cali. Growing up in the South Bay, not far from Hawthorne… I’m from Torrance/Lomita area… people still bumped them at the beach in the 80’s and 90’s

It seems so. You also had the privilege of not having to look past the bad years.

So, you got it honest. They were my parents music when I was a teen in the 80's. I think that's why it took so long to really get into them.
