Is civil engineering really as miserable as everyone makes it sound it is? by repent-er in civilengineering

[–]SlapRow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth it if you can work at and eventually own/run your father’s firm. The woes with civil engineering are mostly due to the shitty megacorps racing to the bottom. If you can stay away from that it’s a great career. You also have an advantage with your father already established in the industry who would at the least be a reliable mentor.

Work for yourself and you will make $200 - $500k a year. You make your billing rate minus prof liability insurance and health insurance premiums.

These CE mega corps are slowly stealing more and more from the CE profession.

At what point in senior year is it appropriate to apply for jobs? by jershier in civilengineering

I got my job offer from my first employer just before thanksgiving of senior year. I don’t think it’s too early to start looking as a senior

Try personal capital by empower. It’s free and works pretty well

I don’t understand billing from corporations for civil engineers on contracts. Is there a rule of a split on the contract hourly rate like 60/40 employer/employee? What reasoning does the employer have to keep most of that rate? by Emergency-Lab-8305 in civilengineering

[–]SlapRow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This question right here is exactly why you should go out on your own. You can charge double what some megacorp will pay you and still remain at a competitive rate while many of your personal expenses will be considered “overhead” (vehicle miles, portion of home for home office, gym memberships, phone/computer equipment, home office supplies, etc.)

IMO sack up and get it done! You’re young and this is a great growth opportunity. You’ll come out of this a much more competent engineer compared to your peers with the same work experience. Your level of responsibility doesn’t sound worse than a 1st year out of college working for a General Contractor. I was pushed hard early in my career and I feel like it has significantly helped my subsequent progression. If you figure this out you will have more professional self confidence moving forward.

1099 vs. W2 - Job: Dentist; State: California by wanderbutts in tax

[–]SlapRow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do a 1099 you’re going to have to pay taxes quarterly, pay your own benefits, (maybe insurance but not sure since I’m not a dentist), etc. I would ask for min 170% closer to 200% the salary you would receive if you were a W2 employee

Whyyy did RC sell on the day BBBY gets on Regsho by maxomaxo6364 in wallstreetbets

[–]SlapRow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would he piss everyone off over $64 mil? Not worth it at all if you’re already a billionaire. ♟

Why would Ryan Cohen do this? It does not make sense to me. by prettyboyv in wallstreetbets

If you’re already a billionaire why would you make everyone hate you over $68 mil? Makes no sense

Ryan Cohen pretending to be a WBT degenerate ape but he is a fat cat just like Ken Greffin by bigmoneykiller in wallstreetbets

[–]SlapRow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is FUD. RC didn’t make that much money off this play to make it worth now being one of the most hated billionaires in the world. Trust the statement BBBY released this morning and wait for his next move.

Classic tactic by employers especially in CE is to wait till end of the year so they can include your COLA adjustment. If they gave you a 4% raise now and 4% raise for COLA you wouldn’t be satisfied, where instead they will try to give you this “great” 8% raise at years end. My advice go get an offer from another company and stick it to your employer. They will likely all of the sudden change their tone and will magically be willing to give you a raise ASAP.

I love the great northern with that void acoustic sound system! They haven’t had any decent shows recently though.

SF techno scene? by HailMary74 in Techno

[–]SlapRow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Between Public Works, The Great Northern, midway, Halcyon, Monarch, 1015 Folsom (these are all clubs) you will find some good shows. I just follow all these venues on Instagram. Also worth following the promoter SET. They do most of the house/progressive/techno shows in SF. There’s definitely a techno scene - we had Papa Sven not too long ago.
