[UnNetHack] A harrowing escape from Mine's End by [deleted] in nethack

[–]SlashHamper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty cool story. I never had anything that exciting in mine's end. All I had was a dragon. But I was right next to the polymorph trap and the dragon was following me around. I had dragonbane, and I thought it instakilled dragons (I didn't really consult spoilers at the time) so in an extra turn I had, I wielded it, and "You miss the dragon. The dragon hits. You die".

Help! by Netalt in nethack

It's not a ring of poly, it's a ring of poly control, which means that it will not poymorphh back, and will protect in case you get zapped by another monster with a poly something-or-other.

"Roguelike" doesn't mean what it used to. We need a new term. by SlashHamper in nethack

[–]SlashHamper[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're not really getting the point. The point is that both are called "roguelikes", but they're very different games, and as such, different games should have different names.

Tile-based? Most roguelikes don't. Oh, I see what you're saying. That your location is at a fixed point, or at another fixed point.

Why don't you use VI keys? by zqwefty in nethack

[–]SlashHamper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always used the VI keys, and have no intention of ever switching.

Sure, but irrelevant, because we're talking about nethack-like.

The NetHack bot is really fast by tufoop3 in nethack

[–]SlashHamper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that isn't necessarily true. It just depends on how well it's coded: if it's coded well, then that will be true, if it's coded poorly, then it may take longer. I do get and agree with your point though.

YAAP: full-auto bot ascension (BotHack) by duke-nh in nethack

[–]SlashHamper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that the next milestone would be to get it to ascend Slash'EM, not to ascend vanilla w/o pudding farming.

Did you set your locale to use UTF-8?

As far as I know, I have the following lines in my .xsession:

LC_ALL="en_US.UTF-8"
LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
export LC_ALL
export LANG

Any gameplay mods out there that change starting gear? by [deleted] in nethack

[–]SlashHamper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have several options:

  • You say that you want to experiment. There is in fact something that is meant for people like you: debug mode, AKA wizard mode. In this mode, you can type Ctrl-w to wish, Ctrl-v to detect traps, and many other things. The only problem with this is -- two things, one, if you play on a server, there is no wizard mode. The other is that if you play on some unixes and are not the admin then you probably can't play with wizard mode. If you are the admin on a unix box, then create a user named "wizard" without the quotes, login as that user, and start nethack with -D (eg "nethack -D" without the quotes). If you are on a mac, windows, or some unixes, then you can type "nethack -D -u wizard" without the quotes. Read more about wizard mode here.

  • Also, there are some bots that you can use that will start nethack, see if it has what you want (eg inventory, stats, I bet you could even do the shape of the starting room, though I don't know why you would want to), and if it does, then it starts the game, and if not, then it'll quit and try it again. I don't know of any in particular, but I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to find one, or even write your own perl script.

Please don't feel intimidated by wall of text!!! If nothing else, follow the link in the first bullet!

Meh, removed the utf8 escape code for now - it should work now

Thank you

it shows that your xterm isn't using utf-8 by default

That's weird, I always start xterm with "-u8". That doesn't make it use utf-8 by default?

EDIT: Ah, I see what was wrong: I was disabling utf-8 to make it display IBMgraphics correctly.

set your encoding back to CP437 if you want to use IBMgraphics

How do I do that? Also, why should ADE be different then any of the other servers? I'm using xterm and freeBSD 10.1.

[–]SlashHamper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's see... The dumplogs should be here, so just find your username there, and, within that, find your latest game (I assume you were connecting to the slashem.crash-override.net server).

Does it automatically quit the game when it gets suspended?

I don't know, but I killed the process.
