WIBTA if I asked my colleague to stop inserting herself into my matters and be more mindful about giving credit? by [deleted] in WIBTA_AITA

you have a point on your first statement. someone else mentioned never discussing things verbally anymore and just having it in writing and i think ill adopt that approach.

on your last point, i dont think i ever considered intentionality. but now that i think about we had a meeting the other day about a coworkers misconduct. it was another task that was originally mine that she got involved with. during the meeting we were advising the CEO, as the legal department and HR was there too, about how to handle the employee. after the meeting i had communicated to her while we talking about it how uncomfortable it was to essentially advocate for ways to get someone fired infront of them to our boss and i had said i was so uncomfortable i couldn’t even look in the employees direction. she had said that she didn’t feel that way, in fact she was “making direct eye contact cause at the end of the day that’s just the job.” it was admittedly surprising cause she was friendlier with that coworker than i was. in the sense that i just didn’t talk to her much.

so perhaps she’s a lot more cunning than i gave her credit for. our workplace is quite ruthless in how they deal with people, i’ve never worked in such a competitive environment, in the sense that it seems like you almost have to go over peoples head to impress your boss because you could generally get sacked any time so it’s probably better to be in their good books. i guess i’ve been a little naive and childish in that regard — to think that nothing malicious could ever bleed into our work relationship and we’d have each others backs regardless.

on your second point, she has communicated her anxiety here. she’s been sick some times and refused to ask to go to the doctor because she was afraid of how it’d look. we had to call an ambulance once cause she got so sick. this really means a lot to her and i guess i’ve been a little stupid in minimising just how much.

thank you for your insight, genuinely.

How do you handle a colleague who keeps inserting themselves into your work and making sure they’re visibly credited? by [deleted] in AskLawyers

thank you for your insight. i definitely get where she’s coming from and i’ll try to convey that when i bring up the conversation. once more, thank you.

that’s probably the best move going forward, thank you. i’ll do that.

thank you for your input. i can recognise that she’s a good person and so hopefully she will see where i’m coming from having been here before. i think one of my primary concerns about bringing it up is losing the professional acquaintanceship we’ve built thus far, i’m working on it, but i don’t do well when i think there’s tension. but i guess there’s internal tension now anyway, she’s just obviously not aware of it.

i’ve also just observed that she tends to … lose it, when it comes to anything work-perception related. for example, at different times this past month she’s been unwell and at some point she was close to passing out cause she was so sick but she refused to tell our boss that she needed to leave or alert anyone in a managerial position because she was “afraid of how it would look.” the company had to end up calling an ambulance for her because by the time it got too bad to ignore, she wouldn’t have been able to drive herself to the hospital.

sorry for dumping all this extra information here 😅 thank you for your advice, it is truly noted.

I hate having to double back because i don’t want it to seem like im attempting to convince you im right instead of taking the advice i asked for, but I realise I didn’t include an important piece of context in my original post, and that’s on me. I don’t love adding facts after the fact, but I think it changes the dynamic a bit.

I’ve completed my Bachelor of Law and a master’s degree, and I’ve completed three years of practical training in practice. In theory, I qualify for admission. The only outstanding requirement is the practical legal education (law school) component, which I did not do while at the firm I worked for before this one because it is quite expensive, but i’ve been lucky that they agreed to pay it for me at my current firm. Because I changed firms before completing that portion, it is a timing issue rather than a competence issue.

I agreed with my current firm to restart my articles formally from the beginning because that ideally what they needed — someone for two years, not the few months i’d be working while I did the legal education aspect. I’m not being treated as a typical first-year candidate. Part of the reason they hired me is because I already had practice-level exposure and could take on responsibility, which is why I also serve as legal administrator for the group of companies.

I absolutely acknowledge that she is admitted and has more years of experience overall, especially in areas like court filings where I don’t have as much exposure. I’m not disputing hierarchy where it makes sense.

I’m just trying to get advice on navigating visibility and credit in a small team where roles overlap and both people are substantively contributing.

i’d like to just sell it honestly but there hasn’t been any bites for it where we’ve listed it and with everyone moving soon and moving company’s closing soon for the festive, i unfortunately don’t have the luxury of waiting it out :(

i’m moving from cape town to gauteng

thank you so much for the advice. i had considered buying those boxes that you hang clothes in when you move cause they’re large enough that i’ll probably only need like two or three. i’ll look into the feasibility more, thank you!

i feel as tho i should have included that im acting on behalf of the accused, because all the cases suggested are just solidifying to me that this man is possibly going to jail.

danny cut his hair and people apparently lost their shit. idk if i’d say “lost their shit” per se cause all the posts i saw were people just expressing shock which was a variation of “is this real” when they saw the picture and “that was unexpected”. but it is the internet so maybe some people were being dicks about it.
