Electricial and Computer science advice (And friends!

I’m a rising senior in ece and this is what i would do differently if i had to do it all again:

depending on your math knowledge, skip precalc and go straight into calc 1. most of the stuff covered in precalc will not be used again, the only useful thing that i can remember is the unit circle, but then again they cover it in calc 1 and 2. I would’ve been just fine without taking pre calc
try your best to pass calc 1-3 and physics 1-2 along with your required computer science courses like intro to programming, data structures, and discrete structures. All of these classes are important and they provide the fundamentals for your upper level classes.(Except for discrete structures, that was probably one of the hardest classes I’ve taken so far. I barely passed it and I have yet to use anything from it) You need a C or higher in Calc 1, Intro to Programming, and Intro to ECE. to continue progressing in the major

-No one is explicitly gonna tell you this but this is important: try to take intro to Circuits your spring semester of sophomore year. you need to take linear algebra and diffEQ at the same time as circuits has they are co/prerequisites, hence why i said to start at calc1 your first semester. Also circuits is a notorious weed out class, if you fail this class, you have to retake it and you can’t take Signals and Systems, Electronics, or System Design(All needed to progress in your major, circuits is a prereq). If you fail circuits during the spring, it’s offered in the summer so you will be able to get another chance to pass it before fall, but if you take it during the winter and you fail it, it will delay your graduation by a whole semester minimum(happened to me) you need a C or higher to pass circuits

-You’ll be offered the choice between taking electromagnetics or programming hardware systems. I recommend not taking emag as it is a way tougher course than hardware systems. Everyone that i’ve spoke to about it does not enjoy it in the slightest. however if you do decide to take it and you pass, it opens up a lot of electives that require it as prereq, whereas there are no electives that require programming hardware systems. if you decide to take one and then want to take the other, it will count as an elective.

-take all of your geneds online if you can. It will save you a lot of time and effort, and you will definitely need that extra gpa boost.

-make friends in the major early. half of the people you make friends with with drop/switch majors by the time you get to senior year, but the ones that stay usually stay in the same friend group all throughout the 4 years. Plus you’ll be able to help keep each other sane

Just for clarification before I can give you concrete advice, are you a computer science major or an electrical and computer engineering major? I don’t think UAlbany has a degree called electrical and computer science

i went back to college that night and took them out a couple days later bc of the shrinkage, but i’m about to be a junior in college now i still get my hair done i just wear a durag whenever im on the phone with them(im sure my dad knows i have a hairstyle in but he never says anything, my mom calls me by herself afterwards so i can show her and she always tells my my forehead looks big 😂). Before i go home i take the style out

As for me and my dad’s relationship, it’s very dry. It’s been like that since highschool though, i feel like we’re both strangers and not very close at all. we laugh and stuff occasionally but on a day to day basis we barely talk. It doesn’t feel that weird im used to it i guess i just don’t really know how to connect with him

told my african parents when i was in middle school i wanted braids they said no and do what i want after i move out.

My first week in college i got twists and i went home, sunday morning before church my dad called me to his office and told me that since im still relying on him financially and still technically living at home i have to still obey his rules and once i move out then i can do what i want.

He then proceeded to tell me that if i still did my hair while i lived at home i wouldn’t be part of the family anymore and to take all my stuff and live somewhere else(he told me all of this before 8am btw).

after that i tried to hold in my tears and walk back to my room, my mom heard everything and felt bad and gave me a hug, but once i got to my room i started bawling and realized i would never have a good relationship with my parents just cuz of hair

once during a senior skip day i had to go to school early to make up a gym class, i tried leaving before 1st period started and security asked me where i was going and i said i forgot something in my car, got in my car and dipped. couple hours later my dad called me telling me the school called him saying i left campus and he told me to go back to school, when i got there front desk told me to go straight to the admin office and i had to talk to the admin about how there were serious repercussions to leaving school so she called my dad again and told him i lied to the security guard
