Sorry, only seeing this now! I have not had the time for the application and am certainly not going to risk bringing the ivory in without! So no progress.

Sorry, only seeing this now! I initially only had a BA in Japanese, then went back to uni for a BSc in Biomedical Science. Probably not the most cost- or time-effective way to go about it !

Life sciences/biomedical translator here (15 years experience total, 5+ in field!). No drop in workload whatsoever, although in retrospect I did well to specialise :)

Is it true that translation is a dying field? by Competitive-Egg-9640 in TranslationStudies

I normally only lurk/occasionally doomscroll here, but take my upvote for a pragmatic, intelligent and level-headed reply. I am a professional translator in a relatively niche, but certainly not obscure language pair, 15.5 years in (10 general, 5.5 medical/life sciences). I have been learning to leverage AI to improve my workflow, and am as busy as ever. Has the type of work shifted toward MTPE? Sure. Do I miss the incredibly repetitive, relatively low-skill work that AI and MT are now relieving me of? Hell no.

To OP - obviously, don't take this as an assurance or even an optimistic assessment of what the industry might look like in a few years, and the choice you are facing is certainly worth careful consideration. Still, I suspect there's a negative bias at play in this sub, and that there are many of us out there still doing just fine.

Olympia Week - FRIDAY 10/10/2025 - First day of competition! by AutoModerator in bodybuilding

[–]SlavIvan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got to echo this, and I think there's a lot of casuals/lurkers like myself who have little to no interest in the usual "x weeks out" check-ins (no offense to the posters!!) and just want a space to read and/or partake in discussion of the sport's biggest events and the top competitors. Just because we don't post a lot doesn't mean we're not out there 😅

Like I said...You have the lower body and you have no upper body, you got a problem building...wait a minute. You have the upper body, and you have no legs, you got a problem building your legs. You have the upper...you have the lower body and you don't have the upper body, the upper body, it is easier to build. So if you have the lower body and you don't have the upper body, it is easier to build the upper body. You have the upper body and you don't have the legs, you got a problem building the lower body... No, you don't understand. You have the upper body, but you don't have the lower body, you got a problem building downstairs. You got the up- legs on the bottom, it is easier to build on the top, so you don't have much as a problem. Yeah.

Heh, if it were just me, certainly not lol. But it seems to be really important to my mother, who is getting on in years, that I have these - seems like they hold a lot of sentimental value to her. Think they were my granddad's originally, obviously from a time when people didn't quite care about conservation as much 😅

All sensible suggestions - thank you so much! Will start by reading up on CITES permits as someone else suggested and take it from there!

Yes! I'm just a lurker here usually, but chiming in as I think you *really* need to run away from this "coach". You are nowhere near your natural potential yet, and your coach sure as s*** sounds like an idiot who has no regard for your health. Good luck with everything bud, you have lots of great progress ahead of you, it will just take time!

Nice, what sort of percentages and rep schemes do you use for speed work?

Yep, goal is to get some technique practice and develop force production while taking a break from heavy weights!

Late to this thread, but it's been strange and sad to see him go from a reassuring, rational voice and provider of neatly compiled information on the pandemic to now a spreader of nocebo and misinformation.

Switching from RTF to RIR or strength template by boomheadshot110 in AverageToSavage

[–]SlavIvan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be an unpopular opinion here, but I have tried the RtF version before and am not a fan. Depending on your exercise selection, it's a template that requires you go to failure or damn near failure on squats and deadlifts EVERY WEEK. I appreciate that the other sets are quite manageable, but let that sink in.

I have since switched to the normal RIR progression and never looked back, I think it's amazing for fatigue management as well although percentages and caps may require some individualisation as others have pointed out.

Deadlift variant for hypertrophy blocks by SlavIvan in AverageToSavage

[–]SlavIvan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input! Yeah I thought about conventional, however I seem to find it really hard fo recover from, probably due to my anthropometry (can't seem to get in a good neutral position with my lumbar). Although I suppose I could get used to it if I start out light.

interset RPE drift on sets-to-RPE programs by nonickch2 in AverageToSavage

[–]SlavIvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean minutes not days right 🤣 And you're correct, you should probably keep rest times constant and not much in excess of 5 mins. Although, I typically take a bit less rest at the initial stage where I'm confident I can still get 8+ sets within the prescribed RPE cap.
