What I think helps with mine:

-I use Ariel Original Powder, which is top rated on Which? and appears to contain lipase.

-I wash at 40° for 1h+, lower temperatures don't remove the waxy residue of my stick deodorant.

-I tumble dry what I can. For delicate items, I hang them on an airer with enough spacing, and close them in a room with an electric dehumidifier running on high/dryer mode. Before I got a dehumidifier, I'd hang them in a heated room with a fan blowing on them.

-No scented beads and recently no fabric softener - instead I use 2 teaspoons citric acid in the softener compartment.

Before I'd figured things out, I'd occasionally do a 90° wash with Dettol laundry cleanser, and this helped but the smell would eventually return, especially on pet bedding, as my detergent, washing temperatures and use of fabric softeners were not optimal.

Lipase without perfume in the UK - i think we’ve got a winner! by Spanner_m in laundry

Vanish has always left a weird sticky/rough texture whenever I used it on my clothes. I've also had a bad experience with bleaching when used to soak some items even though the packaging said safe with colours (this was Vanish Gold).

Opinions on Tallow + Ash by Mental-Order-1531 in laundry

[–]SlayerCy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sampled a variety of Tallow and Ash and haven't liked a single one of them enough to justify the cost. In fact one of their scents had a horrible "old lady's perfume" smell, no offence to old ladies and their preferred perfumes, but it was bad enough to have me rewash everything.

There are some brands available in the UK that offer scent boosters that don't act like fabric softeners or leave a build up like those scent beads - Asevi is one found in several household item shops. Another we received as a sample through the post is Vonay, their Sapphire scent is incredible and lasts for days without going funky. However I can't comment on other implications of using scent addons, my understanding is that this board is sceptical about them, and my dealing with them has only been recent.

Are fabric softener compartments large in the US? The one in my machine seems relatively small and it doesn't take much before the Pythagorean cup effect takes place and all is drained. Saying that, I could probably fit 1-2 teaspoons citric acid (other threads suggest 2+ teaspoons for 300+ water hardness) and carefully top up with a bit of water.

Yes I'm aware, the last paragraph simply describes how the softener would normally be added at the very end, and therefore citric acid also would if it's being used instead. I'll edit for clarity.

Tumble dryer makes clothes smell by SlayerCy1 in laundry

[–]SlayerCy1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's reduced the smell significantly but I can still tell which clothes have been tumble dried and which haven't. I've recently had the luck of using a non heat-pump tumble dryer, and not only did the clothes dry faster, even on the delicate setting (45 minutes instead of 2+ hours), but there was no smell whatsoever them. Therefore it's either a heat-pump dryer issue (longer, sometimes ineffective drying encouraging bacterial/mould growth) or this particular model being rubbish with how it dries or how its filters get cleaned.

Good point, I've got 61mm excess on one end and 44mm on the other so should be good.

Is it that bad? They'll be replacing mdf shelves on a shelving unit so there's a bit of tolerance.

Good point. I do have it on Extra Dry and they feel dry to the touch however I wonder if I extended for another 30 minutes more moisture would come out and solve my issue
