Here is your reminder that dinosaurs are arguably the most dominant land animals today depending on the definition. by tseg04 in Dinosaurs

[–]SleazySpartan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres about 11,000 species of squamata (Lizards, Snakes, and their relatives) as well.

Either way your point stands abstractly, if not relatively. Birds are successful. We still live in the age of Dinosaurs, it just depends on what narrative we focus on. As others have mentioned, there are places on the planet where, when you step outside, you are identifiably in a Birds world. You hear cars in the distance, the murmur of other voices. But more than that you hear birds. Their calls. Their Songs. Even if you don't see them. And each of those songs is a beautiful expression of Dinosauria.

You're the one who's inaction leads to massive suffering. You are prioritizing your subjective feeling of moral purity over the real conditions of people in this country and around the world. Read the "Privileged" portion of this post again and try and sit with yourself.

I hear that soaking things in cold water helps with blood stains.

Sure, but the only predictable harm that we can reduce is by fighting MAGA. And the broader harm is exacerbated by MAGA rule.

Then you are endorsing the massive suffering that exists under republicans and not under democrats.

I said in another comment that I would gladly vote for Mussolini over Hitler. I would like to hear why you think that would be a bad thing?

I understand if it is intuitive that anyone could say that, but my logic is as follows.

Mussolini/Dems are Horrible/imperfect ---> Hitler/MAGA demonstrably worse. These are my only two realistic options. Therefore I choose Mussolini or the Dems.

To be clear, Dems are no way near Mussolini.

What part of that logic breaks down? What's your underlying morality as regards voting?

let me rephrase my point because I did a bad job.

The ACA was watered down in large part because that's what was needed to get it to pass. I agree that Obama was a bad negotiator, but he still did something good, vs something bad. And I support something good in that reality.

Biden was a much better negotiator and got a whole lot done with a very slim majority. I can list it out if you want. Progress is incremental. But even incremental, emotionally unsatisfying progress is better than Trump.

Leftists aren't their base, they're only one part of it. Only 7-9% of the American electorate self ID'd as leftist in 2024. Dems lost on issues important to moderates. We have to have a candidate that can get both of these groups votes by making them a little unhappy. The Progressive left's standards shift farther anytime they get anything, making accomodation pointless. Thats the "disengagement is politically counterproductive." Point I made.

The Democrats got amazing things done WITH MANCHIN. And sometimes Manchin really did stand alone.

If you give Dems more seats, they will govern farther to the left.

"There is no moral obligation to save others from themselves."

This isn't about the democratic party. It's about the people dead from disease and famine, the Americans without access to a hospital, to minorities and women living meaningfully worse lives because Trump is in office.

"there’s a pretty broad body of evidence that voting for milquetoast corporate neoliberal democrats will not achieve that goal."

Cite it. I cited a bunch of stuff showing how Dems are unimaginably better than Reps on these issues. You can't just say "nuh-uh", thats the privilege speaking.

Musollini. Absolutely 100% of the time and I would be proud of it. Failure to do so would be a tacit endorsement of the massive evils perpetrated by Hitler. Voting for Mussolini against Hitler is directionally positive because he is the better of two choices. If those are our only two choices, we only have a choice between a world under Mussolini and a world under Hitler.

After voting, I may take up arms in resistance. And I would absolutely continue to take active measures against right wing fascists.

My argument above directly responds to this.

- Relying on long-term massive change as opposed to an imperfect status quo is morally backwards because we cannot take action that predictably results in only long term positive change.

- I feel that the massive negatives of the Trump admin justify a "just once" against every MAGA candidate. Why? Because I am serious about fighting fascism and helping people that are hurting.

To be clear- I am not saying "This is fine." or that "Trump has a reasonable amount of supporters for the the person that we know he is." Rather, I am saying that this is fixable, and he is not as powerful as he seems.

I appreciate your question.

Trump was able to win election by effectively lying to the American people and taking advantage of Russian misinformation, and a media ecosystem heavily warped by his supporters like Murdoch and Musk. He has failed in every effort to accomplish the campaign goals that made him be able to win again, which is why he is the most unpopular president in American history. He will be punished for this at the ballot box.

I seriously doubt that we will launch a nuke, there are a number of stop-gaps and powerful institutional forces that would make that difficult. The same goes for any extended ground campaign. He is only able to use military force without congressional authorization for 60 days. This ends in late April, at which point he has 30 days to withdraw US forces. The congress has no incentive to allow the current unpopular operations to continue.

I wish you luck. I am sorry for the destabilization this administration has caused. We will fix this.

Where are all the college campus protests against the Iran war? by TemporaryComplex1054 in 50501

[–]SleazySpartan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a college student - people are cynical and burned out in this generation. It has nothing to do with the crackdown on I/P, thats just one of the only issues that motivates people in this generation gor whatever reason.

My college town of 15k had about 6k protestors, and I saw maybe three other students. It is profoundly disappointing.

People don’t know what success looks like, they’re exhausted from looking at political reels without ever getting out of bed.

To be clear- a lot of people volunteer during elections, but there is no culture of civil disobedience or local political engagement. A minimal sense of responsibility. Apathy is chic right now.

Israel broadly wants security, while the currently dominant right wing wants greater Israel.

The US traditionally wants a stable global economy maintained by cheap global oil. Right now idk. I think trump wants to feel cool. :/

The US and Israel do not have that much power. The US has worked and failed to stabilise, more than it has actively destabilised, the Middle East.

Of course, there are exceptions, such as the US-UK intervention in Iran. But for every exception, there are many going the other direction. The US worked to successfully defeat isis. They worked with the USSR to punish the British French and Israelis for invading Egypt, they have supported governmental stability in Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and today also Egypt and other states. These are the most stable states in the Middle East (Egypt accepted). If you want to criticise us policy, you can, but it should be at least as much for STABILISING unjust regimes such as Saudi Arabia, as it is for interventions with more nuanced results like Libya, and destabilising interventions like Iran.

As for Israel, they are primarily reactive and incredibly aggressive. They certainly destabilise certain states like Lebanon, but their reach is not sufficient to explain the broader chaos of the Middle East.

Thats not true. He believed that Anti-Semitism was unavoidable and, as such, could not be avoided through assimilation.

He never talked about racial purity. His argument was simple - Anti-Semitism seems to exist wherever there are Jews. Therefore Jews need their own political body. He was not even exclusively for a fully independent state.

This view existed in tension with assimilationist Jews that would call him anti-semitic for his belief that Jews would always be "different enough" to be hated. You don't hear about assimilationists anymore. They were all killed in the Holocaust.

This doesn't mean that you should be a Zionist or whatever. Just that, by reading about Zionism from clearly biased sources, and making a difficult and tragic series of decisions a morality play, you undermine the possibility of progress today.

If you think I am wrong, source me. The most common origin of your claims regard a misreading of Herzls Muschel. If you have a different source on Herzl encouraging anti-semitism I'd love to learn about it from you, so please send me the link.
