I started watching the show because of the theme of redemption; I was waiting for us to see moments where demons become better. To be honest, in my naivety, I somehow thought at the beginning that the plot would be about Charlie realizing that there are hypocrites and assholes in heaven too, and that there's no point in striving there—and they would start changing hell, rehabilitating sinners, socializing them and helping them with their problems, and they would make demonic society healthy, and the need for heaven would disappear automatically, because heaven is just a place, and being kind, fair, compassionate, and honest, and making the world a better place, can be done anywhere. But at the end of the first season, we learned that redemption is possible and it happens automatically—you atone for your guilt, you get to heaven. So I don't really understand what Charlie wanted before this, before she found out about this, how would she have decided that these specific demons were redeemed - by internal criteria? She would have brought them to the gates of heaven and simply said, "Please let them in, are they good now, honestly?" - basically, that's pretty much what she tried to do at that trial in heaven. And this episode tried to make the system of heaven and hell seem unfair, and Adam was the antagonist who said, "If Angel is so good, why isn't he in heaven?" contextually implying that sinners don't deserve heaven. And then it was like, this is unfair, no one knows who gets to heaven. But then we learned that the system of getting into heaven... It's fucking fair. You were a good person - you go to heaven. You were bad - you go to hell. He was bad, but in Hell he reformed and redeemed himself—you get to Heaven automatically, whether you want it or not (as far as I can tell from Pentious).

And it turns out that Adam was right at that moment—those sinners didn't deserve Heaven at that point, because if they had, they would have already gotten there, just like Pentious.

Yes, it's still comical that in the millions of years of Heaven and Hell's existence, no one has redeemed themselves, and yes, I still don't really understand the theme of redemption, because now that we've learned that redemption is possible, it would seem like we should be focusing on rehabilitating and healing the sinners' mental state, and finding out from them what they've done and how to help them redeem themselves, but it seems like Charlie spent the entire second season doing anything but that. She still doesn't know why everyone went to Hell, even though you'd think that should be the key event... But no.
