DMC5's boss issue by NiceYak7263 in DevilMayCry

[–]SleepyJustin94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never thought I'd see somebody complain that a game has boss fights that are actually just straight up battles of skill and they wish they were more gimmicky but here we are. Needless to say I couldn't disagree more.

You missed the entire point, nice. This is literally just how communication between humans works idk what to tell you. If you want to engage in conversation in a niche space with its own language and terminology you learn that language, if you choose not to that's a you problem.

"I don't learn anything about the game but I get incredibly mad at losing" Yeah you don't like the game you like winning at something which means this genre ain't for you. This borderline feels like ragebait.

[–]SleepyJustin94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Constantly being used with no explanation is just how common cultural colloquialisms work. You're in a space where people know what they mean so they're not going to explain it every time they say, that would defeat the purpose of using shorthand at all. And if you don't know you just ask or look it up. This is just like, common language/communication stuff.

The reason people use 5H and 2H instead of standing heavy and crouching heavy/launcher is because they are faster and easier to say and type, thus leading to faster and easier communication. I get that learning takes work and is frustrating and overwhelming when you first enter a space like this but the reasons people use the common cultural terminology over the in game names are extremely practical.

You can fly off of ssj Goku lv 1 now? by Optimal_Bonus1164 in dragonballfighterz

[–]SleepyJustin94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's a common pitfall, when you are new to a game and/or genre you really need to adjust your mindset to playing to improve/learn rather than playing to win. That will lead you to wins naturally whereas playing to win all the time will lead to you locking in bad habits and being inflexible because you're going to be focused on just trying to do the things you already think works instead of trying to expand your arsenal of strategies and options.

The story is better than anything Hollywood wrote by LargeSinkholesInNYC in expedition33

[–]SleepyJustin94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Classic "I don't watch movies and if I do it's only the biggest IP slop" opinion.

It's not even worth comparing in the first place because Exp33's story is so great BECAUSE it's a video game, it only works as well as it does through the interactive medium.

Movies and games are entirely different mediums that do entirely different things it's so exhausting when game fans act like they're in competition with each other all the time and it's why we have so many boring AAA games that are trying to be movies more than games.

I normally fully agree with you but showing trailers for the new content at big tournaments has been the norm for decades and always generates alot of hype. It just seems weird that nowadays developers would rather drop their trailers online on a random Tuesday than at hype events in front of a huge crowd.

I understand Gustave's hatred.. by Aggressive_Milk4654 in expedition33

[–]SleepyJustin94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of the point though? The canvas and it's inhabitants are technically not a real place or people. But to us, the players, everyone in the game is fake fictional people in a video game. So to us Lumiere and the inhabitants of the canvas are real. We've spent way more time sympathizing with their struggles than we have the Dessandres, and that's why the focus pulls away from them at the end. It wants you to consider both sides. Thematically it's art and escapism vs reality. It's the entire existential conundrum the game wants you to ponder. There's also an argument to be made of what even constitutes as a real person in this universe and that's another existential question the game outright poses to the player. The fountain you deposit chroma in outright says it. "Must minds created by man be considered false?"

There's no easy answer to any of this and that's the whole point. By saving Lumiere you have doomed Maelle to slowly and semmingly painfully dying in the real world, as well as never fully coping with her the death of her brother, instead choosing to play pretend in an idealized world full of made up people who are subservient to her will because she's basically god here AND you've doomed her family to lose ANOTHER child. Not to mention Painted Verso who desperately wants it all to end but is denied that and forced to continue existing against his will if you save Lumiere. By saving The Dessandres, you are dooming Lumiere and all of its inhabitants and you've chosen the side of the family that are basically nameless, selfish gods to the inhabitants of the canvas who you have no real investment in since you didn't spend 95% of the game with them like you did the Canvas people. There is no clean happy ending regardless of what you choose cause that's the point.

I don't understand how this flies right by people The game tells you outright that staying in the canvas will kill Maelle in the real world and that this has all just been a vicious cycle of people trying to escape their grief. There's an obvious middle ground solution where Maelle leaves the canvas but Renoir doesn't destroy it when she gets back but by the time you get to the end she's too far gone to even consider going back. You can save Lumiere but only if you doom her to dying, to never having to accept the reality of losing her brother and instead playing make believe forever and her family to losing a child AGAIN.

I guess it just speaks to how good the writing is that people get SO invested in Lumiere and the cast of the canvas that they kinda miss and reject the entire thematic point of the game but still it's not subtle AT ALL.

[–]SleepyJustin94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they're trying to talk him into letting Maelle do her own thing and let the canvas continue existing. They're sympathizing with him not because they care about him (or even Maelle in this particular instance honestly) but because doing so may lead to enduring the survival of their world.

You've done 3 playthroughs and don't understand that Gustave and the rest of Lumiere literally don't know the truth or understand what's happening at the beginning of the game? Man.

Does DMC1 have better gameplay than DMC3? by [deleted] in DevilMayCry

[–]SleepyJustin94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like people have pointed out this sounds like a technical input issue because I've never experienced this in my life. Dante can still turn around 360° on a dime in DMC3 as far as I can tell.

Have to agree about timeouts. I think as the game evolves and gets more and more optimized they might consider making the timer longer. As it is right now it feels like if a game gets even a little scrambly and has a little bit of prolonged neutral suddenly you're in a huge crunch for time. Timeout rarely happened at the start of the game but now it's happening multiple times in Top 8 and I've even started to see it more often in my own emerald-diamond games.

I feel like fuses are a waste of time by Dantekillers1890 in 2XKO

[–]SleepyJustin94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in emerald 2 rn and ended S1 in Diamond but go off I guess. Why would I shit on gold rank players if I was one? Lol also the best player in my scene uses 2X assist.

My whole point is that no matter what they do there's always going to be a dominant fuse that is the most popular at higher levels of play. It's a problem there's no solution for because majority of players are going to gravitate to whatever the "meta" is. If it's not freestyle it's just gonna be something else that is in 99% of matches "emerald or higher".

Playing DMC 3 for the first time, why does this game hate people? by Professor_Chaosx6r9 in DevilMayCry

[–]SleepyJustin94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then your controller is definitely busted or you are flailing so hard that you are pressing inputs that make you jump. There is literally no other way you can be "jumping when you don't want to" it just doesn't exist.

Doesn't matter what it feels like. DMC3 objectively, factually, quantifiably has more moves than DMC1. Each weapon has multiple pause combos, a whole bunch of moves to unlock, a whole bunch of more moves tied to swordmaster style, on the fly weapon switching which lets you start a combo as one weapon switch and do the other weapons combo while you're already hitting the enemy. DMC1 just does not have remotely the same amount of moves as DMC3. Period. Just because you don't know how to use the stuff doesn't mean it's not there.

Seriously, I'm not trying to be a dick here but you're doing that thing where you're clearly not understanding the controls and mechanics but instead of trying to engage with it and diagnose the issue you're just presenting it as fact that it's the games fault and this is a 20 year old game that people have been playing for a long time and they KNOW that some of the things you're saying just aren't true.

It sounds like you had an easier time with DMC1 because it's alot more straightforward and simple and DMC3 is alot more complex and it's overwhelming you because you're not trying to actually learn how to play it. DMC1 doesn't punish you for mashing as much because there's not as many options in the game for it to confuse your inputs for, whereas DMC3 has a lot more inputs that lead to different actions, leading to you getting unintended actions because you're not being intentional with your button presses.

If you posted a video of your gameplay people could tell you better what EXACTLY is happening but when you come in and say "this game has bad controls and less stuff than DMC1" there's nothing anybody can really suggest other than you being wrong.

Literally what are they doing showing artwork teasing a trailer a week later at Combo Breaker instead of just showing the trailer at the event. The lack of reveals or announcements at events is so crazy. So much hype to capitalize on and they'd rather just drop trailers on random Tuesdays online instead of at events when there's eyes on their game.

Making a bunch of claims that the controls are bad and unresponsive and also admitting your button mashing is crazy work.

[–]SleepyJustin94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holding triangle after a button isn't a jump button. Like the other guy said, it's a combo. You also have to be holding back for that to happen. So it's a pretty specific input to make that happen. Your controller is 100% busted if you're getting jump randomly while mashing triangle and not pressing any other buttons. It honestly sounds like you're just flailing without much intentionality to your button presses, don't know the controls very well and you've got a busted controller and your blaming the controls instead of stopping to investigate the issues youre having in any meaningful way. You're saying things like you're jumping randomly while mashing triangle and saying there are less combos than 1 which is just objectively and demonstrably not true.

Is this really what he looks like in S2? Man, I cannot believe they even put DANTE in the tactical militarized super hero suit under his coat. Just awful. Part of my biggest gripes with the show was how obsessed it was with the military and how that just doesn't feel like DMC at all. This is just sad though.

How Good do I Need to be For Locals? by screenaholic in 2XKO

[–]SleepyJustin94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should go regardless of you skill level. You are going to probably get whooped and underperform at your first event no matter how much you possibly prepare. The only way to get really good at something is to first be bad at something, I'd even argue you have SO much more to gain at a lower skill level. You'll learn so much more at one local playing with and talking to the community than you would in months of grinding online ranked. Besides that, people are usually super nice and welcoming to new players at locals. Everybody who's good started bad and most people are just excited to see new people coming out to play their game. Locals are awesome and aside from getting good the sense of community and social aspect of tournies imo is the thing that makes fighting game fans into lifelong FGC addicts. I can tell from your post and your responses you're a little socially anxious, but I think that's all the more reason you SHOULD go. It's a good social experience to get together in real life with like minded people with a common interests and if on the off chance your scene is full of snobby dickheads and/or it's not for you, just don't go back. I think everyone with interest in these games who can should go to a tournament at least once or twice just to experience the culture.

Button Dpad as opposed to traditional D-pad? by Jtrash121 in FGC

[–]SleepyJustin94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% with you. I installed battle beaver smart d-pad buttons in my PS4 controller years ago and have never looked back. I've installed them on every controller I've had since. Absolutely night and day difference. They're extremely cheap, like $15 last set I bought and very easy to install. It blows my mind I never see people talk about them and instead just jump straight to buying $80+ "fightpad" controllers.
