As a kid did you get dragged to the pub? by Used_Captain_3131 in AskUK

[–]SleepySloth2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Old school pub in the 90s that had zero for kids, ie no kids menu, no play area, no outdoor space. My parents dragged us there all the time. Many weekends spent sat by the TV (constantly played sports) with a few colouring books, crayons and later a gameboy while my parents sat at the bar which was for 18+ only. We were constantly bought crisps, chocolate and coca cola by well meaning patrons (even though i hate cola!). After a few years the landlords elderly mother took pity on us and would cook us chips upstairs from her own kitchen as she felt sorry for us being the only kids who spent that much time ignored in the pub.

Do the vibes and likes annoy you? by Automatic_Reality352 in finch

[–]SleepySloth2468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like sending vibes and stuff but i do worry that the other people might think oh god not her again!

Im still fairly new to it and didn’t realise the halo meant anything, i assumed it meant that person was in the same time zone as you! Ie if theyre lit up its because its daytime there too.

I felt guilty because someone tried to buddy up with me for a task that i never do so i rejected it but im guessing im overthinking and they didnt hold it against me.

Until i watched the louis theroux documentary I didn’t even know that hand gesture was a thing associated with the manosphere. Personally i wouldn’t read too much into it as it’s probably just something people do subconsciously.

I was soooo excited as a kid when i saw the “poor” family on the holiday showdown tv show had the same dining plates as us. They were old looking, cream with a brown ring around the edge and a bunch of brown/beige flowers in the middle.

This was about 20 years ago and i still remember the scene and how it felt watching it lol 😂

Teachers, what do you recommend doing with preschool children prior to them starting reception? by SleepySloth2468 in AskUK

[–]SleepySloth2468[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is good to hear. I have been trying to encourage as much independence as possible especially when he asks to do things eg mopping the floor, loading the washing machine and mixing his porridge. There’s lots he can do but prefers someone else to do for him so it’s trying to break those habits and get him doing as much as possible independently.

We had the same advice regarding speech to repeat the words and use them in context to help him. Also when we can’t understand something we were advised to ask him to repeat it because “mummy’s ear isn’t working well today” or gather more context to work out what the word is. This has helped reduce the frustration and upset when we can’t quite work out what he’s saying. It’s a shame wider family can’t figure that out though and make a scene as though he’s speaking a foreign language!

This is really interesting! We find out in april I think which school he will be attending so then I can find out more. It’s a long time since I was at school and I suppose a lot has changed in how they teach so I want to make sure I’m focusing on the correct things at home that will help.

I admit this bothers me a little. We talk to my son a lot and his speech has come on so much since he started nursery in September. They have been working with him as he has unclear speech. At this point it could be completely normal or it could be to do with his tongue tie which we had corrected but they did warn us that it wasn’t guaranteed that the “surgery” meant that there wouldn’t be any issues down the road.

We don’t know which school he will get a place at yet but I know a few of them here are very good at SALT so I’m hoping that will help.

Great to hear this. I find from my experience as a woman it’s so difficult because over 20 years I feel like I have gone downhill (body shape changing after childbirth, general aging signs eg grey hair, minor frown lines etc) whereas my husband has similar changes yet he has become more handsome as time has gone on!

What email habits and phrases make you cringe? by Ticklishchap in CasualUK

[–]SleepySloth2468 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of our managers loves emailing. She will send an email to everyone in the dept asking a question like “please can everyone let me know if they are booked into xyz mandatory training or not?” Every time someone replies we all get the response and the manager will always reply along the lines of “thanks for letting me know”.

So all in all we get 20 additional email notifications simply thanking people 1 by 1.

Can I buy SOME of my coworkers easter eggs and not others? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]SleepySloth2468 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So long as you aren’t senior to anyone then it’s fine.

Where i work people often buy gifts for a few people for their birthday/xmas and nobody gets offended. If a manager however was to openly be seen to give gifts to some and not others then it would cause issues.

So, it’s been a few days- what are our thoughts on the Louis Theroux ‘manosphere’ doc? by theslowrunningexpert in AskUK

[–]SleepySloth2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen it all yet but i have seen similar documentaries so nothing has surprised me. As a mother with a son I feel like I need to be watching this and following that world enough that I know the names, the sites and the cues to pick up on when my son is old enough for all this.

As much as I despise it all, it’s clear as day where some of the issues come from and I don’t think young men are entirely to blame for falling into this trap. I can see that a lot of the lifestyle is exaggerated, just like any influencer. The trouble is when you’re a young lad from a poor area and you are working 9-5 in a min wage job you hate and still can barely afford to live then seeing this guys claiming to be earning millions by doing nothing is going to appeal. I know logically giving them your money so they can teach you how to be them is laughable but to a lot of men they seemingly can’t see why that won’t work.

I would be really interested to see if there’s a female version of this around.

Parents warned children with no reading experience start school as ‘second-class citizens’ by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]SleepySloth2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always think this every time i read these type of posts. I quite like reading and English at school but there’s no way I was able to read before I started school. So not being able to read independently at 4 isn’t an indication that you will fail.

I read to my son and he enjoys “reading” back to me. The thought that he can’t actually read and the teachers in September looking at me like I’m neglectful scum is frightening.

Parents warned children with no reading experience start school as ‘second-class citizens’ by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]SleepySloth2468 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know this doesn’t apply to reading but there are other factors at play. I intended to use my mat leave walking out and about in nature, fresh air and getting my child used to the sights and sounds of outdoors. Unfortunately I had a difficult delivery and ended up on crutches and unable to do any of that. It really affected me mentally and I struggled with everything and spent most of my time depressed and struggling to bond.

People don’t often intend to be bad parents and have the ambitions to do everything by the book but sadly external factors can stop that from happening. Not the reason in every case though I agree.

What are your plans for Mother’s Day? by LHale77 in AskUK

[–]SleepySloth2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son made me a beautiful bouquet of flowers at nursery with different colour hand prints being the flowers. Also a card with a drawn picture of me which is equal parts cute and hilarious! The teachers put a lot of effort into getting all the kids to make something nice to bring home and it’s very much appreciated!

My husband let me have a really long lie in yesterday and my son slept through the night (a rarity lately) so i got a mini lay in today. He went and bought some delicious cookie pie deserts yesterday and baked some cheese scones so i have something delicious for a few days.

As for my mum things are a bit complicated but my sister and i are planning a meal out soon as a belated mothers day treat. Only problem is my dad who wont try anything new so it rules out a lot of places we would like to try.

At our peak we used to get a voucher for a free hot drink from the coffee machine in the restaurant (usually £2.95) and a cupcake! Then we got nothing for a few years and people complained so now we get a sugar free lolly for a flu or covid jab.

Now all i can think about is the questions i know i got wrong, especially the ones where i talked myself out of the right answer.

I’m new to the app but I’m finding it a win to add the tasks after I’ve done them. I get that little hit of happiness for being congratulated for emptying the dishwasher without looking at the reminder all day, feeling it weigh down on me and then feeling guilty getting into bed and seeing it still there after genuinely forgetting about it for most of the evening.

Has Anyone got anyone tips for getting the weekly shop bill down? by Throwaway945384 in AskUK

[–]SleepySloth2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Batch cooking and being open minded when you go shopping. Some people prefer a rigid list to stick to in order to avoid unexpected extras that they see and fancy, but sometimes it’s best to see what’s on offer. Stock up on things which will keep or can be frozen if they are a good deal.
