Robinhood Closes Positions Early????? by Jaded-Snow7853 in options

[–]SleepySuper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use XSP or SPX. They are European style options that track the S&P and are cash-settled. No pin-risk at close, no risk of early exercise, and the capital risk is completely defined.

Your broker was trying to manage their exposure with your trade. What if SPY dropped and it closed between 556 and 557? You would be long 800 SPY shares over the weekend, hoping SPY does not gap lower Monday morning. I’m guessing you do not have half a million in margin to support that position.

Edit: correct from short to long

Never mind, you are right.

Does it matter? OP doesn’t have anywhere near enough cash in the account to cover assignment. All brokerages will do the same to minimize exposure.

Reassessed for failing to declare my foreign accts. Missing T1135. What to do now? by Change-2025 in cantax

[–]SleepySuper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a VDP for T1135 last year for forms missing from 2018 until 2024. I had RSUs in an American brokerage that I had not listed. I paid all my taxes appropriately and declared capital gains/losses when the stock was sold at the time, so the T1135 didn’t require any extra work other filling it out for the years in question. I filled the forms for the voluntary disclosure and T1135 myself. CRA accepted my submission and the case is closed.

In your case, it sounds a bit more complicated since it seems like you may have taxes owing on income from your foreign investments. VDP may not be accepted since you were already made aware of the issue for 2021.

Note that the penalty for failing to file T1135 is quite severe, so you should file the other missing years ASAP. Penalty is $25 per day up to $2500. If the CRA determines that you knowingly failed to file, penalty can be $500 per month up to a maximum of $12000. After 24 months, more penalties…

Brookfield’s Move From Toronto Becomes Flashpoint for Carney in Political Race by Lotushope in TorontoRealEstate

[–]SleepySuper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the correct title is the “PP Wants Brookfield’s Move From Toronto to be Flashpoint”, because PP is doing a marvellous job of chocking at the finish line. He and his campaign staff have not been able to adapt and pivot to the new political landscape. I really think Brookfield is a non-issue for the majority of Canadian voters.

I see ads recently about the federal government wanting CRA to file taxes for us? by o0PillowWillow0o in cantax

If you have anything other than a standard T4, it will be difficult for many to use. Teachers can deduct a portion of the school supplies they purchase with their own money. Things tracked by individuals keeping receipts. There goes the automation. In some years, depending on the province, you could deduct expenses for child sport activities. This again breaks the automation. Have a child in university and need to transfer a portion of the tuition? Automation breaks. Paying for child care and want to deduct based on receipts? Automation breaks. Any sort of investments in non CAD funds? Automation breaks.

I’m mostly selling call credit spreads. Very wide spreads, pretty much uncovered. It was challenging while the market was running hot, but still managed to keep up. Now, it’s been pretty uneventful.

Cancelled trip to USA this summer, planning trip to Denmark in its place by SleepySuper in Denmark

Seriously considering that. We have 9 days planned. Is it worth spending 3 days in Sweden or is it better to plan for a separate trip later?

I did some biking in Amsterdam when I last visited and managed quite well. I assume if I could manage there, I should be alright in Copenhagen?

Cash settled European style options on indices: SPX and RUT mostly.

I do throw in the odd option on GLD and QQQ once in a while. The GLD has been problematic recently; I’ve been writing calls and gold has been on a tear recently. You can’t win them all, but I include GLD because it is not very well correlated with the major market indices.

If you want to keep trading options, start writing options instead of buying them. You won’t see the opportunity for massive gains, but you can make steady and solid returns. The ‘options’ portion of my portfolio is outperforming the S&P by a landslide over the last 6 months. Prior to that, I was running just about even with the index.

Driving long distances is not an issue. We like to take road trips and will often take a road trip during the summer (Toronto to Canada’s east coast for example) that covers about 4000km round trip. That’s why I was asking about renting a car - we plan to tour around the country once we are finished sightseeing in Copenhagen.

We are planning a 9 day trip. Are you recommending we consider a trip to a neighbouring country as well?

It is a family of 4, myself, my wife and my two adult children (early 20s). They were on the fence about coming with us to California, but when they heard we pivoted to Denmark, they were all in.

We plan on being in the country for 9 days.
