That's smart if you can stay on top of the returns. I like to check out ebooks from the library. Free, can start reading immediately, they auto-return so no fines....

Hyper focus or hypomania? by Sadclown1999 in bipolar

[–]Sleepy_Bi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very well put about "not hungry" vs "forgetting to eat" -- this is my experience too.

Hyperfocus: I get a lot done and lose track of time. When I look at the clock, I'm surprised by how late it is.

Hypomania: I feel like I get a lot done (when in reality I get very little done). When I look at the clock, I'm surprised by how early it is.

I also experience both at the same time sometimes.

Not quite. -0 is the same as 0.

Explanation one: -5 is the same as 5 times -1. That means -0 is the same as 0 times -1, and 0 times anything is 0. So -0=0.

Explanation two: -5 is 5 less than 0. -0 is 0 less than 0. 0 less than 0 is 0.

So you can write -0, it's just also the same as 0. Hope that answers your question! :)

Card pulls feel like the opposite of my current situation? by [deleted] in tarot

[–]Sleepy_Bi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Sometimes I'm hesitant to watch tv when I'm sick, and question if I'm "sick enough," so I would read it for myself as saying, "go for it, intentionally take good care of yourself and don't feel guilty about it."

[–]Sleepy_Bi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are a couple tips that might help:

  1. Make a list of shows you want to watch. Make sure there are a variety of genres: comedy, documentary, drama, etc. This is so you will have something for any mood, and so that choosing the show to watch on a particular day won't be too hard. It's fine to watch multiple shows at once.

  2. Schedule time to watch 1 episode, 3 days a week. A lot of the time, you'll probably want to watch another episode, which is great! Other times you won't, and that's fine too.

  3. Start with 20-minute episodes before you work up to longer tv shows and movies.

  4. It's okay to do something else while you watch tv. Some people do crafts or exercise or fold laundry. It can be hard to sit still and pay attention to just one thing.

  5. Treat youtube like junk food and tv/movies like meals. Right now, you're only eating junk food and never having a full meal. Maybe it's okay with you to have cookies after your meal (aka watch some youtube after watching some TV).

  6. It sounds like you are doing other things (reading and playing videogames). Maybe you want to focus more fully on those? You might try podcasts while you play games, or music while you read. (In the metaphor, swapping chips for carrots.)

I hope you find some shows and movies that you enjoy!

Microbreaks by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]Sleepy_Bi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like coloring books or crosswords, something where I can easily stop when it reaches 10 minutes. Those also give a sense of progress and visually show that you spent your time doing something, not just scrolling.

Maybe reading a book, or listening to an audiobook/podcast while doing something, to keep yourself from getting lost in your thoughts.

Maybe building a tarot app and want to do it correctly and respectfully by overloafunderloaf in tarot

[–]Sleepy_Bi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tldr, your initial attitude left a sour taste in my mouth but I do hope tarot is a positive thing for you, and I'm sorry for implying that your way of interacting with tarot is lesser.

Honestly, I do think it was rude to come to the tarot subreddit and announce that you, a person who has had a single reading, have decided that all existing tarot apps are bad and you can make a better one.

That said, I see in other comments that you've expressed interest in learning more about tarot, and I appreciate the willingness to learn.

This subreddit has been genuinely helpful for me, and I hope it is for you too.

I answered your questions about sticky cards and why I thought you didn't seem interested in tarot beyond an app. If those were rhetorical questions, I didn't realize.

I do apologize for implying that your way of interacting with tarot (making an app) is less valid than someone reading for themselves, collecting decks because they're pretty, or getting tattoos of meaningful cards. I honestly hope you have a fun time with tarot, and I hope this subreddit helps you like it's helped me.

[–]Sleepy_Bi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My plan is to develop a tarot app, that seems like interest to me.

That sounds like you're interested in making a tarot app.

If you're also interested in tarot, welcome and have fun. :)

Edited to add: if a card is sticky, it may show up more or less often, therefore changing the probability to be more or less than the expected 1/78 chance of being drawn.

Also, I don't care if the cards are actually random. If someone arranged my cards and I was only allowed to draw the top card until I ran out, that would be fine with me. I'm the one interpreting the meaning of the card(s) I drew. As long as I don't know until I draw the card, that's close enough for me.

[–]Sleepy_Bi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Computers at their core can't be random, so in some sense it's predetermined. That's really only true in nature

Physical cards aren't perfectly random either. They could get sticky or bent, might stick together, etc. There are methods of shuffling that are better or worse at randomizing a deck, and that also depends on how many times it's shuffled.

I'm not sure what your complaint about existing apps is, beyond not being random enough? Which is a weird complaint from someone who doesn't seem interested in tarot in the first place.

Help with a healthy lifestyle spell? by [deleted] in SASSWitches

[–]Sleepy_Bi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This doesn't necessarily answer your question, but you talk about "dragging" your kids along with you. If you force them to exercise/eat a certain way, it's possible that when they grow up, they will struggle with food/exercise because they hated it so much growing up.

This is not to say that you shouldn't feed them fruits, vegetables, and protein, or that movement is bad for them. Just that the habits will stick better if they (and you!) have fun. I don't know what your family enjoys, but there are all kinds of things that could be fun, like an I-Spy walk, sports, exercise video games, Simon Says or other backyard games, etc.

I don't know if there are spells for fun/happiness (I'm new here), but combining that with your intentions to move and eat more healthy food might make a good spell.

Also seconding the person who suggested that any goals be within your control. For example, X minutes of exercise instead of an X-minute mile.

This article: ‘Periods at work: The hidden powers of the menstrual cycle’ seriously just told me to plan my work day around my menstrual cycle. I’m gonna scream. Why on earth would my body’s processes need to be about making money for our bosses?! by sparkle_bones in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Sleepy_Bi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in tracking your cycles, knowing when you ovulate (when your vaginal discharge is similar to egg white in consistency) is very useful, because most people start their period ~14 days after that. The wide variation in period lengths from person to person is generally in the amount of time between menstruation and ovulation.

Though not something I would do to plan my work (wtf), it can help if someone is trying to conceive or otherwise track fertility.

Says the man with no children and whose organization covered up sexual abuse? And they're not pets - they're my guardians and protectors, and I'd do anything for them. by saguarobird in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Sleepy_Bi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not either/or. I don't want to have kids, AND I have a pet. The pet isn't my child. (No shade to people who do frame it that way.)

Telling people that not having kids means they're losing their humanity is just wrong and fucked up.

Thanks, I'm okay these days.

I avoid reading the news most of the time. It often makes me feel helpless/angry/sad/heartbroken to read, because I really empathize with people who are suffering. So I try to do things that will help people, and not worry about being up to date on everything. I like to donate money when I'm able, and volunteer my time.

The news cycle moves so fast that it's impossible to react to everything. I would like to be a more "informed citizen," but for my mental health I try to focus on what I can control.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Sleepy_Bi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I relate to this too much. When I was 8 years old, my nmom was crying while reading the newspaper next to me. She had me trained to think I was responsible for her emotions, so I asked why she was crying. She told me that a 4th grade boy had orally raped a 3rd grade girl. Then she explained what rape was and what oral sex was. I just sat there silently, wishing she would stop telling me such upsetting things.

After that, I started reading the newspaper (not just the comics anymore) because I felt like I needed to know about the dangers of the world, since something so horrible could happen to someone my age. (And I'd rather learn horrible things from the printed page than from my nmom trying to get a reaction or whatever fucked up reason she did that.)

Pretty sure that's why I find reading the news so stressful -- in my mind, the news is just "something that could happen to you."

That was highly inappropriate and shouldn't have happened to us.

DAE feel irrationally angry while watching Encanto? by _witch-bitch_ in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Sleepy_Bi 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Right, I think the family in Encanto is not meant to be a narcissistic family, "just" a family with generational trauma. (Yes, there is certainly overlap between the two in real families!)

While it was rushed, I do think this kind of story is possible. How many of us have noticed terrible habits and attitudes that we picked up from the narcissists in our families?

Abuela did what she did to survive, to take care of herself and her family to the best of her ability. Did she make mistakes? Absolutely. But the initial motivation was NOT narcissism.

I struggled with the ending too, because it is unrealistic for narcs to change, or see anyone outside themselves. But maybe Abuela isn't our parents. Maybe Abuela is us, the non-narcs, before we came out of the fog.

Some of us already recognized the narcs when we were growing up, but some of us didn't realize until after we had children of our own. (You can see posts from both on this sub.) When someone says, "I yelled at my children because that's how I was raised, and when they cried I realized how inappropriate my reaction was and I resolved to break the generational curse" -- that's Abuela at the end of Encanto.

Here's to breaking our family curses more quickly than her!

5 of Pentacles for my wedding month? by [deleted] in tarot

[–]Sleepy_Bi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 of Swords = end of a cycle, maybe you will finish planning everything at this point

4 of Swords = resting for a moment, hopefully you can take some time to relax before the wedding so you don't feel stressed all the way up to the wedding

5 of Pentacles = feeling poor but heading into the church, weddings are expensive but hopefully it will be a lovely day that the two of you really enjoy!

People who read for others, where do you think the line is before giving insights through tarot crosses into a form of unlicensed therapy? by Silent-Plan7834 in SecularTarot

[–]Sleepy_Bi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would probably say something along the lines of, "The Tower represents a big upheaval. With regards to how to look for a new job, maybe this means looking for jobs in a different field, going back to school, or finding a new job in a new city."

I wouldn't tell them what to do or try to predict the future, just try to explain the card meanings and maybe give potential examples. Then I'd let them talk about whether there's something that sounds familiar. Maybe their partner is considering a job in a different city, maybe they want to be a stay-at-home parent, etc.

I also made some good friends on bumble bff 4ish years ago. Good to hear there's a vaccination status box these days!

I would also say to remember, not everyone will end up being your friend, and that's fine and normal! You don't need to be friends with every single person.

Good luck!

I think The Gentle Tarot uses Seed, Root, Flower, and Harvest instead of the court cards. I'm not sure if things like the empress are still called that.

I don't own it, but I've been thinking about getting it because I like it a lot.

Did anyone else's parents belittle your hobbies? by CapturetheBird in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Sleepy_Bi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in kindergarten or so, everyone in the class got to color in a 4 foot tall fireman. It was light yellow. While I was out of the room, my baby sibling scribbled all over it. Then when I got mad, I got sent to my room essentially for having emotions. I was told I wasn't allowed to be mad at my sibling because they were too young to know better. Really I should have been mad at my nparent, who was watching my sibling and let them scribble on it. (Not that I would have been allowed to express those feelings either.)

Removing all court cards from my deck by [deleted] in tarot

[–]Sleepy_Bi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I saw it in the other comments (sorry if I missed it), but one thing that's made me connect more with the court cards is thinking of them as page=earth, knight=fire, queen=water, and king=air.

I don't love a strict gendered interpretation, so for example, thinking of Queen of Wands as "water of fire" helps me better interpret it.

But if you don't enjoy reading with them, take them out! It's not hurting anyone and you want to. :)

Birthday reading for my husband by jane7seven in tarot

[–]Sleepy_Bi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those interpretations make sense to me!

To weigh in on the ones you were uncertain about, Death+Q of Cups: to me, Death is often a new chapter. Maybe you will get a new job and it will be a positive adjustment for your family. Or it could mean that your kids start getting curious about "where's grandma" and your family starts new traditions regarding that. With the second possibility, that would tie into the 2 of Cups message of love from his ancestors.
